SOUL: 'Gamblers Blues' by Nancy Wilcox sold for a four figure sum a few years back and was a dance-floor hit when spun at southern Northern venues. 'I Hear Music' is one of Lorraine Chandler's most beautiful and haunting songs and deserves greater recognition.

SOUL: The second volume of Pied Piper material on CD featured one of the biggest Northern Soul hits of the 2010s. 'He'll Be Leaving You' by Nancy Wilcox is an ultra-fast version of the Willie Kendrick song with a gender switch thrown in ('He...' not 'She...'). It is paired with the brilliant Lorraine Chandler singing one of the songs that started Jack Ashford on his Pied Piper journey; originally cut on Yvonne Baker before it got the Detroit treatment.

SOUL: Not previously available in its entirety on CD, 1964's aptly titled "Queen Of Soul" LP was produced in the main by Billy Davis, the A&R man who helped transform Chess Records from renowned purveyors of 1950s blues and R&B into one of the hippest soul outlets of the 1960s. The original 10-track album is bolstered with 14 bonus titles recorded between 1962 and 1965. Together they show Etta's many sides, from the punchy soul of 'Pay Back' and 'Only Time Will Tell' to gorgeously orchestrated revivals of jazz standards such as 'Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be)', with a few Nashville-cut country tunes included for good measure. 1. Bobby Is His Name 2. I Wish Someone Would Care 3. That Man Belongs Back Here With Me 4. Somewhere Out There 5. Breaking Point 6. Flight 101 7. Loving You More Every Day 8. Do Right 9. I Worry About You 10. Mellow Fellow 11. You Got Me Where You Want Me 12. Only Time Will Tell 13. Pushover 14. You Can't Talk To A Fool 15. Would It Make Any Difference To You 16. Stop The Wedding 17. How Do You Speak To An Angel 18. Be Honest With Me 19. Pay Back 20. Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be) 21. Two Sides (To Every Story) 22. Tomorrow Night 23. I Can't Hold It In Anymore 24. SOUL: Released in 1976, "Etta Is Betta Than Evvah!" was the final album of Etta James' tumultuous 16-year tenure at Chess Records. The album is issued here on CD for the first time, together with 10 bonus titles from the mid-70s. The self-produced opener, 'Woman (Shake Your Booty)', is a funky rewrite of a song Etta had recorded, as 'W.O.M.A.N', for Modern in 1955 and again for Chess in 1971. 'Only A Fool' and Randy Newman's 'Leave Your Hat On' had been released previously on 1973's "Etta James" album. By 1976 Chess Records had been purchased by All Platinum, at whose New Jersey studio the bulk of "Etta Is Betta Than Evvah!" was recorded with former Motown baritone sax hero Mike Terry producing. The players on the sessions were the All Platinum house band, the Rimshots. 'Little Bit Of Love' and 'I've Been A Fool' were penned by Freddie Beckmeier, the bass player with Etta's own band. The remainder of the album comprised well-chosen covers of 'A Love Vibration' (a fine song from Ann Peebles' "I Can't Stand The Rain" album), 'Groove Me' (a smash hit in 1970 for King Floyd), 'Blinded By Love' (penned by Allen Toussaint and first recorded by Johnny Winter), 'Jump Into Love' (from the catalogue of the group Rufus) and 'Ain't No Pity In The Naked City' (a minor hit for Pat Lundy).

BIG BAND: At the very peak of the band's career, America was forced into war in 1941 after Pearl Harbor, a situation which caused a number of good swing orchestras to disband. Unlike these, Harry James added to his already busy schedule, tours of the U.S. Army camps, air and Naval bases and, via short wave radio, broadcasts throughout the world, bringing a breath of home to war weary servicemen and women. . So it was, all through the war years, that the James "Music-Makers" (as the band came to be known) continued, with slight changes of personnel from time to time, into the uncertain years following the cessation of hostilities in 1945. Our album presents the James band as it sounded in the Autumn of 1946, a sound which has never been bettered. We offer here a varied selection of instrumental and vocal numbers of the period, as well as old friends, given a treatment that still sounds fresh today. James proves here that his band could provide sympathetic backing to such contemporary vocal numbers as "Five Minutes More" "Oh! But I Do" and "Seems Like Old Times" (incidentally, the signature tune of the successful T.V. series "Looks Familiar"), as well as raising the roof with such instrumental standards as his own composition "Flash" and oldies like "Blue Skies" "Lover come Back To Me" and "Two O'Clock Jump."

BIG BAND: Name any jazz trumpeter of the twentieth century and amongst the handful that readily spring to mind will be Harry James. Critics have claimed that James had a florid style of playing and there is an element of truth in that he was raised in a circus family and learned the razz-a-mataz of show business at an early age. On this CD we feature a number of instrumental tracks and a mixture of vocals from some of the finest singers of the big band era...enjoy.
