JAZZ: Anthony Braxton was first documented as a player in 1967 on Muhal Richard Abrams' Levels and Degrees of Light (DMK 413) Nine months of gestation produced this, his first recording as a leader. Braxton the player/composer/constructor is here at full length. In retrospect he was a much more developed and confident musician than he may have seemed at the time.

JAZZ: To paraphrase the old stock brokerage commercial: "When Anthony Braxton plays, people listen". And they have been doing so for decades, through dozens of recordings spanning an evolution that is remarkable for its independence and virtuosity. Braxton's first two albums, "Three Compositions Of New Jazz" (1968, DMK #415) and "For Alto" (1969, DMK #420) were released on Delmark, and it's only fitting that the present rare quartet version of his self-described "Ghost Trance Music" be released more than thirty years later on the same label. Features Anthony Braxton on woodwinds, Kevin Uehlinger on piano/melodica, Keith Witty on bass, and Noam Schatz on percussion.

JAZZ: "Composition N. 247" is one of the few Ghost Trance Music works tailored for a specific instrumentation: two saxophones & a bagpipe (Braxton, James Fei & Matthew Welch). It's been recorded live, and the striking quality of this recording will be evident immediately upon first hearing. Detailed notes by the insider James Fei will guide you through the piece. Of this he says "the music on this disc is unlike anything I have participated in, in terms of mental & physical endurance, mobility between different sets of material, and sheer sonic intensity."

JAZZ: This 2-CD set was recorded live at the Ljubljana Music Festival in Slovenia, June 28, 2000. "Composition No. 169" was arranged for four saxophonists (Anthony, James Fei, Chris Jonas & Jackson Moore) & strings from the Slovenia Radio Orchestra. In addition to the composition, the performance was augmented by three "Ghost Trance" structures. This work is yet another confirmation that the imagination of a true visionary knows no bounds.

JAZZ: 2-CD set continues to explore the "Ghost Trance Music" series devised by Anthony Braxton. "Composition N. 227" is performed by Chris Jonas (soprano, alto, tenor saxophones), David Novak (bassoon, contrabassoon, etc) and Braxton (alto, F-alto saxophones, clarinet, flute). "Composition N. 228" is performed by Jackson Moore (clarinet, alto & baritone saxophones), Seth Misterka (alto, baritone saxophones) and Braxton (bass, contrabass saxophones, contrabass clarinet). As Steve Day writes in his liner notes, Anthony Braxton "has gathered a new, younger generation of saxophone players around him. Together this new collective has been responsible for another set of post-Wesleyan classic recordings".

JAZZ: This 4-CD set (4.5 hours of music) was recorded during a series of concerts in 2003 by Antony Braxton's quartet featuring Kevin O'Neil on guitar, Kevin Norton on percussion, Andy Eulau on bass and Anthony Braxton on saxophone. Here they perform standards in an entirely new way, reinventing the tradition -- while a conservative performer merely echoes and diminishes the tradition, Braxton makes known the social, moral, and historical imperatives that drive this music and are embedded in the tradition. He makes it as new and vital as the original forms. Limited edition of 1000 copies. (Now available)

JAZZ: (2-CD set) A new side of Anthony Braxton performing a double CD of four improvised pieces with the piano player Walter Franks. As Stuart Broomer writes in his notes: "On first hearing, this is music that seems out of time: often it's rubato and its harmonic materials - - frequently scalar - - sometimes seem tightly focused on the French impressionist school of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These free dialogues allow Braxton and Franks to create extraordinarily well-developed, rhapsodic compositions..."

JAZZ: (2-CD set) Recorded in 1994 by the 23-piece Creative Jazz Orchestra, Anthony Braxton considers these two compositions to be his most important works. They might be called Anthony Braxton's operas, and the 20-page booklet gives full librettos of both. Although the orchestra in question is called Creative Jazz Orchestra, the music is much closer to classical/academic avant-garde than to jazz. The scope of Braxton's vision is really amazing, and this double CD is a necessary addition to the collections of Braxton's devotees.
