1999 | |
| country, rock, acoustic, americana, folk: Brand new release by this original roots-based Sonoma County alternative folk group. "A down-home meeting of British folk-rock duo Richard & Linda Thompson and The Flying Burrito Brothers". Traces of 10,000 Maniacs and Lucinda Williams. This San Francisco Bay Area-based Alt-folk group's new album digs deep into American Roots with a wide-open Sonoma County style on ten new original songs and two classics, Bob Dylan's "You Ain't Goin Nowhere" and Johnny Cash's "Get Rhythm." Using 12-strings, lap steels, harmonica and keyboards on top of a solid core of guitars and vocals, this release tips it's hat to Eddie Cochran ("Little Bird"), echoes the glory days of Gram Parsons ("Whistle of the Wheels") and brings back shades of The Beatles, Beau Brummels, and The Lovin Spoonful ("If You Took The Time," "In The Summertime"). The group has received critical acclaim, featured in Acoustic Guitar Magazine and Performing Songwriter Magazine. Solid Air has been performing together for over twelve years and were nominated for the "Wammies" S.F. Weekly's Alternative Music Awards. Their song "Postcard" was featured in Fast Folk Audio Magazine. | |||||

1995 | |
| rock, rockabilly, rhythm & blues, country: New CD, M- condition (shopworn) While Commander Cody is largely thought of as an early- to- mid-'70s phenomenon, he and his loyal troops kept performing and recording their blend of Western swing, rockabilly, and boogie throughout the '80s and '90s. Some of their best latter-day recordings are on the Relix label, and this compilation draws exclusively from those albums. The band's sound remained basically unchanged over the years, and they kept playing their best-known songs well into the '90s, which allows for those chestnuts to be included here in the form of live recordings. The Commander show of his considerable boogie-woogie piano chops on "Beat Me Daddy (Eight to the Bar)" and the boys sound as fresh as ever on the group's biggest hit, the country/rockabilly car song "Hot Rod Lincoln." One of the reasons Cody and company don't sound dated even decades after their "vintage" period is that they were practitioners of an anachronistic mix of styles to begin with. That mix sounds fully captivating on this compilation. | |||||
