It was written in 1883 after the composer had taken a trip to Spain. It was dedicated to the conductor Charles Lamoureux, who conducted the first public performance of this music on 4 November 1883 at the Theatre du Chateau d'Eau for the Societe des Nouveaux Concerts in Paris. CLASSICAL: In 1967, Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin composed his one-act ballet, "Carmen Suite", for his wife, ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. The music, taken from the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet and arranged for strings and percussion, is not a 19th century pastiche but rather 'a creative meeting of the minds', as Shchedrin put it, with Bizet's melodies reclothed in a variety of fresh instrumental colors (including the frequent use of percussion), set to new rhythms and often phrased with a great deal of sly wit. Initially banned by the Soviet hierarchy as 'disrespectful' to the opera for precisely these qualities, the ballet has since become Shchedrin's best-known work and has remained popular in the West. SOUL: There has been a constant demand for Mel Williams' Modern 45 'Can It Be Me' since it was first spun at the Torch all-nighters in the early 70s. Its classic 60s stomping sound has made it a Northern perennial. The flip is the original instrumental of Mary Love's 'Lay This Burden Down' that was pressed by Modern in 1974 for shady UK dealer Simon Soussain. Instrumentals are back in vogue and this is one of the very best.

INTERNATIONAL: Cuban percussionist Santamaria was one of the first to take the latin sound to the dancefloor, when his take on Herbie Hancock's 'Watermelon Man' went to #10 in the Pop and R&B charts. It's follow-up,'Yeh Yeh!' (featuring vocal interjections from La Lupe) went to #1 in the UK when Georgie Fame recorded it with the addition of lyrics written by Jon Hendricks. 'Get The Money' is a mod favourite proto-boogaloo.

This is the record that will put Zanzibar on the map, a full-blown production recorded at the magnificent Sauti za Zanzibar studio by the 16 piece Noyota Zameremeta Orchestra of Zanzibar. A musical and lyrical storm, incorporating the strong percussive elements of the African influence with the powerful strings from the Egyptian roots of the music and combining both cultures in the spontaneous, relaxed, melodic vocals.
