blues, funk, New Orleans, rhythm & blues, swing, rockabilly: Big Sale! This 3rd RJ album brings the band's diverse American roots into a solid blues focus with the addition of Johnnie Johnson on seven cuts, who writes three of them, including the sublime mood of "Johnnie's Idea" and the classic stroll of "Slow Drag" It also features a cameo by east coast R & B diva, Rahni Raines, and at times, the full three-man New Orleans-style horn section that the band features at their Mardi Gras Mambofest performances: Rob Sudduth (tenor sax - Huey Lewis, Amos Garrett), Ed Early (trombone - Albert King), and Michael Peloquin (bari sax). With six other originals mostly by lead vocalist/bassist Tim Eschliman (Commander Cody, Etta James), an Irma Thomas classic, a New Orleans brass band romp and a Pinetop Smith Boogie Woogie, a full palette of top shelf rhythm & blues is delivered on this recording - topped off by drummer Jimmy Sanchez's crazed full- bore second line deviation, "Mighty Fine Day." blues, rhythm & blues, New Orleans, country, americana: S. E. Willis's fourth CD is a moving musical tribute to two founding fathers of American music, Robert Johnson and Hank Williams. Thirty years in the making, Taproot goes to the heart of Country and Blues roots, delivering truly original and inspired interpretations of classics. From the rocking boogie of Johnson's "Preachin' Blues" and "Last Fair Deal" to the heartbreaking intimacy of Williams' "Mansion On the Hill," Willis, a veteran bluesman with incredible vocal range and stylistic maturity, makes an important and memorable contribution to Robert Johnson's and Hank Williams' songbooks. "...one of the most sought-after blues pianists; he covers different styles with aplomb, comps like a master, and bangs out a mean solo." ---Blues Review #84. NEW BLUE CLASSICS![]() |
2007 | |
blues, rhythm & blues: Begins a new chapter for Larry as he continues to create music in a voice that has become uniquely his own but at the same time draws directly from the immensely rich American Music Tradition that songwriters and musicians the world over invariably turn to for inspiration. He has had the opportunity to work with Bo Diddley, Eddie Money, Steve Cropper, Big Joe Turner, Mary Wells and Sir Mac Rice (the man that penned "Mustang Sally" and "Respect Yourself"). "A rootsy affair that touches on blues, Tex-Mex, and jazz, former Dynatones' guitarist Dunn delivers wonderfully tailored tunes that manage to highlight his ultra-hip, yet ultra-musical guitar playing. His bluesy, organic phrasing deftly mixes in slick modal flavorings (from Santana to Robben Ford), and his ability to outline a tangy, twisting chord progression- on the album's title track for instance- without going into chromatic la-la land is a real treat, as are his velvety octave licks. Dunn leans on spanky, mildly overdriven single-coil tones for the most part, but the album's last three cuts feature Dunn's formidable acoustic chops. Good tunes and killer playing. What's not to like." -Darrin Fox, Guitar Player Magazine, 4/08

oldies, pop, soul, rock, rhythm & blues: Sandi and the Accents was the premier rock 'n' roll band of the mid-sixties in San Diego. Their first single, Better Watch Out Boy, climbed to the top ten in San Diego and top 20 in LA in 1964, and was followed by three top 20 singles in the region. They appeared on television shows like those of Lloyd Thaxton and Regis Philbin, and routinely sold out the largest venues in Southern California. They opened for The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, Herman's Hermits, The Righteous Brothers, and The Coasters, and according to a regional radio station poll were more popular than any band except The Beatles. This CD is a compilation of their hits together with live recordings of their fans' favorites. Members include Tony Johnson, Sandi Rouse & Gabe Lapano. Included in this CD are the Accents' four original singles and fourteen tracks recorded live at the San Diego Community Concourse and other venues in 1965 and 1966. You may have been there! The sound quality is not up to today's standards but the performances are everything you remember and more.

blues, rhythm & blues, New Orleans, americana: A musical slice of Americana that takes a listener from the hills of West Virginia to the bayous of Louisiana, the banks of the Ohio to the Mississippi Delta. S. E. Willis' third and finest release ranges from the title track's neo-Rockabilly to Jimmie Rodgers style blue country (When and If), swing (Chasin' a Train), swamp-pop (That's My Dream), blues (I'm Tired) and funky zydeco (Muddy Water, Think Twice, I'm Coming Home), with plenty of side trips between. Harmonica ace Norton Buffalo adds his talents to the unique "Poison Love." Mandolin hero Tom Rozum (Laurie Lewis and Grant Street) provides a bluegrass edge, and Johnny "V" Vernazza plays perhaps the best guitar of his career. "If Bill Monroe and Howlin' Wolf had ever played together it wouldn't sound like this, but that's got the idea, that's the aim." -S. E. Willis

blues, rhythm & blues, americana: Caroline Dahl's second CD released on Globe Records is an all-instrumental piano-based recording of American roots-style music. It is largely boogie-woogie, but also includes elements of blues, country and swing as well. Twelve of the fourteen songs are original. The remaining two are Dahl-arranged medleys. The instrumentation is a variety of solo piano, piano/drum duets, piano/bass/drum trios, and quartets, with the addition of tenor sax or violin. Filling these positions are Kent Bryson and Bowen Brown on drums, Tim Wagar on bass, Rob Sudduth (Huey Lewis, Rhythmtown-Jive) on tenor sax, and Tom Rigney on violin- all veterans of the San Francisco Bay Area music community. Caroline is also featured on Rhythmtown-Jive albums.

acapella, rock, soul, rhythm & blues: The Edlos do the 60s - Far Out! Take a far out ride through the 60s and early 70s with the Edlos. There are some very clever adaptations of songs we have never heard arranged a cappella before such as Jethro Tull's "Aqualung", Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit", Led Zeplin's "Stairway to Heaven" (all 6 minutes of it) and - would you believe - "Tequila", trumpets and all? There are also a couple of a cappella standards done with a twist such as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (they call it "Wimoweh"). "Hurdy Gurdy Man" is sung employing a vocal technique explored in the Baroque period called "hocket" according to the liner notes. It's a very interesting choice because it almost sounds like an exaggerated version of Donovan's own style. There are not a lot of slick production techniques or effects used on this CD, but there are very creative a cappella arrangements of some pop classics.

Producers include: Keri, Babyface, David Foster, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Keith Crouch. Engineers: Paul Boutin, Keri, Harvey Mason, Jr. "He Wasn't Man Enough" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. The song was also nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. THE HEAT was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. While THE HEAT has no shortage of attention-grabbing hooks, R&B songbird Toni Braxton doesn't go for any of the grand gestures that her stardom would allow. Instead, she plays it agreeably cool, downplaying the vocal pyrotechnics that are the downfall of so many lesser R&B singers. Even Dr. Dre's guest appearance on "Just Be a Man About It" nods to the sensual recitatives and bedside manners of '70s love men like Barry White. The rapid-fire lyrics on "Maybe" are definitely informed by hip-hop vocal rhythms, but the track nevertheless retains a distinctly low-key feel. Meanwhile, the appropriately titled "Spanish Guitar" marks an interruption of the other songs' predominantly electronic textures while remaining consistent with the sensuous, romantic mood. Ultimately, The Heat is an album intended for the fireside rather than the dance floor, and as such, it finds Braxton acquitting herself admirably
