SOUL: This month marks the launch of our new series of high quality 12-inch albums pressed on 180 gram vinyl and packaged in heavy duty sleeves. One of the finest voices in Southern Soul, George Jackson's success as a writer meant he wasn't pushed as an artist and so his vinyl output is disappointingly small. Kent Records is rectifying that with this 12-track LP. It comprises ten tracks featured on our George Jackson Fame CDs plus two previously unreleased tracks. Backed by either the classic Fame rhythm section of David Hood, Roger Hawkins, Barry Beckett and Jimmy Johnson or by the Fame Gang the tracks selected show George working through some of his most famous compositions as well as some lesser-known gems. Released with the full co-operation of Fame Records, the music is from the original source tapes, and comes housed in a sleeve that features photos from the Fame archive.

SOUL: "Leaving Your Homework Undone" brings together 24 previously unheard and unissued tracks that were recorded between 1968 and 1971. Some are demos, most feature the classic second FAME rhythm section that is generally known as 'The Swampers'; all are pretty great. Even the most ardent Jackson completist will never have heard most of these songs before. Among the more familiar tracks are George's original versions of 'A Man And A Half', 'Never In Public' and 'I'm Gonna Hold On', songs that were later cut commercially by Wilson Pickett, Candi Staton and George himself.

COUNTRY & WESTERN: Widely regarded as one of the greatest live country albums of the 1960s, "George Jones Live At Dancetown USA" was part of the Ace catalogue for decades - first on vinyl, then in expanded form on CD. Given the advances in technology since its first digital issue more than 20 years ago, Ace figured it was probably time to upgrade the package with freshly remastered audio (in mono this time, the way it was always meant her be heard, rather than the 2-track of the previous issues with George's vocals on one channel and the Jones Boys' accompaniment on the other), an expanded booklet with a new cover design, a more detailed sleeve note and a new title. "Live In Texas 1965" remains one of the most authentic examples of a working country musician plying his trade in front of a hometown crowd. As well as energetic and committed performances of some of Jones' greatest hits - frequently shouted for by the very boisterous crowd - you will hear extended solo showcases for various band musicians, singers and guests. There's even a rare attempt at a rock'n'roll classic, a type of music George was never noted for enjoying.

SOUL: George Jackson is one of the legendary names of southern soul. As a songwriter he has been responsible for scores of breathtaking songs the past 50-odd years. He has written beautiful southern soul gems for the likes of Spencer Wiggins, James Carr and Johnny Taylor but has been versatile enough to write 'One Bad Apple' for the Osmonds, "Old Time Rock and Roll" for Bob Seger and to see his "Only Way Is Up" become a UK number one for Yazz. As a performer he is revered for his beautifully versatile tenor voice. This compilation mixes both released and unreleased cuts from his time in Memphis throughout the middle part of the seventies, and is the first of its kind. 21 tracks including: Aretha Sing For Me, Macking On You, Talking About The Love I Have For You, I Don't Need You No More, If You Never See Me, All In Your Mind, Walking The City Streets.

SOUL: As talented as he was prolific - and this is the first of what could end up being as many as three compilations of George's Fame material - he wrote songs for just about every important artist to record at FAME from 1968-72. Recorded at Fame's studios in Muscle Shoals and Memphis, here are his original takes on songs that he penned for Wilson Pickett, Willie Hightower, Candi Staton, Clarence Carter, Jimmy Hughes and more. Most are as good as and frequently are better than the familiar covers and any one could have made him a star of similar stature to his peers, if he'd not chosen to put writing above singing the songs in public.

SOUL: This second volume looks at the recordings George Jackson made at Fame Studios when he was chief songwriter between 1967 and the mid 70s. The first volume was met with real enthusiasm by fans of Southern soul and this will be no different as the standard is just as high. Working alongside classic Fame house bands: Hood, Hawkins, Johnson and Beckett and the Fame Gang these recordings are real quality. Such was the depth and quality of his work that there are songs that have not been issued until now. 'I Lived Through A Losing Battle' is a song that plunders the depths of despair; there is the simply stunning 'I Bit Off More Than I Can Chew' and the uptempo 'Soul Lovin' and 'It's Not Safe To Mess On Me'. We were granted a rare interview with George Jackson while researching the CDs. He reflects on his time at Fame; the artists he worked with and why he didn't become a successful recording artist. It is the finishing touch to another important Southern soul package. 24 tracks.

SOUL: Ace/Kent's third collection of classic George Jackson recordings is every bit as good as the first two: (KEN363 and KEN380). George's superb songwriting and vocal artistry has made him a hero to all devotees of southern soul and they will not be disappointed with the contents of "Old Friend", which features another two dozen previously-unheard-and-unissued tracks from the stockpile of Fame masters. George's accompanists on these recordings include Fames's renowned second rhythm section, the Swampers, and their successors the Fame Gang. Virtually all of the tracks were recorded at Fame's studio in Muscle Shoals or at their short-lived Memphis premises.

SOUL: The voice and songwriting talents of George Jackson have graced four previous albums released by Kent. One of the finest writers to emerge from Southern Soul he created hits for Candi Staton, Wilson Pickett and the Osmonds and this collection shines the light on his earliest work, as a staff writer at Memphis label Goldwax, working alongside his friend and staff producer Dan Greer. The compilation opens with the four tracks recorded specifically as George & Greer for the label - two of which were issued at the time. The formula for most of the rest is simple: George is singing with piano accompaniment, or occasionally with a rhythm section. On a select number of tracks he is joined by Dan Greer, or Greer is the featured vocalist.

JAZZ: Album contains definitive 1953 recordings of clarinetist Lewis, who led the most authentic New Orleans jazz band. It's a New Orleans brass band that's come inside to play with a full rhythm section - relevant in spite of the vintage. It's blues, gospel, ragtime, and pop before rock. It struts and it stomps. These are the first studio recordings of the Lewis New Orleans Band that toured colleges, clubs and festivals and later settled in at Preservation Hall.

JAZZ: An amazing and unique jazz guitarist, George Van Eps' made his first recording in 1930. He was busy in the 30s playing with Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and recording with many including Red Norvo. In 1939 Van Eps switched to a seven-string guitar that he designed. After World War II Van Eps settled in the Los Angeles area busy in the film, radio and recording studios. Once In Awhile contains 21 tracks from Van Eps' 1946-49 recordings for the Jump label. Most are trio sides with Eddie Miller on tenor saxophone and Stanley Wrightsman on piano including the 1946 title track, a song he re-recorded in 1949 with bass and drums being issued for the first time on CD here.

JAZZ: In 1976 George Lewis' association with Muhal Richard Abrams and the AACM led to recordings with Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Braxton and a tour with Count Basie. Gradually his startling musicianship and the time-honored jazz virtues of a mellow tone and driving sense of rhythm, harnessed to a soaring imagination and technique became known to a growing number of listeners. Lewis came to play at A Space in Toronto his first solo concert and record this album. On "Toneburst (Piece for Three Trombones Simultaneously)", Lewis overdubbed all three trombone parts in the studio. The rest is solo. JAZZ: This CD is a thank-you note from pianist George Cables to Dexter Gordon for sharing his stories, his talents, his music, and his Dexterness with us. The music is a combination of Dexter's compositions and songs that he liked to play - songs that make Cables think of Dexter. In Dexter's band was the legendary drummer Eddie Gladden and virtuoso bassist Rufus Reid, truly a magical combination. Unfortunately, Eddie has since passed away - but happily, drummer Victor Lewis, another Dexter Gordon alumnus, was able to join bassist Reid and Cables for this project.
