DOUBLEDAY BOOKS |
2005 | |
Fiction: Used, Excellent- minus condition with VG+ Jacket. The first of a trilogy, this (perhaps justifiably) paranoia-fueled near-future fantasy/thriller, derived from the latest political and technological trends, serves as the debut of an author who lives "off the grid" and will speak to the public only through e-mail or a voice scrambler and satellite phone. The story opens by introducing Maya, a Harlequin: a warrior trained from childhood to protect the enlightened beings known as Travelers from the Tabula. The Tabula are the secret masters of the Vast Machine, the intricate web of surveillance and bureaucracy that controls the world population. The psychic abilities of and the social movements instigated by Travelers tend to disrupt that absolute, rigid control. Today, the Travelers and their guardians verge on extinction. Maia herself has rejected her heritage for the past three years, living a regular life and attempting to block out the memories of her last, disastrous Harlequin assignment. But now Maia's wheelchair-bound father, Thorn, has forced his daughter back into the fold, directing her to protect two newly emerged Travelers under threat from the massive, menacing resources of the Tabula. | |||||
