COUNTRY & WESTERN: Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed in concert together. What a treat!! These two masters of the guitar complemented each other so well that it is hard to imagine one without the other! Chet Atkins, the subdued quiet picker who thrilled at performing the fast, frantic instrumentals written by his energetic alter ego, Jerry Reed. Their careers intertwined for most of forty years. Chet, about 12 years the senior, had perfected his style by the time a young Jerry Reed was being inspired by Chet's records. After getting a start in the music business in his native Georgia, Jerry moved to Nashville in the early 1960's and quickly found work as a session guitarist and songwriter. He attracted the attention of Chet, who by then was an established record producer for RCA, and a prolific recording artist in his own right. Chet "Mr. Guitar" Atkins recognized Jerry's unique ability to write and perform intricate fingerstyle guitar instrumentals and quickly started recording Jerry's tunes on his own albums. By 1967 Chet had signed Jerry Reed to RCA, and with Chet as producer, Jerry turned out hits like Guitar Man, The Claw and Amos Moses. Jerry's LP, "Explores Guitar Country" produced by Chet, set the stage for their collaboration on two LP's in the 1970's, "Me and Jerry" (Grammy award winner), and "Me and Chet" from which came great tunes like "Jerry's Breakdown" and their definitive version of "Cannonball Rag." Chet continued to feature Reed instrumentals on his albums, and Jerry continued to record and tour while finding time to act in such diverse films as "Smokey and the Bandit" and "The Waterboy." NTSC all region, 79 minutes.

SOUL: Jerry Naylor was the Crickets' lead singer in the first half of the 60s. By 1965 he was a solo act, recording with Mike Curb in Los Angeles. They produced this evocative, blue-eyed soul sound which was picked up by Northern Soul DJs in the late 70s and became hugely popular - especially with the dancers. It gained further fans when included on the Kent LP "Right Back Where We Started From" and will be welcomed as a Kent 7". The flip is another Mike Curb production, only discovered in the last decade and a top tune for the rare soul brigade.

OLDIES: Here are two dozen slabs of torrid twang by one of the busiest studio musicians of the 1960s and beyond. Think of any record at all that was made in L.A. in the 1960s and there's a fair chance that Jerry Cole played on it (including the "Pet Sounds" album). When he wasn't in the studio cutting other people's records, or touring as part of the hit instrumental group the Champs, he was busy knocking out groovy instrumental albums, under a plethora of aliases, for Modern's budget Crown label. This CD offers a sampling from almost a dozen albums that Cole cut pseudonymously for Crown, and shows that there was no style of music that the man could not comfortably embrace - from the Ventures to Booker T & the MGs, he and his session cronies could do the lot.

OLDIES: A first-ever UK CD compilation from one of the great unsung heroes of the 1960s. The "triple threat" talent of Texan singer-songwriter-producer Jerry Fuller has long been overdue for the Ace treatment. "A Double Life" covers almost seven years of his career, embracing the time he spent with West Coast indie Challenge Records, and featuring a representative selection of tracks that cover the entire period that he was on the label.

ROCK: In the 1960s, the late Jerry Cole was one of America's most prolific guitarists, turning his hand to surf music, rock, country, jazz and blues and playing on sessions for Brian Wilson, Phil Spector and countless others. He would replace less proficient group members at recordings, often anonymously. Cole made several low-budget-but very technically proficient albums for the Modern label's Crown imprint. This is our second helping from these sources - following the 2006 release of "Hot Rod Twangin'". 24 tracks including: Curfew, Groovy Night, The Tower Of London, Paperback Lover, Ripple Blues, 007 Rides Again, The Screamer.

JAZZ: Many bands purporting to play New Orleans jazz today actually play styles which evolved from it in Chicago & N.Y., but Jerry & his Stompers play it in its classic form. He's assembled a group of musicians so steeped in the original music they are able to tap into the creative consciousness which produced its flowering in the mid-1920s. Here, Jerry, Earl Scheelar, Don Kidder, Jim Cumming, Henk Wagner, Ted Thomas, Gordon Wilson & guest Bob Jackson play a hymn, a waltz in 4/4 time, traditional blues, New Orleans classics & both well & little-known pop tunes.

OLDIES: Unique collection of Jerry Lee's most confident/sexually aggressive performances. "Southern Swagger" covers the entire Sun period through to his early 1970s recordings, including rare alternate takes and mixes. Jerry was barely past his teenage years when he began recording the music we present here. Each track, in its own way, reflects something about Jerry Lee's view of the universe and his place in it. As philosophies go, this one is pretty simple: raising hell and chasing women are what it's all about. For the first time, we gather a lusty collection of such performances on a single CD, both the issued tracks as well as some originally unissued alternate takes. For good measure, we throw in some unguarded studio chatter.

BIG BAND: Jerry Gray was a child prodigy he learnt and could play the violin by the age of seven. He joined the Artie Shaw Band at the age of 21, in 1936, as part of the violin section although he originally thought he was joining the band to play jazz accordion, an instrument at which he was also proficient. When Artie dropped the string section Jerry left the band but was to return as arranger and it could be said that it was Jerry's powerful arrangement of Begin The Beguine, which was a big hit for the band, changed everything for the Shaw Orchestra. In 1939 when Shaw fell ill it was Jerry who was to lead the band until Artie recovered. After the demise of the short lived Artie Shaw Orchestra, Jerry moved on to the Glenn Miller Orchestra and it is there that he perhaps achieved his most significant work. Jerry Gray's output for the Miller band was fantastic. He wrote some great originals like Caribbean Clipper, Sun Valley Jump and The Spirit Is Willing not forgetting, of course, String Of Pearls.

BIG BAND: Jerry Gray (1916-1976) formed his own jazz band at the age of 18. In November 1939 Gray joined Glenn Miller and stayed with him until the band broke up in September 1942. After Miller's disappearance in late 1944 Gray took over the role as assistant conductor of the full American Band of the AER. After the war Gray established his own Miller-style orchestra which continued through the late 40s and early 50s. The twenty eight rare studio recordings featured on this CD have been drawn from the period December 1949 up to April 1953. A gem for all lovers of "Big Band" music.

BIG BAND: Jerry Gray a native of Boston Mass., had astonishingly been involved in music for fifty four years - he was a violinist at the incredible age of seven. When he was twelve he was a concert master of the Boston Junior Symphony Orchestra and though he was to move over to big bands later he never lost his interest in classical music. Some of his compositions for The Glenn Miller Orchestra were based on the classics, - Anvil Chorus readily springs to mind. Jerry Gray is perhaps best known for his compositions and arrangements both for Artie Shaw and Glenn Miller, but he also led a terrific band of his own which can be verified by listening to the tracks on this CD.
