JAZZ: Bassist Paul Warburton and guitarist Dale Bruning recorded together in a duo format. Bruning was a student of Dennis Sandole who was also John Coltrane's teacher. Warburton was self taught and learned to play practicing to the solos of Red Mitchell and Ray Brown. Warburton toured with Bill Evans in the 70's. This wonderful recording has never been released on CD and there were only 900 copies pressed back in 1987. Pressed on virgin vinyl by Wakefield Manufacturing.

HOLIDAY: Considered by some to be the finest recording of Christmas carols ever, these original compositions were written by Alfred and primary lyricists Wihla Hutson and Bates G. Burt (Alfred's father). In fact, the carols were initially sent as Christmas messages to Burt family members and friends! Artists from Nat "King" Cole to the Boston Pops Orchestra and Chorus have popularized what conductor John Williams described as "mini-masterpieces." The sixteen voice a cappella choir directed by arranger Jimmy Joyce (who had worked with Alfred in the Alvino Rey Orchestra) is sprightly and sure footed in their performance, which was recorded in 1963. A sentimental and popular favorite.

HOLIDAY: These are the only carols created in modern times that have obtained international acceptance, from local choirs to stars like Andy Williams, Peggy Lee, Nat "King" Cole and Frank Sinatra have recorded Burt carols. So listen to these "mini-masterpieces," beautifully performed by the Columbia Choir with occasional light accompaniment by the Ralph Carmichael Brass Ensemble and organ. "Caroling, Caroling," "The Star Carol," "Christ in the Stranger's Guise," "Come Dear Children," "Some Children See Him," "All on a Christmas Morning," "O Hearken Ye." "Jesu Parvule," "Nigh Bethlehem," "This is Christmas," "Ah, Bleak and Chill" and "We'll Dress the House." At the end of the CD is a very nice instrumental medley of the carols.

JAZZ: Recently discovered live recording from 1965 of pianist Burton Greene performing with saxophonist Marion Brown, drummer Rashid Ali and bassist Reggie Johnson in Woodstock, New York. During the 60s there was a clear line drawn in the sand between the traditionalists of jazz and the new school of free jazz musicians, who took in the social situations around them and channeled it through their music. This quartet stood firmly on the side of free jazz with highly creative compositions mixed with a strong dose of improvisation. An important audio recording by some of the best known musicians in the field of free improvisation.

JAZZ: Burtnett is best remembered for his years as resident bandleader at the swank Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. He started as a pianist and arranger for Art Hickman and later became director for Hickman's organization. Burtnett eventually formed his own group and took over the Biltmore Orchestra. This CD features Burtnett's commercial recordings from 1927 including his last two recordings in 1934 while at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. Also included are several vocals by the Biltmore Trio, who became such a rage that many other bands started the practice of using vocal trios, including Gus Arnheim at the Coconut Grove, who hired The Rhythm Boys to compete with his local rival. While in Los Angeles, Burtnett and his band appeared in several early musical films. Unfortunately, his career was cut short at age 39 by a medical emergency that took his life.
