THE CHRISTMAS JUG BAND |
UNCORKED |
CD: $12.25 (US) - NEW ($11.03 with *discount) |
GLOBE RECORDS |
2002 | |
christmas, folk, acoustic, novelty, jug, seasonal: [Includes Free Uncorked postcard] The release of "Uncorked" marks the silver anniversary of that momentary lapse of sanity grown to ubiquitous proportions, known as The Christmas Jug Band. This milestone recording was richly engineered by the great Fred Catero (Pointer Sisters, Santana, Barbra Streisand's "People." Sly & the Family Stone) and Arjan MacNamara, who know the idiosyncrasies of capturing acoustic eccentricities better than anyone. This irreverent crewe of Commander Cody alumni & other S F Bay Area denizens deliver a dozen season-stopping classics spearheaded by the great new classic already making a buzz,"Santa Lost A Ho". There are also special guest appearances by Norton Buffalo (doing the Marx Brothers classic "I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas"), Texas blues master Angela Strehli, Bay Area favorite, Maria Muldaur (both on "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus"), and the great powerhouse soul-gospel of Mike Duke (Wet Willy, Delbert McClinton) on "Silent Night". Not being of a mind to under-staff such a masterpiece, the talent roster was topped off with Dan Hick's vocal back-up quartet, "The Fabulous Opinions". The marvelous original painting cover art was commissioned of Mark Keller who has created a marvelously tired and sleepy Santa being awoken by his elves in the 11th hour of Christmas Eve in a style remindful of the great Norman Rockwell. It all spells out a new Christmas tradition not to be missed!

swing, jazz, blues, rhythm & blues: Long before the current swing revival, saxophonist John Firmin was shaping his Johnny Nocturne Band into the classiest, hardest-swinging outfit on the West Coast, "the creme de la creme of contemporary jump / swing bands," according to San Francisco Examiner critic Philip Elwood. Million Dollar Secret is the first Nocturne album to feature the vocals of Kim Nalley, who Elwood calls "the best band singer, any style, I've heard in years." Still in her mid-20s, Nalley evokes the spirit of such singers as Dinah Washington and Helen Humes. Here is timeless music that excites dancers and listeners alike: the hottest little-big-band jazz you're likely to hear. John Firmin, tenor sax, clarinet (11) and leader / Kim Nalley, vocals / Marty Wehner, trombone / Bill Ortiz, trumpet (all except 5) / Pete Sembler, trumpet (5) / Rob Sudduth, baritone sax / Henry Salvia, piano / Anthony Paule, guitar / Alex Baum, bass / Kent Bryson, drums / Tommy Kesecker, vibes (4, 5) and percussion (9).
