BLUES: Freddie King, hard-driving and perhaps driven, was only 42 when he died on December 28, 1976. The intensity of the performances in this video suggest an artist who burned at full throttle every time he played. Guitarists as diverse as Eric Clapton and Jerry Garcia have cited King as a formative influence. Most of the clips in this collection come from a unique time warp, a fleeting moment when Southern R&B collided with mid-60s "Mod" and rendered a show called The!!!!Beat. Freddie King was 31 at the time of The!!!!Beat, playing and singing in prime form. This video collection presents all of Freddie King's appearances. The DVD concludes with three tunes performed in Sweden in 1973 and shows Freddie's artistic growth. NTSC all region, 60 minutes.

BLUES: On January 20, 1973, Freddie King and a tight quartet performed at a TV studio in Dallas, Texas. "It was humming in there," recalls director Jim Rowley. "Absolutely cooking." King was 38 and enjoying what he called "the Fillmore circuit" in America as well as the adulation of throngs (including adoring rock stars) in Europe, especially England. This was the second time King had the brass ring firmly in hand, the first being during the early 1960s "dance party" era and his success with Hide Away. It all ended too soon with King's 1976 death but he left us a vibrant musical legacy which includes concert performances like this, a stunning example of a blues master coming to triumphant terms with 1970s African-American grooves and "playing funky." NTSC all region, 58 minutes.

SOUL: To complement our collection of respected songwriter/arranger/producer Bob Holmes' work this month, Kent also brings to catalogue a long-overdue anthology by Holmes' fellow Nashville resident Freddie North. For more than a decade North combined his day job as Head of Promotion for the Nashboro group of labels with a career as a singer on the company's A-Bet and Mankind imprints. Most of his earlier Mankind releases, including the hit single 'She's All I Got', have long been resident in the Ace catalogue. "What Are You Doing To Me" backtracks to bring all of his 1960s recordings for A-Bet, including unissued material, to CD for the first time.

SOUL: Freddie Hughes had one of the great falsetto soul voices of the era - pleading, celebratory, and always dripping with soul. The Oakland-based artist was popular in his home region of the Bay Area but did not achieve national recognition until the sweet soul ballad 'Send My Baby Back' was an R&B smash in 1968. On the hindlegs of the hit, Wand Records commissioned an album, which has subsequently become one of the most sought-after soul long players of the era. Stuffed with classy performances such as the uptown ballad "He's No Good" and northern fave "We Gotta Keep On", the album demonstrates the versatility of Hughes remarkable talent. 24 track colleciton features 12 bonus tracks to go with the original 12.

JAZZ: Freddie Hubbard is a giant of jazz trumpet. He appeared on many important sessions of the 60s as well as making solo albums for Blue Note, Atlantic, CTI and Colombia. In 1980 he won a Grammy for his CTI album "First Light". From the mid-70s he was a crossover jazz specialist, hitting the R&B charts with his fantastic jazz fusion. The 1981 Fantasy album "Splash" was his final excursion into this territory. Sought after in particular for the collaboration with Jeanie Tracy, 'You're Gonna Lose Me', is a big favourite with the modern soul crowd, but the whole album is a great mix of funk, jazz and soul. Other highlights are Freddie's playing on 'Mystic Lady' and 'Jarri', and the summer-time funk of 'Sister Stine'.

BLUES: Eddie C. Campbell brings his unmistakably individual, engaging and memorable verve and variety and his command of the Chicago blues tradition to "Tear This World Up", his most fully realized chapter in a highly regarded discography which has generated covers by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Lee Atwater and a Christmas staple. BLUES: Spider Eating Preacher is the new album by Chicago blues legend Eddie C. Campbell and it's a family affair. Eddie & Barbara's musical partnership is in full blossom as Barbara plays bass on 6 songs. Barbara learned the authentic Chicago blues bass "bump" from Eddie! Spider Eating Preacher features 12 new compositions, including the title track, a song about Barbara's blindness. Their son, David, plays violin on two songs. This is the first time Eddie has played with his godson, Lurrie Bell, since the title track on Eddie's classic 1977 album King of the Jungle. This album is the follow-up to Tear This World Up (DMK 799), a finalist for Album of the Year in the 2010 Blues Music Awards.

BLUES: One of the greatest living Chicago blues guitarists, Lurrie Bell's last two CDs have been about stretching him (successfully) to showcase the breadth as well as the magnitude of his art. However for this project he just wanted to get back to the solid foundation of Chicago-styled traditional guitar blues, done with his rare blend of reverence, involvement and individuality and framed largely by his working band. Lurrie Bell, vocals, guitar: Roosevelt Purifoy, piano, organ; Melvin Smith, bass, Willie "The Touch" Hayes, drums; and on six songs Matthew Skoller, harmonica. Produced by Dick Shurman.

BLUES: Lurrie Bell returns with a new CD he's telling people is his best. It showcases all the passion, depth, rawness and uniqueness that keeps Lurrie at the top of many Real Deal Chicago Blues lists. His ace working band and frequent collaborator Matthew Skoller (on harp) provide the drive and the safety net while Lurrie walks the tightrope vocally and instrumentally. Motivated by his 2013 Blues Music Award for "Song Of The Year" for the title track from Blues In My Soul (Delmark 830), Lurrie had a hand in writing five of the thirteen tracks. "Driftin'", "One Eyed Woman", "Hold Me Tight", "Sinner's Prayer", "Do You Hear", "Born With The Blues", "Hidden Charms" and more.

BLUES: It's almost 50 years since blues harp master Carey Bell released his debut album on Delmark Records. Carey's children followed him into blues and performed with him often while growing up. Lurrie's debut recording was with Carey appearing on Heartaches And Pain (DMK 666) and he joined with pops again in 2006 to record a live album / DVD, Gettin' Up (DMK 791/DVD 1791) only one year before Carey passed away. Now Lurrie, Steve, Tyson and James Bell join forces as The Bell Dynasty to present this tribute to their dad, Carey Bell. The Bell Dynasty is joined by special guests Charlie Musselwhite and Billy Branch.
