Rhythm & Blues
|blues, rhythm & blues, New Orleans : Oakland-based, Arizona Blues Hall of Fame member S.E. Willis' first CD. A collection of twelve original tunes, roots-based styles vary from New Orleans funk and rhumbas to straight blues, rockabilly, soul and zydeco. Willis is "a commanding singer and keyboardist (piano, organ, and accordion) who delivers classic and original material with conviction and authenticity." (Lee Hildebrand, East Bay Express.) The record's title, "Airn Beats Nairn," means any's better than none, but this collection does more than that, featuring solid backing by both a crack Arizona band (Bob Blazi, drums; John Rapp, guitar; and brother John Willis on bass) and a California line-up (Vince Littleton, drums; Takezo Takeda, guitar; Jerome Hammond, bass).
