SOUL: The first of three volumes that will comprehensively reissue all of the surviving OKeh, Columbia and Epic recordings of this hugely important Chicago soul man. This volume covers 1962-65. It is built around his first OKeh album "It's All Over", supplemented by 10 bonus cuts - nine of which are previously unissued. The words "Produced by Carl Davis and Curtis Mayfield, arranged by Riley Hampton" will be enough to ensure maximum sales to lovers of quality mid-'60s soul everywhere. Virtually none of this material has ever been available on CD before, anywhere in the world. The OKeh label is still a byword in quality for '60s soul fans.

SOUL: Our first volume of the late Walter Jackson's 1960s OKeh, Epic and Columbia recordings has met with unanimous acclaim amongst the soul fraternity. They will be no less pleased with the second volume in the trilogy, which is built around Walter's fabulous "Welcome Home" album and features four rare non-album OKeh 45s and - for the delight of Walter obsessives everywhere - three tracks that have never been heard publicly since being committed to tape 39 years ago. The inevitable wealth of label shots is complemented by a sleeve note that explores Walter's recordings on a session-by-session basis.

SOUL: The final instalment in Kent's trilogy of CDs featuring the complete surviving Okeh, Columbia and Epic masters finds Walter Jackson in New York in 1967-68, recording what many consider to be the best material of his entire career. Walter's repertoire ranges from his definitive readings of the Walker Brothers hit My Ship Is Coming In and the Bacharach-David perennial The Look Of Love, via the staggering suicide song The Bed to the Big City soul of No Butterflies. These, Walter's other single-only releases from the period and the whole of his original Okeh album Speak Her Name are compiled here to produce a fitting finale to a wonderful series of CDs.

BLUES: Little Walter cut eight tracks for the short-lived Parkway label, with Muddy Waters as a sideman (and ensemble vocalist). These sides convinced Chess to record the full Waters band. We fill out the album with other session by Waters-connected artists to give a picture of the Chicago blues scene just before the Chess sound took over. Hours were spent cleaning up the disk-to-tapes of the Walter sides (which had been widely bootlegged with surface noise). The studio tapes of the other tracks were clean. Marvelous and historic music now available again on LP with the original cover painting by Jeanette Walzak and liner notes by Jim O'Neal (CD still in print as DMK 648). (Previously deleted:3/1/03. Weiskopf assembled a trio of top musicians for the concert at the biannual North American Saxophone Alliance convention at the University of South Carolina that includes Renee Rosnes, Paul Gill and the late Tony Reedus for whom the CD is dedicated. Weiskopf spoke of Tony as, "The best jazz drummer I ever knew." Most of the music was penned by Weiskopf along with a couple of beautifully arranged standards. CLASSICAL: Recordings of classical repertoire in the Fifties and Sixties were made during a time of technical development, which is hardly given a thought in our day with its global digitalization and mass reproduction. To appreciate the improvement offered by stereo recording technology over even high-quality mono recordings, one can do no better than listen to the present rendition of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, which was recorded on the threshold of transition. Bruno Walter and his handpicked Columbia Symphony Orchestra present this major orchestral work with its heroic, revolutionary character as a grand symphonic undertaking. Thanks to the new studio technology, Beethoven's 'new path', and his daring experiment with musical form and content is revealed with previously unheard of depth and amplitude. Just how prudently Walter approaches the score is shown again and again in the highly detailed reconstruction and finely chiseled rendition of passages for small ensembles. Instead of depending upon brusque contrasts of the elements, Walter's conducting concentrates on exposing the wealth of differing styles and tonality in the score. This strategy of balancing out the contrasts blazed a trail for today's unremitting search for the much-heralded original sound.

CLASSICAL: At flea markets in the colorful, pre-digital era, one could occasionally find Bruno Walter's Mozart recordings amongst other 'rarities'. Thin vinyl discs of dubious origin changed hands for a small sum, the cheap bootleg recording gave up the ghost after just a few rounds on the turntable and then vanished into thin air. What remained, however, was a musical impression that - from that moment onwards - influenced what one expected when listening to Mozart's symphonies. Is it the unifying sound with which Walter so harmonically interweaves the slender serenade-like character with the great symphonic idea in the "Haffner" Symphony? Does the magic of the fast finale, which Mozart wanted to be played as swiftly as possible, lie in the brisk tempo or in its clear structure? An answer to this and other questions is given by this new release of the Symphonies No. 35 and the unique "Jupiter". The latter was a linchpin in the history of the genre; it not only terminated and consummated Mozart's creative period but also opened - as the first monumental piece - the way to the great symphonic works of the 19th century. The tightly knit finale in particular, with its sparkling mixture of strict counterpoint and gallant style, is highly captivating thanks to its spirited and motivated, yet never over hasty, rendering, which can be enjoyed time and again on this production. And that's guaranteed!

JAZZ: (2-CD set) A new side of Anthony Braxton performing a double CD of four improvised pieces with the piano player Walter Franks. As Stuart Broomer writes in his notes: "On first hearing, this is music that seems out of time: often it's rubato and its harmonic materials - - frequently scalar - - sometimes seem tightly focused on the French impressionist school of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These free dialogues allow Braxton and Franks to create extraordinarily well-developed, rhapsodic compositions..."

SPOKEN WORD/STORIES & EVENTS: Actress Harriet Walter, joined by fellow actors Peter Blythe, John Killoran and Diane Beck, read dramatic excerpts from the five of Shakespeare's great tragedies, "Macbeth," "Hamlet," "Romeo & Juliet," "King Lear" and "Antony & Cleopatra". Harriet and her colleagues were performers in the Royal Shakespeare Company's presentation of "Macbeth" at Stratford. This CD was recorded at Charlecote Park, where Shakespeare had allegedly been caught poaching deer as a boy. The recordings are interspersed with music played by the Broadside Band, who play the earliest known versions of music associated with Shakespeare's plays on instruments of the period.
