JAZZ: More than 30 years ago Miles Davis recorded this music in the company of such other giants as Milt Jackson, Thelonious Monk, Kenny Clarke, Percy Heath, Sonny Rollins, and Horace Silver. Today the music they made is regarded as classic. "Bags' Groove," in two versions, is a perfect illustration of the improvisatory process, and the various delights that can develop from take to take; the date with Rollins reveals his development toward major status. It is hard to believe that having heard these 1954 recordings, the critics could have called Davis's triumph at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1955 a "comeback." With Milt Jackson, Thelonious Monk, Percy Heath, Kenny Clarke, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver.

JAZZ: Reissue. One of the pivotal recordings in bringing about the widespread acceptance of Sonny Rollins as a major figure, Saxophone Colossus inspired critics to write scholarly analyses and fans to revel in the hard-swinging invention, humor, and tender-strength balladry. Up to this album, while most musicians recognized Rollins as one of the new influential forces in the jazz of the Fifties, most critics were carping at Rollins or damning him with faint praise. "St. Thomas," a traditional West Indian melody which Mal Waldron remembered as "The Carnival," was recorded by many artists after Sonny introduced it here, and it remains a jazz standard today. The contributions of Tommy Flanagan's elegant swing, Doug Watkins's steady lift, and Max Roach's most musical accompaniment and soloing (hear "Blue 7") make this a landmark album. With Tommy Flanagan, Max Roach, Doug Watkins.

JAZZ: Over his long and distinguished career, Sonny Rollins has made many dozens of albums. Among those recorded during the Fifties, Prestige's Moving Out (OJC 58) and Saxophone Colossus (OJC 291), Blue Note's A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside's The Sound of Sonny (OJC 29), and Way Out West on Contemporary qualify as all-time Rollins classics. The session for Way Out West, Rollins's first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: "I'm hot now." With Ray Brown, Shelly Manne.

JAZZ: Album notes don't always tell the whole story. Contemporary president Lester Koenig, who rightly felt that Art had yet to record with musicians who were his equal, wanted to take advantage of Miles Davis's quintet being in L.A. But Pepper hadn't been playing for several months, and his horn was in a state of disrepair. To minimize anxiety, the session was kept secret from Art until the last minute. But Pepper always rose to a challenge: he taped up his dried-out cork, arrived for the date, and proceeded to record an album widely considered the most important of his career. With Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones.

JAZZ: This was Sonny's second Contemporary album and his second West Coast session, a year and a half after the historic Way Out West. Jazz labels acquire "personalities" not only from the musical tastes of the owner/recording director but also from the roster of musicians signed to the company. The "Contemporary Sound"-every bit as distinctive as the competing "Blue Note Sound," "Prestige Sound," and "Pacific Jazz Sound"-was largely a product of the work by Hampton Hawes, Barney Kessel, and Shelly Manne, all of whom had won Down Beat awards for their respective instruments and recorded as "The Poll Winners." With Hampton Hawes, Barney Kessel, Leroy Vinnegar, Shelly Manne, Victor Feldman Sonny Morgan, and others.

JAZZ: Bill Evans's return to full activity in 1962 came almost a year after his celebrated trio recordings at the Village Vanguard. Just ten days after that classic "live" session, bassist Scott LaFaro had died in a highway accident. Evans, deeply shaken, eventually reformed his trio with the same drummer (Paul Motian) and Chuck Israels on bass. Their first visit to a studio was for a dual purpose: to make an all-ballad-tempo album, Moonbeams, and this "normal" set at the same time. It was producer Orrin Keepnews's thought that recording eight slow numbers in a row might prove unduly enervating; accordingly, the total two-album repertoire was interspersed over three days of recording and the net result was two excellent additions to the Evans catalog. With Chuck Israels, Paul Motian.

JAZZ: The Last Trane represents the final studio session for Prestige in the productive recording relationship between John Coltrane and Red Garland. Often with trumpeter Donald Byrd on board, the two made a succession of dates in 1957 and '58 in which Coltrane's genius could be heard developing. His celebrated job with Thelonious Monk had deepened his harmonic understanding and reinforced his determination to explore beyond the boundaries of standard jazz improvisation. With Donald Byrd, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Louis Hayes, Earl May, Arthur Taylor. In his remarkable blues solo on "By the Numbers," Coltrane both affirms his roots and announces a new direction. Comparison with the other slow blues, "Slowtrane," made eight months earlier, is instructive.

JAZZ: When Adderley joined the Riverside label, he was assured that his still-unformed band would be recorded promptly, whenever and wherever he felt ready. The quintet, featuring Nat Adderley and Bobby Timmons, was assembled in 1959 and the promise was kept that October at San Francisco's Jazz Workshop. The memorable result is heard here-one of the most exciting, influential, and successful "live" recordings in modern jazz history. With Nat Adderley, Bobby Timmons, Sam Jones, Louis Hayes. JAZZ: One of the first of the modern jazz guitarists to follow in the wake of Charlie Christian, Barney Kessel became a prolific recording artist for Contemporary in a series of dates which are noteworthy for their variety as well as their excellence. By using different instruments with the guitar, Kessel was able to make each recording session an entity unto itself. Here it is Bob Cooper's oboe and tenor saxophone that added the other colors to Barney's combination of harmonic sophistication and Oklahoma twang. When that inherent blues sensibility is applied to great material from the American Songbook, it is an unbeatable combination. Barney Kessel, Bob Cooper, Hampton Hawes, Claude Williamson, Monty Budwig, Red Mitchell, Shelly Manne, Chuck Thompson.
