FOLK/BLUEGRASS: Doc & Merle reaches deep into the relationship between Doc and Merle Watson. It gives an historical overview of their evolution as musicians and explores the special bond between them and the North Carolina mountains they call home. It presents an entertaining and enlightening look at their lives and their music. During their 21-year career, the Watsons' mastery of guitar and their unique blend of traditional, bluegrass, country and western, blues and gospel music won them an international audience and numerous awards. This documentary is a rich mixture of music, informal interviews, old photographs and rare film footage. The wide range of musical influences the Watsons' embraced is clearly shown through concert footage and less formal at-home picking sessions. Sixteen songs are presented ranging from Black Mountain Rag and Wabash Cannonball to Blue Suede Shoes and Freight Train Blues. Doc is reunited musically with Jack Williams, his partner from the early 1950s, for a rare rockabilly performance of Step It Up And Go. He also performs with Clint Howard and Fred Price playing Fire On The Mountain and Daniel Prayed and with his wife Rosa Lee for a moving rendition of Wandering Boy. This DVD is dedicated to the memory of Merle Watson who died in a tractor accident on October 23rd, 1985. NTSC all region, 85 minutes.

FOLK/BLUEGRASS: Doc Watson has known David Grisman since the latter was a teenager stunning veteran performers at New York City folk clubs in the 1960s. Aside from the pleasures of picking with an old friend, the reward of playing with Grisman is simple: "He knows music," Doc says, "That's your nutshell answer. He knows what it's about." Coming from a master musician for whom the gift of music is the only reason worth leaving the sweet comforts of family and home, that is the highest praise. In this unique concert video Doc and David with their friend Jack Lawrence present their unique blend of country, jazz, bluegrass and folk-music. NTSC all region, 70 minutes.

OLDIES: The ultimate Johnny "Guitar" Watson rarities package, containing almost everything he cut between 1959 and 1966 for independent labels big and small. This period of JGW's career is less well-documented than those which came before and after, although it includes Watson classics of the calibre of Cuttin' In, Looking Back and his stellar recut of Gangster Of Love. Around half of these tracks have never been legitimately reissued on CD before. The brilliance of this music is matched by the booklet photography, featuring shots of JGW taken at Manchester's legendary Twisted Wheel club in 1964. Produced with the co-operation of the Watson Estate, this is incredible R&B that bridges the gap between Johnny's classic R&B and his widely acclaimed 60s/70s soul and funk.

JAZZ: Adolphous "Doc" Cheatham was a legendary trumpet player who lived to be eleven days short of his ninety-second birthday, in 1997. However, in this special live performance he was still "young" at 80 yrs. The year is 1985, and here he is paired, ironically with then 70 year old tenor saxophonist George Kelly, as well as then 18 year old alto saxophonist/clarinetist Joey Cavaseno, who was by then working with Illinois Jacquet. Backed by the great, sensitive pianist Richard Wyands, Ellington alumni bassist Victor Gaskin, and swinging veteran Ronnie Cole on drums, this group burns the house down from top to bottom, leaving the listener with that happy Harlem feeling that warms the soul and makes you stomp your feet.

JAZZ: Adolphous "Doc" Cheatham was a legendary trumpet player who lived to be eleven days short of his ninety-second birthday, in 1997. Some time around 1992, at the Sweet Basil Jazz Club, Doc sat down with his young prot‚g‚, Joey "G-Clef" Cavaseno, and discussed his ideas and preferences for a larger group with arrangements, showcasing Cheatham's soft, amiable voice and melodically classic trumpet sound. For the most part, Doc Cheatham had been previously featured by his own legendary quartet, but the time had come to surround himself with some of the younger, swing revivalists associated with Doc and the New York City swing jazz scene of the times. There was mention of a possible recording date with CBS Records, perhaps through Wynton Marsalis. Joey went forth and wrote some arrangements and organized the band for Doc, also tapping trombonist Dan Barrett to do a few. The result was a nine-piece group with horns and rhythm guitar featuring an all-star cast, with names besides Cavaseno and Barrett, such as Brian Sledge, Chris Flory, Dick Katz, and Harry Allen . This recording is the one and only time this band was convened, in a rehearsal in bassist Ari Roland's parents West Village, Manhattan brownstone. No-one seems to know nor remember why this project was abandoned, but perhaps CBS wanted to go in a different direction. Either way, this project, which had enormous potential, fades away in the timeline, until now. When Cavaseno was going through his old cassette collection of recordings he found this very rare example of some of the swinging sounds this group was putting down, and well, the results speak for themselves. What is missing in terms of precision is well compensated for in musical freshness and pure swinging joy. In this raw, volatile, yet timeless musical document, we catch a glimpse of history in the "almost making" with all the breakdowns, instructions, and straight up mistakes that make Jazz a living breathing art form.

JAZZ: Based on the music of Arabia, Asia, and Eastern-Europe, "Kif" is Eastern Exotica and Western Exstatica. It ranges from rocked-out madness to plaintive meditations, and effortlessly incorporates the sounds of the East with the grooves of the West. David Fiuczynski's wild guitar palette and Rufus Cappadocia's deeply soulful, bluesy cello balance the music between high energy funky world jazz-rock and moving, emotional ballads. The CD features Fuze on fretted and fretless guitar, 12-string quartertone guitar and shortscale 11-string guitar, and Cappadocia plays electric 5-string cello. Features Gene Lake and Tobias Ralph (drums), Daniel Sadownick (percussion), Matt Darriau (Eastern European reeds) and Lian Amber (vocals).
