ROCK: (2-CD set) Don't be fooled by the name - with a moniker like Wildwood, you might expect pastoral lite-rock from some self-absorbed hippies. Instead, this hard rocking quartet of the same name parlayed some of the toughest, most malevolent late 60s sounds heard on tape, and their spectacular legacy is celebrated on the deluxe 2 CD anthology Plastic People. Wildwood hailed from the tough blue-collar environs of Stockton in California's Central Valley - and they walked it like they talked it. In the late 60s Bay Area mellow milieu, WILDWOOD was the exception - dark and vaguely sinister in both look and style, they melded the f**k you attitude of the garage era with a soulful R&B streak and some enviable hard rock chops. Featuring the soulful vocals of bass player Frank Colli, the Wildwood sound is reminiscent of acts as varied as The Doors, Music Machine and Steppenwolf, but with a powerful, unique backbone that is very much their own. Joined by organist Mark Ross, guitarist John Turner, and drummer Tim Mora, Colli was a legitimate bad-ass whose expressive personality delivers Wildwood in a class of their own. In addition to the all the surviving masters by the group, we also include the legendary two-sided early 1967 single by precursor combo The Mal-Ts, and a brace of ear-opening demos and studio sessions by the band's iconoclastic lyricist, Chalker - rumored at one time to have personal knowledge of the Zodiac Killer! Independent to the end, Wildwood did their own thing, and their story is a good one, detailed in an extensive liner note by Grammy-nominated 60s expert Alec Palao. The deluxe 12 page booklet is loaded with eye-popping visuals in the inimitable Frantic Records manner.

ROCK: In the swinging 60s, the very small town of Leiston in Suffolk was home to its own beat group: the Wild Oats. In 1963 budding producer David Nicolson put an ad for new bands in the NME and the Oats were the first to reply. The following year they were in R G Jones' studios in Morden, south London, recording five rousing R&B numbers. They were issued on a custom-pressed EP on the Oak label, the catch-all imprint run by the studio. The run was only 100 discs. David went back into the studios, this time with Harry Stoneham added on piano, to cut 'I'm Coming Home' and 'So Long'. The latter song was written by Crispian St Peters, who added harmonies to it.

OLDIES: Here at last is the companion volume to "Kat On The Keys" (ACE #736), featuring the rest of Little Willie Littlefield's excellent major label repertoire from the late 1940s and early 1950s. A boogie piano prodigy, the teenage Littlefield was one of the most important signings and - as the title implies - this CD displays every facet of his talent as a singer and piano pounder. Package includes the remaining sides originally issued on 78s, plus a massive 14 previously unissued masters and/or rehearsal demos featuring just LWL and his piano. Several of these have only been discovered in the last six months.

SOUL: We are thrilled to issue 'She'll Be Leaving You' by Willie Kendrick and Sharon Scott's 'It's Better' on vinyl. The master tapes were discovered by Kent in the 90s and one-off acetates of each turned up around 2000. Taken from the "Rare Collectable & Soulful" RCA-licensed Kent CDs, these Detroit gems can now be played on the turntables they were originally recorded for by discerning DJs and collectors.

SOUL: The Cavaliers 'Ooh It Hurts Me' has been a guaranteed floor packer ever since its Kent CD debut in the 90s. The recent Pied Piper tape finds have turned up the final mix of the song with Jack Ashford's percussion track added giving it an even stronger beat than the CD release and the 45 of a rival label. This is the version you need. The flip is the terrific Willie Kendrick 'Time Changes Things' which was on our Pied Piper CD and improves on the Metros' more staid reading of the song.

It's a great mix of blues, boppers and doo wop which will please a wide range of buyers, and the original album is very rare and much sought-after by collectors. Previously Headen had been the lead singer of the Honey Bears, on Leiber & Stoller's Spark label. Ace includes 7 previously unissued performances, including three new songs. Willie Headen wrote 'I Woke Up Screaming,' made famous by Bobby Bland. Willie's stunning version is featured here.

JAZZ: Willie "The Lion" Smith in the 1920s was considered one of the big three of stride piano, along with James P. Johnson and Fats Waller. He was an influence on the young Duke Ellington. Because he remained active into the early '70s, Willie "The Lion" Smith was considered a living link to the glory days of early jazz. A major if underrated pianist, Don Ewell started leading his own trios in Baltimore in the mid-'30s; played during the New Orleans jazz revival (starting in the mid-'40s) and was with Jack Teagarden during 1957-1964. Ewell moved to New Orleans, where he worked regularly during his last years. This 1966 date, recorded live at the Golden Nugget in Toronto, features solo performances by Smith, Ewell and duets by the two.

BLUES: Willie Buck has been leading his own bands for over 40 years. He's been on the scene since his arrival in Chicago as a teenager in the midst of the heyday of Chicago blues in 1953. He put out his only album in the early 80s which became a collector's item over the years and was re-issued in 2010 as The Life I Love (Delmark 805). At that time it was decided Willie would create a new album for Delmark but it wasn't until Rockin' Johnny stepped forward that the project got off the ground. Cell Phone Man features 16 songs with a heavy dose of Muddy Waters Chicago Blues. Johnny's Band is Rick Kreher, Barrelhouse Chuck, John Sefner, Steve Bass and special guest Bharath Rajakumar.

JAZZ: In the spring of 1965 pianist Don Ewell began his four-week engagement in Toronto that lasted seven months. David Gillman, a jazz fan and one-time promoter, started hanging at the Golden Nugget and was reminded of another stride legend Willie "The Lion" Smith who he had presented in the '40s. Fast forward to '66, Gillman brings Ewell and Smith together for a Canadian TV filming. While in town the two jam together often at the Nugget and informal, live recordings are made (issued as Stride Piano Duets, DMK 249). The following year the two are brought together into a recording studio and this album is the astonishing result.

JAZZ: Born in Defiance, OH in 1906 Wild Bill Davison is one of jazz's most colorful cornet players of all time. Davison is best known for his association with Eddie Condon lasting from the mid-'40s into the 1960s. Recorded in 1968 this session was the result of a live engagement at Toronto's Colonial Tavern. The players were put together to play one gig billed as The Jazz Giants. The response was so tumultuous that return engagements were booked and arrangements were made for this recording. With Benny Morton, Herb Hall, Claude Hopkins, Arvell Shaw, Buzzy Drootin. Contains a previously unissued piano feature on "Three Little Words" and an alternate take of "Black And Blue."
