THOSE DARN ACCORDIONS |
LAWNBALL |
CD: $10.00 (US) - NEW ($9.00 with *discount) |
GLOBE RECORDS |
2004 | |
rock, accordion, novelty, polka, pop: TDA's sixth release finds the San Francisco-based band once again powering through an electric set of original, squeezebox-fueled rock and pop songs. The new CD is (of course) infused with TDA's easygoing humor and wry take on the world with (gasp!) even a bit of heartwarming sentiment stirred into the eclectic musical melting pot. "Lawnball" also finds the band breaking out of the ''all accordions, all the time" mode with a few special guest spots: Bay Area artists lending a hand include Nik Phelps (trumpet) and Jim Rothermel (clarinet). While accordions are still undeniably the name of the game on "Lawnball," the additional instruments are a happy addition to the sonic mix; bandleader Paul Rogers couldn't resist sprinkling in some piano and acoustic guitar as well. Classic rockers Edgar Winter and Led Zeppelin get the nod this time around for TDA's twisted cover treatment, with a blistering version of Winter's "Frankenstein" and a wailing medley of Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" and "Black Dog" rounding out the record. The Zeppelin medley features new band member Susie Davis on lead vocals. She is a veteran of the rock arenas, with an impressive list of major tours to her credit, including stints with Sheila E, Mick Jagger, Daryl Hall, Pat Benatar and Melissa Etheridge. TDA also welcomes vocalist/accordionist Carri Abrahms into the fold on "Lawnball." Her credits include the San Francisco Symphony Choir as well as a tour of duty with San Francisco-based band Rosin Coven. TDA veterans Suzanne Garramone (accordion, vocals), Lewis Wallace (bass guitar) and Bill Schwartz (drums) complete the package.
THE EDLOS |
RETROPELLA |
CD: $10.00 (US) - NEW ($9.00 with *discount) |
AURIGA |
2003 | |
acapella, rock, soul, rhythm & blues: The Edlos do the 60s - Far Out! Take a far out ride through the 60s and early 70s with the Edlos. There are some very clever adaptations of songs we have never heard arranged a cappella before such as Jethro Tull's "Aqualung", Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit", Led Zeplin's "Stairway to Heaven" (all 6 minutes of it) and - would you believe - "Tequila", trumpets and all? There are also a couple of a cappella standards done with a twist such as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (they call it "Wimoweh"). "Hurdy Gurdy Man" is sung employing a vocal technique explored in the Baroque period called "hocket" according to the liner notes. It's a very interesting choice because it almost sounds like an exaggerated version of Donovan's own style. There are not a lot of slick production techniques or effects used on this CD, but there are very creative a cappella arrangements of some pop classics.
FRIENDS OF RALPH BRYAN |
WHEN YOU WERE NEAR |
CD: $13 (US) - NEW ($11.70 with *discount) |
SOLID AS A ROCK |
2003 | |
blues, rock, gospel: On May 8th 2002, local songwriter, guitarist & singer Ralph Bryan, lost his battle with brain cancer. Not only was he a brilliant musician, but an extremely devoted father as well. It is for this reason some of the best musical talent Sonoma County has to offer, once again, rose to the occasion. The result of this effort, is a compilation CD featuring performances by: Willy Jordan & Souljoy, John Allair, Danny Sorentino, Micheal Barclay Blues Band, Dr. Joel Rudinow, Earl Thomas, Stony Point, Volker Strifler & the Blue Zone, the late "Big Bill" Ganaye & the Cool Tones, Solid Air, The Real Tones w/ Steve Judkins performing 3 previously unrecorded songs, including, "So Sad to be Lonesome", Ralph Bryan's last session. With the exception of some legal fees, minor recording costs and the actual, physical manufacture of the CD package itself, the sound recording "When You Were Near", was produced entirely by donation. Studio time, engineering, editing, graphics, the tracks themselves were all offered without hesitation and unconditionally. All proceeds from the sale of "When You Were Near", will be used to create a trust to fund Elena Bryan's (Ralph's 14 yr old daughter who penned the poem "When You Were Near", the inspiration for this project) college education .This is yet another sterling example of musicians and artists coming together in the true spirit of community. The result is a surprisingly diverse cross section of styles and performances from a group of very talented artists getting together to meet a single goal.

1999 | |
country, rock, acoustic, americana, folk: Brand new release by this original roots-based Sonoma County alternative folk group. "A down-home meeting of British folk-rock duo Richard & Linda Thompson and The Flying Burrito Brothers". Traces of 10,000 Maniacs and Lucinda Williams. This San Francisco Bay Area-based Alt-folk group's new album digs deep into American Roots with a wide-open Sonoma County style on ten new original songs and two classics, Bob Dylan's "You Ain't Goin Nowhere" and Johnny Cash's "Get Rhythm." Using 12-strings, lap steels, harmonica and keyboards on top of a solid core of guitars and vocals, this release tips it's hat to Eddie Cochran ("Little Bird"), echoes the glory days of Gram Parsons ("Whistle of the Wheels") and brings back shades of The Beatles, Beau Brummels, and The Lovin Spoonful ("If You Took The Time," "In The Summertime"). The group has received critical acclaim, featured in Acoustic Guitar Magazine and Performing Songwriter Magazine. Solid Air has been performing together for over twelve years and were nominated for the "Wammies" S.F. Weekly's Alternative Music Awards. Their song "Postcard" was featured in Fast Folk Audio Magazine.
