COUNTRY & WESTERN: Many years ago, Bear Family issued an LP of Leroy Pullins' Kapp recordings. Long out-of-print, that LP created a steady demand for his recordings on CD. To date, nothing has been released on CD, not even his 1966 pop and country smash hit I'm A Nut. Now Bear Family rectifies that situation, reissuing that original LP plus every other recording we could find by Pullins, including previously unissued sides. The success of Roger Miller in the mid-1960s led others to work in his style, but no one except Pullins really managed it. The same offbeat humor, the same undercurrent of darkness and weirdness and social commentary. A minor classic.

Later Sam Donahue started his own band, at which time Ray hired various other personalities to front the band, the last one being England's own Andy Prior. The arrangements in this album were all written by Billy May at different times, for different recordings, which were compiled for this CD. The line up features a variety of swing musicians including Si Zentner, Johnny Best, Manny Klein, Wilbur Schwartz, Skeets Herfurt, Gorgie Auld, Leo Anthony, Alvin Stoller, Al Hendrickson and more.

BIG BAND: Leroy Anthony was born in Dover, Ohio, in 1925. The six children in the family were exposed at a young age to music through their parents and their father led an orchestra well known in the area at dances and functions. After High School, Leroy concentrated on alto sax in a local band and gained experience. His talent was obvious and in 1946 he joined brother Ray Anthony's Orchestra as the baritone sax player. A key player in the band, Leroy or Leo, was featured on many broadcasts and recordings. His experience left him well equipped to form his own band in the 1950's. High standard playing, original writing and and the distinctive baritone sax of the leader are the reasons the band was a commercial success.

BIG BAND: Almost twenty years after Bob Crosby and his Blackhawk band Ray Anthony assembled a cast of Dixieland and Jazz greats to record a collection of New Orleans tunes, which combined the historic style of the city's music with a big modern sound to create Big Band Dixieland Swing. Arrangers Heinie Beau and Matty Matlock wrote new arrangements of standards to give the sessions a freshness and swing that characterized Anthony's style of the mid 1950's. Great players from the old Bob Crosby band, Matty Matlock, Eddie Miller, Zeke Zarchy, joined Charlie Teagarden, Manny Klein, Nick Fatool, Paul Smith, and Conrad Gozzo in the impressive lineup. They produced outstanding recordings still much appreciated fifty years later. Ray Anthony plays the trumpet solos and leads the band on these tracks recorded in the 1950's.
