COUNTRY & WESTERN: Merle Travis (1917-1983) was the fountainhead of a blues/jazz tinged country guitar fingerstyle since dubbed "Travis picking." Its impact has permeated not only country but folk and "roots rock" guitar idioms. Travis's seminal role in American guitar styles overshadows the fact that he was also a formidable talent as a songwriter and performer. The many facets of his career are all present in these two videos spanning his west coast post-war prime to his last days as a rediscovered legend. This DVD captures thirty-five years of rare film and television performances. NTSC all region, 60 minutes. "Merle Travis could write you a hit song and sing it; he could draw you a cartoon; he could play you a great guitar solo; or he could fix your watch. . . . I'd probably be looking at the rear end of a mule if it weren't for Merle Travis. . . . If you can say there is a certain style to my way of playing, then you have to recognize it as the influence of the guitar pickin' of Merle Travis." - Chet Atkins

COUNTRY & WESTERN: Few names are as synonymous with the guitar as that of Chet Atkins. He set the standard by which generations of country fingerstyle guitarists have benn measured. But his influence transcends regions and genres. The sound of 20th century guitar would not be the same without the impact of this gentle genius who was at the height of his influence and creative powers when the performances presented in this video were captured. The much travelled "Mr. Guitar" is seen playing in this video collection everywhere from Nashville to Norway. His signature Gretsch Tennesseean guitar, on which Chet made exquisitely effective use of its Bigsby vibrato bar, is heard in all its sweet, reverb-laden glory on many of these clips. But Chet, whose versitility embraces all styles of guitar, is also seen playing a classical model and a Martin dreadnaught. No matter what he plays, the sound produced becomes a distinct auditory fingerprint of the man known in Nashville as C.G.P. (Certified Guitar Player). The relaxed mastery evident in this video explains why Chet was honored in 1993 with a Lifetime Achievement Award Grammy: "For his peerless fingerstyle guitar technique, his extensive creative legacy documented on more than one hundred albums, and his influential work on both sides of the recording console as a primary architect of the Nashville sound." NTSC all region, 58 minutes.

COUNTRY & WESTERN: This second Merle Travis dvd collection presents more rare footage from 1946 to 1981. The year of Travis's first hits on the fledgling Capitol label, 1946, is represented by a half-dozen "Soundies" in which a 29 year old Travis fronts both an "all-girl band" and one of hot session players. The 1950s saw Tennessee Ernie Ford's recording of Travis's Sixteen Tons become an international pop hit, and its creator performs it here on a 1957 clip from the Tex Ritter hosted Ranch Party. The renewed interest in his music in the 70s is evident in six performances from that decade, while an informal duet with his son Thom Bresh, videotaped toward the end of Travis's life, provides a moving coda to this varied collection of brilliant country guitar playing. NTSC all region, 60 minutes.

COUNTRY & WESTERN: Featuring: Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Wyatt Rice, Jimmy Gaudreau, Rickie & Ronnie Simpkins. Tony Rice has practiced his flatpicking art to great acclaim in both traditional bluegrass and innovative acoustic circles. He is perhaps the greatest innovator of acoustic flatpicked guitar since Clarence White. The bluegrass sound is practically mother's milk to Tony. His father was a "serious amateur on mandolin and guitar" and Tony cannot even recall a time when he didn't know how to play. The first records he remembers hearing were by Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and the Louvin Brothers. More influential however, were his contacts with two players he calls his "musical mentors" -- Doc Watson and the late Clarence White. This DVD presents Tony in three different settings recorded at the 1992 Merle Watson Festival playing a wide variety of music all stamped with his personal approach and sound. Tony recently remarked in a Country Guitar interview, "Others have said about me from time to time that I have a unique tone and balance on the instrument. I just kind of play it the way I hear it." And play it he does on this exciting one hour DVD collection. NTSC all region, 62 minutes.

COUNTRY & WESTERN: Featuring Steve Rector, Paul Moseley, Pat Kirtley, Tommy Owens, Maurice Jones, Bob Saxton, Moon Mullins & Larry Stone. Muhlenberg County, Kentucky is one of the great wellsprings of American music. Near the beginning of this century, a handful of local guitarists such as Kennedy Jones, Arnold Schultz and Amos Johnson began playing the guitar in a picking style that utilized the right hand thumb to play a heavy four-beat rhythm on the bass strings while the first finger played melody. Mose Rager and Ike Everly, father of Don and Phil Everly, further developed the style - eventually known as "thumbpicking" - into a highly polished method of playing everything from folk songs to blues to Tin Pan Alley tunes. Rager and Everly were mentors to dozens of guitarists in and around Drakesboro, Kentucky, including a young Merle Travis, who brought his own genius to the style and popularized it throughout the world as a Capitol Records recording artist and Hollywood film star. Travis's fame and the continued influence of Mose Rager cemented thumbpicking as a well-established musical genre that continues to attract a growing number of guitarists from Kentucky and elsewhere. The performances compiled for this DVD by guitarist Pat Kirtley represent the best of today's Kentucky thumbpickers. Players such as Bob Saxton, Maurice Jones and Moon Mullins have been playing the style since Travis first became a star, while others such as Paul Moseley, Steve Rector and Kirtley are a new generation of thumbpickers putting a subtle, new spin on the music while remaining true to the original sound. Like bluegrass, country music and zydeco, thumbpicking is unique to America's cultural landscape and it is the musical pride and joy of the place where it all began - Muhlenberg County. COUNTRY & WESTERN: Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed in concert together. What a treat!! These two masters of the guitar complemented each other so well that it is hard to imagine one without the other! Chet Atkins, the subdued quiet picker who thrilled at performing the fast, frantic instrumentals written by his energetic alter ego, Jerry Reed. Their careers intertwined for most of forty years. Chet, about 12 years the senior, had perfected his style by the time a young Jerry Reed was being inspired by Chet's records. After getting a start in the music business in his native Georgia, Jerry moved to Nashville in the early 1960's and quickly found work as a session guitarist and songwriter. He attracted the attention of Chet, who by then was an established record producer for RCA, and a prolific recording artist in his own right. Chet "Mr. Guitar" Atkins recognized Jerry's unique ability to write and perform intricate fingerstyle guitar instrumentals and quickly started recording Jerry's tunes on his own albums. By 1967 Chet had signed Jerry Reed to RCA, and with Chet as producer, Jerry turned out hits like Guitar Man, The Claw and Amos Moses. Jerry's LP, "Explores Guitar Country" produced by Chet, set the stage for their collaboration on two LP's in the 1970's, "Me and Jerry" (Grammy award winner), and "Me and Chet" from which came great tunes like "Jerry's Breakdown" and their definitive version of "Cannonball Rag." Chet continued to feature Reed instrumentals on his albums, and Jerry continued to record and tour while finding time to act in such diverse films as "Smokey and the Bandit" and "The Waterboy." COUNTRY & WESTERN: This is the first-ever U.K. CD anthology of King Records' first ever signing, Grandpa Jones. He and Merle Travis made some of the best downhome country music of the 1940s - and the best of it is included here. Travis' amplified guitar is a highlight of many of the tracks. As well as the Jones/Travis 'duets,' "Steppin' Out Kind" also features many cuts which highlight Jones' clawhammer banjo style - including the first version of his massive hit 'Old Rattler.' Also included are some rare duets with Grandpa's King labelmates the Delmore Bros. and Cowboy Copas, none of which have ever been reissued in 'directly from the acetates' sound before now. COUNTRY & WESTERN: This hugely important 1940s hillbilly 'brother act' has never been previously represented on CD. Like their label mates the Delmore Brothers (already represented in Ace's "King Acetates' Series"), the Detroit-born and-based Yorks were an abiding influence on all the close harmony country acts who came up in their wake - especially the Everly Brothers, who later recorded the Yorks' 'Long Time Gone' on their "Songs Our Daddy Taught Us" album. No less than 10 of these recordings have made their worldwide debut after nearly 60 years in acetate limbo. Features a fully detailed sleeve notes by King hillbilly expert Dave Sax and a host of rare pictures and record label shots.
