CLASSICAL: Friedrich Gulda is known to all. He is the musical wizard with the embroidered cap, an artist who is equally at home in jazz, the Viennese lied, or the works of the Viennese Classic. Gulda might have only performed a small number of his Austrian compatriot?s 27 piano concerto ? but with these few he certainly created a sensation. That the present recording of the Concertos Nos. 20 and 21, even after 25 years, is still regarded as ranking among the very best performances is something that can be heard after just a few bars. The minor-key first movement of No. 20 begins with a measured tempo and precise articulation, then the piano joins in with almost sober clarity and proceeds to lead a concentrated, tightly enmeshed conversation with the orchestra. The C major Concerto sparkles brightly with its thrilling, virtuoso part-writing and transparent, almost chamber-like instrumental ensemble. Details left only fleetingly touched and casual phrasing will be sought in vain in this highly analytical interpretation of Mozart?s musical intentions. The listener will do well here to forget the popular concept of a fun-loving, high-spirited Mozart and to recognize the ardent, passionate side of the composer.." Recording: September 1974 at Grosser Saal, Musikverein, Vienna, by Gnter Hermanns / Production: Rainer Brock." Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Concertos for Piano and Orchestra No. 20 in D minor (K. 466) and No. 21 in C major (K. 467) - Friedrich Gulda and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado." standard sleeve

CLASSICAL: The virtuoso concerto is often criticised by audiences chatting in the concert-hall foyer as being superficial and narcistic, but a brilliant soloist performing with a dramatic and sonorous orchestra certainly has no need for excuses. Let's be honest: we all want to enjoy the brilliance and ecstasy of such music. Putting Chopin's brilliant youthful work, with which he took Paris by the storm, alongside Liszt's symphonically structured work with its manifold improvisatory passages is rather like comparing apples and oranges. However, a compilation of the two works on one record is highly desirable, especially when the youthful and athletic Martha Argerich is at the keyboard. She lends Chopin's dominant piano part elegance, pearly lightness, and brings out his exquisite harmonies to create haunting poetry in music. Just as effortlessly she brings the sharp contrasts between lyrical airiness and extreme tension to perfection in Liszt's E flat major concerto. With shivers running down the spine, one eagerly awaits Argerich playing the forceful passages, where her complete control is particularly evident in the phenomenal chordal passages.." Recording: Feburary 1968 at Walthamstow Townhall, London by Heinz Wildhagen Production: Rainer Brock." Frdric Copin: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 / Franz Liszt: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 - Martha Argerich and the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado." standard sleeve

JAZZ: Recorded at two separate sessions on September 24 and 25, 1990, this album finds Claudio Roditi leading two separate groups. One of them, which he calls a "Brazilian Quintet," employs trombonist Jay Ashby, pianist Edward Simon, bassist Nilson Matta and drummer Dudaka Fonseca-the other, which he calls a "Jazz Quartet," includes pianist Danilo Perez, bassist David Finck and drummer Akira Tana. Both groups serve Roditi well, and both of them are hard bop-oriented. The main difference between the two, apart from personnel, is the fact that the Brazilian Quintet is more overtly Brazilian-influenced. The Brazilian Quintet is still playing hard bop, but it's hard bop that is more consistently mindful of the samba beat that Roditi was surrounded by growing up in Rio de Janeiro.
