CONVERSATIONS IN TIME |
CD: $13.00 (US) - NEW ($11.70 with *discount) |
BELLE PRODUCTIONS |
2001 | |
| blues, rhythm & blues, jazz: This double CD is their second collaboration and like their first, features a wide variety of musical styles. This time around they have included many fine Bay Area musicians into their vision. The CD, City Talk, starts with Duke Ellington's classic Mood Indigo. This is followed by a mix of jazz, blues and Latin music that culminates with Brenda's original composition, Big, Fine Momma. Brenda and Eric are joined throughout this CD by local musicians Babatundse, Charles McNeal, Ron Belcher, Raul Ramirez, John Haynes, Austin DeLong and Bobby Tynes. The style of the other CD, BACKPORCH TALES, reverts to the format of Bourbon and Cornbread featuring Brenda and Eric or Eric alone. It reflects the rural and yet eclectic influences they bring to jazz, blues and beyond. And they take on all these styles of music with joy and abandon and perfect harmony, whether they are doing the Maple Leaf Rag or Always On My Mind. This is classical American music at it's best. | |||||

RELIX RECORDS |
1995 | |
| rock, rockabilly, rhythm & blues, country: New CD, M- condition (shopworn) While Commander Cody is largely thought of as an early- to- mid-'70s phenomenon, he and his loyal troops kept performing and recording their blend of Western swing, rockabilly, and boogie throughout the '80s and '90s. Some of their best latter-day recordings are on the Relix label, and this compilation draws exclusively from those albums. The band's sound remained basically unchanged over the years, and they kept playing their best-known songs well into the '90s, which allows for those chestnuts to be included here in the form of live recordings. The Commander show of his considerable boogie-woogie piano chops on "Beat Me Daddy (Eight to the Bar)" and the boys sound as fresh as ever on the group's biggest hit, the country/rockabilly car song "Hot Rod Lincoln." One of the reasons Cody and company don't sound dated even decades after their "vintage" period is that they were practitioners of an anachronistic mix of styles to begin with. That mix sounds fully captivating on this compilation. | |||||
