2007 | |
blues, rhythm & blues: Begins a new chapter for Larry as he continues to create music in a voice that has become uniquely his own but at the same time draws directly from the immensely rich American Music Tradition that songwriters and musicians the world over invariably turn to for inspiration. He has had the opportunity to work with Bo Diddley, Eddie Money, Steve Cropper, Big Joe Turner, Mary Wells and Sir Mac Rice (the man that penned "Mustang Sally" and "Respect Yourself"). "A rootsy affair that touches on blues, Tex-Mex, and jazz, former Dynatones' guitarist Dunn delivers wonderfully tailored tunes that manage to highlight his ultra-hip, yet ultra-musical guitar playing. His bluesy, organic phrasing deftly mixes in slick modal flavorings (from Santana to Robben Ford), and his ability to outline a tangy, twisting chord progression- on the album's title track for instance- without going into chromatic la-la land is a real treat, as are his velvety octave licks. Dunn leans on spanky, mildly overdriven single-coil tones for the most part, but the album's last three cuts feature Dunn's formidable acoustic chops. Good tunes and killer playing. What's not to like." -Darrin Fox, Guitar Player Magazine, 4/08

blues, rhythm & blues: When you go into the studio with a dozen new songs you never know how it's going to turn out. But if you've got the right musicians on the date you can be sure to get the most out of the material you're tracking and that was the case with this CD ... the fellas came to play ... skilled musicians who handled the various styles on this disc with ease. I was also blessed in having a great engineer commit the music to tape, do all the mixing and advise me throughout. In fact, without exception everyone involved in each stage of this project did a wonderful job ... that's what happens when you work with pros. My thanks to all of you. Vocals & Guitar - Larry Dunn, Drums & Percussion - Jim Sanchez, Bass - Steve Evans, Piano - John R. Burr: Piano - Scott Lawrence (cuts 5, 6, 7), B-3 Organ - Tony Stead, Tenor & Alto Saxes - Jeff Ervin, Baritone Sax - Danny Bittker, Trumpet -Jeff Lewis, Synth Guitar - Garth Webber (cut 8). Produced and Arranged by Larry Dunn. Horn Arrangements - Jeff Ervin.

blues: Anthony Paule's second release on Blue Dot Records. This is a thoughtful collection of ten songs, 8 originals, all tastefully written, arranged, and performed. Rather than use an electric bass for this recording, Paule implemented the distinct bass of a Hammond B-3 organ. In a market glutted with hybrid blues artists, Anthony Paule's dependable style and his latest release Hiding In Plain Sight are a welcome change...and that's a good thing.

blues, rhythm & blues: "The four musicians who comprise Home Cookin' - vocalist, Brenda Boykin; guitarist, Anthony Paule; bassist, Tim Wagar; and drummer, Tyler Eng - treat songs and styles as if they are items on some mammoth all-you-can-eat buffet, mixing them in their minds and serving them to their audience in a deep salad bowl of musical Americana that is uniquely their own. The results are seldom short of delicious. 'Afrobilly Soul Stew' is the second release from this popular Bay Area group." -Lee Hildebrand - Oakland, California - March 2000.

swing, jazz, blues, rhythm & blues: Long before the current swing revival, saxophonist John Firmin was shaping his Johnny Nocturne Band into the classiest, hardest-swinging outfit on the West Coast, "the creme de la creme of contemporary jump / swing bands," according to San Francisco Examiner critic Philip Elwood. Million Dollar Secret is the first Nocturne album to feature the vocals of Kim Nalley, who Elwood calls "the best band singer, any style, I've heard in years." Still in her mid-20s, Nalley evokes the spirit of such singers as Dinah Washington and Helen Humes. Here is timeless music that excites dancers and listeners alike: the hottest little-big-band jazz you're likely to hear. John Firmin, tenor sax, clarinet (11) and leader / Kim Nalley, vocals / Marty Wehner, trombone / Bill Ortiz, trumpet (all except 5) / Pete Sembler, trumpet (5) / Rob Sudduth, baritone sax / Henry Salvia, piano / Anthony Paule, guitar / Alex Baum, bass / Kent Bryson, drums / Tommy Kesecker, vibes (4, 5) and percussion (9).
