JAZZ: Jazz drummer Frank Rosaly's debut album as leader. Cicada Music is an extension of drummer Rosaly's original soundtrack work from the documentary Scrappers, which follows the life of two Chicago recyclers scouring the alleys for scrap metal. Rosaly's music is a meditation on that struggle, the vast complexity of the urban environment and the beauty of human perseverance. Using some of the leading voices in Chicago's free music scene, these 10 tracks feature James Falzone, clarinet; Jason Stein, bass clarinetist; Keefe Jackson, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, contra-bass clarinet: Jason Adasiewicz, vibraphone; Jason Roebke, bass; and Frank Rosaly, drums, electronics.

JAZZ: (2-LP set) In the early 70's a band named Catalyst was formed in the heart of Philadelphia. The core of the group was Odean Pope, Sherman Ferguson, Eddie Green and Al Johnson (who was replaced by Tyrone Brown after their first album). The band drew from a wide range of musical styles; jazz, funk, R & B, avant garde and fusion all found their way into the creative sonic tapestry of Catalyst. With the given talents of Catalyst they could have and should have been bigger but sadly they found themselves with little promotion or recognition outside the proximity of Philadelphia. Thankfully Catalyst were able to leave behind four extraordinary recordings that will appeal to both jazz heads and those in the hip hop community.

JAZZ: (2-CD set) On November 20 and 21, 2010, maverick record label Abstract Logix hosted a series of spectacular performances, featuring an array of artists who handily defy genre categorization in favor of unbridled expression. The first New Universe Festival was a die-hard music lover's dream, defined by artists who seamlessly mingle compositional ingenuity and improvisational grace and fervor. Among the featured musicians were pioneering guitarist John McLaughlin and his current band the 4th Dimension with special guest, tabla legend Zakir Hussain; Widespread Panic guitar hero Jimmy Herring with his electric band; Return To Forever Drummer Lenny White; the all-star quartet Human Element (keyboardist Scott Kinsey, bassist Matt Garrison, percussionist Arto Tun‡boyaciyan; fearless guitarist and improviser Wayne Krantz appearing with the amazing Anthony Jackson on bass; visionary Indian composer and drummer Ranjit Barot; and emerging guitar visionary Alex Machacek. "I feel honored to participate," says festival headliner John McLaughlin, while on tour promoting his Grammy-nominated album To the One. "My life has been dedicated to my instrument and music, and I continue to devote myself to music in order to be worthy of such a privilege. You will hear the kind of complicity that exists between us all - this is a very special element, and frankly essential for making good music." Jimmy Herring very succinctly put it, "This is real music played by real people, happening in real time. We're up there listening and reacting to one another, and people genuinely respond to the risks we take. This is human music in a mechanized age." o"It was a veritable smorgasbord of fusion, with many of the top-notch artists in the genre coming together for a series of performances. Jazz-rock fans attending the inaugural event heard legends like John McLaughlin and Lenny White, established names such as Wayne Krantz, Human Element and Jimmy Herring, as well as up-and-comers like Alex Machacek and Ranjit Barot. From start to finish, the music was electric, even when it was being played acoustically. There was also a palpable sense of community as artists generously participated in listening sessions and sat in with each other throughout the event. I highly recommend this festival and look forward to seeing and hearing its second incarnation in 2012." - Lee Mergner, JazzTimes

INTERNATIONAL: Sitarist Kalyani is one of the few major women instrumentalists in her genre, with a career spanning 50 years. She's a disciple of Vilayat Khan & has had training from others, including percussion genius Jnan Prakash Ghosh. Her immediately identifiable sitar tone is a unique variant of the Vilayatkhani sound, and her style mixes a vibrant rhythmic approach with Vilayat Khan's lyricism. Kalyani plays the morning raga "Ramkali" & a short semi-classical piece in the raga "Jogiya". She's joined by Samir Chatterjee on tabla.

INTERNATIONAL: Kalyan Mukherjea, a Professor of Mathematics, is an unusual member of the Radhu Babu stylistic lineage, which emphasizes the sarod's rhythmic/percussive aspects - an enhancer and modernizer of the traditional idiom. While influenced by the modern vocal style of sitarist Vilayat Khan, he plays a sarod with a rather banjo-like tone, which belonged to his Guru's Guru, Mohammed Amir Khan. Here he plays ragas "Shuddh Kalyan" and "Shukla Bilawal," both of which have a peaceful, calming ambience.

JAZZ: Dave Mihaly's Eastern Accents In The Far West, is a delightfully far-reaching CD. Part free-jazz record in the grand tradition of masters like the Art Ensemble Of Chicago and Ornette Coleman, the CD balances sensitive ensemble playing with melodic compositions and song structures that explore what Mihaly calls "instrumental color". His collaborators in the "Shimmering Leaves" ensemble - trumpet and horn player Ara Anderson (Tom Waits, Tin Hat Trio) and saxophonist David Boyce (Broun Fellinis) - create a range of textures from sparse folklore-inspired songs to lush and powerful group improvisations that sketch the simple and tuneful beauty of Mihaly's compositions that will stay with the listener long after the music stops playing.
