SOUL: Richard Stamz, a colourful Chicago DJ and TV show host, ventured into the record business in the early 60s with the Foxy and Paso labels. His main artist and right hand man was Harold Burrage whose 'Please Love Me' was the original of the Monk Higgins song which became a local R&B hit for Betty Everett three years later. Lee "Shot" Williams, 'Hello Baby' is simply lowdown dirty R&B at its best.

JAZZ: This was made by a fine small jazz group operating in the early 60s, co-led by saxophonist Harold Land and vibes player Bobby Hutcherson. They released records under Bobby's name for Blue Note and under Harold's for Cadet and Mainstream. Based on the West Coast, Harold was one of the best players of his generation. An integral member of the Max Roach & Clifford Brown group, he made his own records such as "The Fox" before joining Gerald Wilson's big band in the early 60s. He joined up with Bobby Hutcherson in 1967 and for the next five years they made a series of outstanding albums. "Choma (Burn)" was the second issued on Mainstream and is a thrilling exploration of the post-bop small group sound. Whether it is the almost free title track, or the funkier 'Black Caucus', the unusual two piano line-up is its equal. Jazz at the highest level and its first ever issue on CD.

GOSPEL: Widely appreciated for his bluesy and powerful style, blind singer/pianist/choir leader Prof. Harold Boggs, was admired for his ability to write songs with infectious lyrics like,"When It Hits You", "That's It', and "That's Where It's At." The bulk of them recorded by the fabulous Nashboro label. Gospel historian Opal Louis Nations portrays Prof. Boggs intriguing life story while also giving space to Bogg's protege, Lula Reed. This CD is the firs to be entirely devoted to his music. 28 track, 75 minute collection.

JAZZ: Ashby appeared on the scene as if by magic when Jimmy Hamilton retired from the Ellington Orchestra in 1968 - he was in his 40s and had been around for years but much of his early discography was with rhythm-and-blues bands. He went on his own after Duke's death and made European tours with all-star packages. This was his first session as leader for a US-based label, and he takes good advantage of the opportunity.
