JAZZ: When this LP was released in 1962, it was honoured with the maximum number of stars that Downbeat, the most famous of all jazz magazines, could award. Is there any better proof that the composer and arranger Charlie Mingus was ahead of his time? As a double bassist he was rather less virtuosic than his fellow musicians - and not just on these recordings. However, these five numbers earned every single star of the five they were awarded. They illustrate his masterly handling of Mexican folk music and his skill in integrating it into his jazz. The small ensemble of Clarence Shaw, whom Mingus described as a super-improviser on the trumpet, Jimmy Knepper, a technical ace on the trombone, the legendary tenor saxophone player Shafi Hadi, and his longstanding friend Dannie Richmond on the drums all earn the very highest recognition, even though the sextet of 1963/64 once more enhanced their creativity in later years.

JAZZ: Who hasn't got an ancient, worn-out copy of "The Clown" on his shelf, with a tatty cover and torn inner sleeve? Or maybe one of the rare re-releases made of cheap, thin vinyl with dreadful graphic art? And if you haven't heard this gem for a long time, despite the flood of Mingus LPs, CDs and downloads on the market, then you really should seize this opportunity to do so. "The Clown" was, and still is, an absolute must-have for every jazz collector. The small ensemble, only five musicians, came into the New York Atlantic Records studio in March 1957 to record music exclusively composed by the double bassist.

JAZZ: It was a fairly ordinary quintet that entered the Audio-Video Studios in New York City on 30 January 1956: one tenor saxophone, one alto saxophone, a pianist, a drummer and ...you guessed: an extraordinary man on the double bass! Not just an instrumentalist, but also an imaginative composer, wayfarer between all kinds of jazz, arranger and enfant terrible.

JAZZ: Charles Mingus has a fascinating way of offering music that is grounded in tradition while remaining startlingly original. The freshness of a piece like Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus, has the effect of rendering much of what passes for jazz as tedious. The band is small for Mingus, and includes Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, Ted Curson on trumpet, and Dannie Richmond on drums. The album accomplishes what the best of Mingus accomplishes: the perfect tension between jazz played as an ensemble and jazz played as totally free. 180 gram vinyl.

JAZZ: Despite the scattered recording history of the five tracks that comprise this album (two separate sessions - one from 1957, the other four years later - were used), the result is pretty cohesive. It took another three years before the actual album was released in 1964. Mingus and his steady backing crew (the same musicians that supported him on the eminent "The Clown" and "Oh Yeah," respectively) chart some rarely explored stylistic territory. The later date features the more refined, and characteristic, songs of the bunch; the 1957 session races around Eurocentric rhythms for a feeling of rushed exuberance. It's hardcore jazz at its most celebratory, with master Mingus up front leading the charge.

JAZZ: This is perhaps the most cohesive set Mingus ever made, recorded during a crisis of personnel in 1960. After many months with Mingus, Eric Dolphy and Ted Curson had decided to leave. These sessions and a few to follow for Mingus and the Jazz Artists Guild were to be their last tie with Mingus. He decided to set the mood that might resemble a night in the club, hence his announcements on the recording and the reason he wanted the lights turned out during the recording. For once, in these sessions, everyone in a Mingus unit reached and maintained that level of daring to make their instruments become extensions of themselves.

JAZZ: "My policy on a Mingus date is to give him complete freedom - not that he wouldn't take it anyway." Producer Nat Hentoff's realistic attitude to working with this controversial figure is probably the chief reason why the Mingus/Candid albums have retained their artistic currency over the years. Surrounding himself with men such as Eric Dolphy, Jimmy Knepper and Dannie Richmond gave Mingus a complete palette of tone colors to work from. This album was originally released in 1960.

JAZZ: This is the last of four albums comprising all of Charles Mingus's work for the Candid label, and it contains one previously unsuspected (and, of course, unissued) alternate take of great interest. For the rest, it gathers together material that was only released for the first time in the Mosaic boxed set of Mingus recordings, alongside tracks that were issued in 1961 although included not in Mingus albums but in the compilations "The Jazz Life" (CND #79019) and "Newport Rebels" (CND #79022). The album features unique combinations of musicians -- Mingus with Roy Eldridge, Booker Little with Jo Jones, Benny Bailey with Abbey Lincoln and others. The Newport rebellion is long over, but it's crackling spirit goes on forever here.

JAZZ: The (now) famous Newport Jazz Festival was inaugurated in 1954 as a nonprofit organization by George Wein and Lorraine Lorillard in Newport, Rhode Island. It quickly became a huge success attracting bigger and bigger crowds and with the success came problems and finally in 1960 the bubble burst. In that year, not only were the crowds getting unmanageable but also there had developed a resentment towards the festival by a significant number of (mainly) black musicians who left that the organizers were discriminating against them personally and black jazz-new and old. Max Roach and Charles Mingus, both displaying great fortitude, decided to organize their own "Rebel" Festival adjacent to the Main event. Participating were the new "lions" Ornette Coleman, Mingus, Max and Abbey Lincoln alongside Kenny Dorham, Jimmy Knepper, Roy Eldridge and Jo Jones. Sadly the Rebel Festival went unrecorded but Candid producer Nat Hentoff gathered many of the participants at a Studio in New York on November 11, 1960 and this album is both a tribute to everyone involved and reminder of a most significant happening in American Jazz History.

INTERNATIONAL: The music presented in this album is in some way typical of the fusing of Brazilian and Jazz forms combining as it does four Brazilian artists with two Europeans melding some now classic Brazilian song forms with jazz influences. So we have here a diverse recital indeed, mixing established Brazilian pieces with new originals and including a standard song adapted as a bossa alongside a virtuoso performance of one of the most familiar South American melodies. "Jazz Popular Brasileiro " is a fine introduction to the vibrant music of Gustavo Marques & Pororocas and gives us a valuable insight into the scope of Brazilian music far from it's native shore with these London musicians. Featuring Anselmo Netto, Dudu Marques and Heidi Vogel.
