blues, rockabilly: Lightning's struck at the crossroads, and from it has arisen the alliance of two modern blues masters: Billy C. Farlow and Rich Kirch. The bold, soulful lyrics and screaming harmonica of Farlow, coupled with the wailing electric guitar riffs of Kirch create a driving rhythmic force that interweaves an eclectic blend of traditional blues and Southern-fried rockabilly, celebrating Americana roots styles with foot-stomping vigor. Farlow is noted for his nine-year career as Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen's frontman and harmonica player, responsible for penning several of their hits. Kirch's credits include a 13-year career as the late John Lee Hooker's lead guitarist and band leader. The two musical veterans honed their chops in the '60s and '70s hotbeds of blues revived Chicago and Detroit, emulating such legends as Howlin' Wolf, Hound Dog Taylor, and James Cotton and collaborating with such masters as John Lee Hooker, Sippie Wallace, Big Joe Williams, Junior Wells, and Charlie Musselwhite, among other greats: from Chuck Berry to Eric Clapton. Both artists boast lengthy discographies and worldwide touring acclaim. Alligator Crawl is the duo's first collaborative effort featuring renegade Billy C. originals and Kirch's electric savvy. The duo will be touring the Bay Area and beyond this summer to promote the new album. Includes special guests Keith Crossan (Tommy Castro) and Bill Gibson (Huey Lewis & The News).

BIG BAND, SWING, TRAD JAZZ : [1926-1928] The complete recordings of Nat Shilkret's All Star Orchestra. Featuring Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Jimmy McPartland. With Miff Mole, Joe Venuti, Carl Kress, Johnny Marvin and Chauncey Morehouse. In all, the All Star Orchestra made 18 recordings, from December 1927 to November 1929. Of these, 16 were released. While jazz enthusiasts will find much that is significant in these recordings, there are two which stand out above the others. These are the recordings of 'I'm More Than Satisfied' and 'Oh, Baby!' Both were recorded on March 21, 1928. The session was Benny Goodman's first, in New York. It was also the very first time that Benny Goodman recorded with Tommy Dorsey. At first glance, the band's name might appear to be just another case of over-used hyperbole. Except among those who were most acquainted with the band's members, this might have seemed the case, even in 1928 and 1929. But looking back, today, we know that Nat Shilkret kept the band true to its name. For it was, in fact, an All Star Orchestra. (Personnel: Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Jimmy McPartland, Miff Mole, Joe Venuti, Carl Kress, Johnny Marvin, Chauncey Morehouse).

christmas, folk, acoustic, novelty, jug, seasonal: [Includes Free Uncorked postcard] The release of "Uncorked" marks the silver anniversary of that momentary lapse of sanity grown to ubiquitous proportions, known as The Christmas Jug Band. This milestone recording was richly engineered by the great Fred Catero (Pointer Sisters, Santana, Barbra Streisand's "People." Sly & the Family Stone) and Arjan MacNamara, who know the idiosyncrasies of capturing acoustic eccentricities better than anyone. This irreverent crewe of Commander Cody alumni & other S F Bay Area denizens deliver a dozen season-stopping classics spearheaded by the great new classic already making a buzz,"Santa Lost A Ho". There are also special guest appearances by Norton Buffalo (doing the Marx Brothers classic "I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas"), Texas blues master Angela Strehli, Bay Area favorite, Maria Muldaur (both on "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus"), and the great powerhouse soul-gospel of Mike Duke (Wet Willy, Delbert McClinton) on "Silent Night". Not being of a mind to under-staff such a masterpiece, the talent roster was topped off with Dan Hick's vocal back-up quartet, "The Fabulous Opinions". The marvelous original painting cover art was commissioned of Mark Keller who has created a marvelously tired and sleepy Santa being awoken by his elves in the 11th hour of Christmas Eve in a style remindful of the great Norman Rockwell. It all spells out a new Christmas tradition not to be missed!

swing, jazz, blues, rhythm & blues: Long before the current swing revival, saxophonist John Firmin was shaping his Johnny Nocturne Band into the classiest, hardest-swinging outfit on the West Coast, "the creme de la creme of contemporary jump / swing bands," according to San Francisco Examiner critic Philip Elwood. Million Dollar Secret is the first Nocturne album to feature the vocals of Kim Nalley, who Elwood calls "the best band singer, any style, I've heard in years." Still in her mid-20s, Nalley evokes the spirit of such singers as Dinah Washington and Helen Humes. Here is timeless music that excites dancers and listeners alike: the hottest little-big-band jazz you're likely to hear. John Firmin, tenor sax, clarinet (11) and leader / Kim Nalley, vocals / Marty Wehner, trombone / Bill Ortiz, trumpet (all except 5) / Pete Sembler, trumpet (5) / Rob Sudduth, baritone sax / Henry Salvia, piano / Anthony Paule, guitar / Alex Baum, bass / Kent Bryson, drums / Tommy Kesecker, vibes (4, 5) and percussion (9).
