| blues, funk, New Orleans, rhythm & blues, swing, rockabilly: Big Sale! This 3rd RJ album brings the band's diverse American roots into a solid blues focus with the addition of Johnnie Johnson on seven cuts, who writes three of them, including the sublime mood of "Johnnie's Idea" and the classic stroll of "Slow Drag" It also features a cameo by east coast R & B diva, Rahni Raines, and at times, the full three-man New Orleans-style horn section that the band features at their Mardi Gras Mambofest performances: Rob Sudduth (tenor sax - Huey Lewis, Amos Garrett), Ed Early (trombone - Albert King), and Michael Peloquin (bari sax). With six other originals mostly by lead vocalist/bassist Tim Eschliman (Commander Cody, Etta James), an Irma Thomas classic, a New Orleans brass band romp and a Pinetop Smith Boogie Woogie, a full pallette of top shelf rhythm & blues is delivered on this recording - topped off by drummer Jimmy Sanchez's crazed full- bore second line deviation, "Mighty Fine Day." Also appearing are Caroline Dahl, Stevie Gurr, Anthony Paule and Steve Freund. Total Running Time: 56 minutes. | |||||

2001 | |
| blues: Anthony Paule's second release on Blue Dot Records. This is a thoughtful collection of ten songs, 8 originals, all tastefully written, arranged, and performed. Rather than use an electric bass for this recording, Paule implemented the distinct bass of a Hammond B-3 organ. In a market glutted with hybrid blues artists, Anthony Paule's dependable style and his latest release Hiding In Plain Sight are a welcome change...and that's a good thing. | |||||

The results are seldom short of delicious. 'Afrobilly Soul Stew' is the second release from this popular Bay Area group." -Lee Hildebrand - Oakland, California - March 2000. | |||||

BULL'S EYE BLUES |
1999 | |
| swing, jazz, blues, rhythm & blues: Long before the current swing revival, saxophonist John Firmin was shaping his Johnny Nocturne Band into the classiest, hardest-swinging outfit on the West Coast, "the creme de la creme of contemporary jump / swing bands," according to San Francisco Examiner critic Philip Elwood. Million Dollar Secret is the first Nocturne album to feature the vocals of Kim Nalley, who Elwood calls "the best band singer, any style, I've heard in years." Still in her mid-20s, Nalley evokes the spirit of such singers as Dinah Washington and Helen Humes. Here is timeless music that excites dancers and listeners alike: the hottest little-big-band jazz you're likely to hear. John Firmin, tenor sax, clarinet (11) and leader / Kim Nalley, vocals / Marty Wehner, trombone / Bill Ortiz, trumpet (all except 5) / Pete Sembler, trumpet (5) / Rob Sudduth, baritone sax / Henry Salvia, piano / Anthony Paule, guitar / Alex Baum, bass / Kent Bryson, drums / Tommy Kesecker, vibes (4, 5) and percussion (9). | |||||
