JAZZ: (DIGIPACK) Compelling Indonesian electro-acoustic jazz/fusion with a distinctive cultural bent & ECM flavor. For its first international release Indonesia-based simakDialog delivers Patahan, a live recording that suggests how Pat Metheny might sound if he were from South-East Asia. A combination of electric and acoustic instruments, the group is innovatively propelled by two percussionists rather than a conventional drummer, but the result is no less powerful. Keyboardist and composer Riza Arshad, guitarist Tohpati and bassist Adhhitya join vocalist Nyak Ina Raseuki and percussionists Endang Ramdam and Emy Tata for five lengthy, episodic and finely detailed compositions that create a unique nexus of jazz and less-traveled ethnicity.

JAZZ: This is the fifth album from Indonesian progressive jazz ensemble simakDialog. Led by keyboardist/composer Riza Arshad, the band also features guitarist Tohpati, bassist Adhitya Pratama, working alongside the twinned percussion thrust of Endang Ramdan and Erlan Suwardana who are specialists in traditional Sundanese kendang drumming. Arshad's compositional approach opens up from a jazz-rock palette, but his Fender Rhodes electric piano is clearly influenced by the crisp ring and shimmer of the Indonesian gamelan's array of gongs, metallophones and double-headed drums. The band has performed extensively in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Nepal. Tours, festival appearances and seminars on ethnic percussion/music heritage are planned for 2009 and 2010, with the support of the Indonesian government.

ROCK: The Sixth Story is the exhilarating, full-throttle follow-up to 2009's critically-acclaimed Demi Masa, from the psychedelic gamelan-jazz-fusion phenoms, simakDialog. Raising the benchmark in a genre known for its brilliant artists is no easy feat, but this album is up to the task: each composition is an exquisite master-class rendering of equal parts elegance and intrigue. This is modern progressive jazz at its most original, most far-reaching and most achieving. Referencing the discernible influence of a host of the genre's most innovative voices - from the great Miles Davis, to Return To Forever, to The Zawinul Syndicate, John Abercrombie Quartet, Tribal Tech, early Return To Forever, and even the late, great Charles Mingus -- the band continues to push the musical envelope: leaping boldly into places progressive music has never ventured, and few would be brave - or skilled-enough to even consider attempting. The guiding work of keyboardist Riza Arshad has never been bolder or more self-assured, with the maestro laying down line after line of flowing, sensitive, unpredictable-yet-wonderfully-articulate passages. Guitar phenom Tohpati is equal to the task, compelled to produce some of his most emotional and ambitious fretwork to date. Framing a profound comprehension and command of the cuts' many intricate complexities, shifts and nuances, his world-class guitar stylings have never been sweeter; his tones, textures and phrases are consistently perfect for the occasion. Propelling the steady undercurrent, bassist Adhithya Pratama and their three seasoned percussionists - Endang Ramdan, Erlan Suwardana, Cucu Kurnia) - provide a solid foundation beneath the dense, weaving foreground musings of Arshad and Tohpati. Despite their propensity for waltzing wildly into the unknown, the band is always on sure footing through even the most challenging sonic terrain. This is as good as modern progressive jazz gets -- an astounding work of the absolute highest order ... and one not be missed.

ROCK: (2-CD set) 'Live at Orion' was recorded during the simakDialog's 2013 tour culminating with the gig at Orion Studios in Baltimore. On these two discs the Indonesian band offers up their own brand of inspired and spirited music of extreme integrity which listens as much as it speaks. Composer and (Fender) Rhodes scholar, Riza Arshad, possesses one of the most capable sets of hands ever to grace a Fender Rhodes. His manipulation of this classic keyboard, whose warm and slightly rounded metallic voice has helped define modern jazz, brings out the very best it has to offer as he charts out new territories of sound. Arshad's wonderfully sophisticated compositions form the perfect armature for the musicians to flesh out the sound in a very organic way that compels the listener to deeply take it all in. 6-panel eco wallet packaging Tohpati's guitar work is the perfect dancing partner to Arshad's keys as he can lead or follow depending on the needs of each composition. His subtle atmospherics bring to mind David Torn, Terje Rypdal and Nels Cline, while his leadwork can possess both the fluidity of Holdsworth and the aggressiveness of Jeff Beck. Though there is no shortage of acrobatic axe-wielding on "Live at Orion", Tohpati's democratic interplay with Riza's -gorgeous Rhodes is the real star here creating a powerful synergy that gives voice to the whole of the music over its parts. The rhythm section of Endang Ramdan and Erlan Suwardana, each on Sudanese kendang percussion, along with Cucu Kurnia on assorted metal percussion and the understated and convincing "Bitches Brew" funk groove of bassist Rudy Zulkarnaen, creates a formidable foundation of one of the most original and innovative progressive electric jazz artists today.
