BIG BAND: It has often been said that the finest of all British dance bands - at least during the 1930s - was that led by Bert Ambrose. Glenn Miller is often credited with having invented the trademark of using the device of the clarinet on top of the saxophone section, but if we listen to a number of the tracks in this set from 1933/35, recorded several years before Miller was known as a bandleader at all, we find this device in use - not as a matter of course, but with sparing good taste. Bert Read, Bert Barnes and Sid Phillips were arrangers par excellence; there was little that they could have been taught by their American cousins - and years later, the Americans gave credit where it was due. Features Max Goldberg, Harry Owen, Ted Heath, Tony Thorpe, Danny Polo, Sid Phillips and others.

"The Bert Ambrose Orchestra of 1929 as recording artists and resident dance orchestra at the May Fair Hotel was a friendly group of excellent musicians who took pride in their work. There were no alcoholics, no tardiness on sessions or at the hotel. It was quite a group of gentlemen in formal attire, wing collars and stiff shirts. . Jimmy Dorsey, in London with Ted Lewist said we were-the world's greatest dance orchestra. The Ambrose band had the steadiest beat of any band I ever played for!" - Sylvester Ahola (1980).
