JAZZ: (2-CD set) Born in Reserve, Louisiana, about 40 miles west of New Orleans on the Mississippi River, Hall and his siblings were born into a musical family. His father, Edward Blainey Hall, and mother, Caroline Duhe, had eight children, his father, Edward, played the clarinet in the Onward Brass Band, joined by Edmond's maternal uncles, Jules Duhe on trombone, Lawrence Duhe on clarinet, and Edmond Duhe on guitar. The Hall brothers, Robert, Edmond, and Herbert, all became clarinetists, but Edmond was first taught guitar by his uncle Edmond. When Hall finally picked up the clarinet, "he could play it within a week. He started Monday and played it Saturday". Hall worked as a farmhand, but by 1919 he had become tired of the hard work, and despite his parents' worries of finding a decent job as a musician, he left for New Orleans. The first New Orleans band he played with was that of Bud Rousell and he was to go on to grace the bands of many of the most famous names in Jazz. On this double CD he is featured with the Ralph Sutton Quartet.

BIG BAND: This CD features three sessions from the great Ralph Flanagan And His Orchestra. The first session was recorded for the Armed Forces Radio "All Star Parade Of Bands" number eleven, from the Hollywood Palladium in February 1954. The second for the Armed Forces "One Night Stand" radio program of June the 6th 1958 from The Chase Club, MO. The third program is also for the Armed Forces Radio Service "One Night Stand" program, this time from The Hotel Peabody in Memphis, Tennessee on the 7th of November 1958. Flanagans was one of the top orchestras in the business. Most of the polls of the period including Billboard's annual disc jockey poll voted Ralph Flanagans band number one. These recordings were made at the peak of his career. Towards the end of the fifties he gave up the big band and would then perform with small combos of five or six musicians. This is your chance to hear and collect rare 'live" recordings from from one of the finest bands of the period.

BIG BAND: As regards record sales, the battle between the orchestras of Tex Beneke and Ralph Flanagan was won decisively by the latter during the years 1949/50. Tex who was leading the official Glenn Miller Orchestra was a victim of a policy decision made by the moguls at RCA who wanted to teach artists eager for an increase in fees a lesson. Ralph Flanagan and Tex Beneke have fought this battle before on CD, on Sounds Of Yesteryear SOY 789, "The Duel Of The Dancebands", but that was a fictional fight. This is the real thing! These are 78s and 45s which young Americans went out to buy in 1949, The records heard on the radio and played on jukeboxes.

BIG BAND: It was in 1946 that Rainbow Records released the first records under the Ralph Flanagan name, a four record album entitled "A Tribute To Glenn Miller". Flanagan had co-opted a band made up of Miller alumni and top studio men and eight sides were recorded. The Miller men in Flanagan's orchestra made up the whole trumpet section and nearly half of the Rainbow Records Orchestra! They include Bobby Hackett, Mickey McMickle and Bernie Privin (trumpets) Al Klink (tenor saxophone) Ernie Caceres (baritone saxophone) Carmen Mastren (guitar)and Trigger Alpert (bass). As Glenn Miller is Ralph Flanagan's hero, we have selected thirteen Miller recordings and paired them off with Flanagan recordings of a similar type to see how they compare.

SOUL: Debut album from longtime southern Alabama soul shouter who got his start working in Muscle Shoals at Fame and has never quit, from his rare northern soul 45s to burned CDRs and finally this album. Cut over three years between his house in Alabama and studios around Chicago, the album is co-produced, mixed, mastered and features playing by Todd Rittmann (US Maple/Dead Rider). Also features southern blues diva Nellie 'Tiger' Travis, members of Mucca Pazza, The Drastics, Black Bear Combo and Detholz! as well as various players from Columbus, GA. The set's a soul record through and through - not one of these modern funk workouts with an old singer thrown into the mix - but the kind of old school album you'd hear from Malaco or Criteria Studios - particularly during that point when deep soul was growing up in the 70s. Production and arrangements are right on the money. - Dusty Groove .the single greatest music release of 2012 that you almost certainly have yet to hear. It's got soul, it's got funk, and most importantly, it's got more authenticity than the Alabama Shakes playing on a back porch during a 95-degree day in Jackson, Mississippi. This, friends, is what soul music is supposed to be. - Popmatters Tracks are relatively stripped down, with lots of great organ, steady rolling grooves and some nice horn playing. Southern fried soul is the recipe, so bits of gospel, blues and country hover around the edges. Jackson's voice can twist from husky to smooth, and he's got a nice command of the mid range, and sounds strong - Blurt Magazine The Alabama Love Man is a trip into the deep south, where there sprawls an optimism of love seemingly uncanny to a generation of tech geeks and window bashers. It captures one of the most soulful voices the world has probably never heard before - Okayplayer This is a terrific record from start to finish, and one I will play often in the coming weeks. My only criticism of it is that there's just not enough of it! Still, you can play it twice through in quick succession and not get bored, which is more than can be said for many other contemporary albums - Tony Rouncy, Ace/Kent Records "An unhinged talent whom latter-day louches like Nick Cave can only hope to imitate" - Ann Powers, LA Times

JAZZ: With "Merely A Traveler On The Cosmic Path" drummer and percussionist Adam Rudolph and Ralph Jones on various woodwind instruments present their first studio recording as a duo. Their first recorded collaboration, YEYI (MTA 11) was voted one of the years top 10 CDs of 2011 by NY City Jazz Record. Dusty Groove called it "A dreamlike flow of elemental sounds and masterful moods". Rudolph's refers to Jones as "the greatest woodwind player you may not have heard of," and the description is apt. Jones' wide-ranging career has included recordings and performances with the likes of Yusef Lateef, Pharaoh Sanders, Ahmed Abdul Malik, Ella Fitzgerald, Wadada Leo Smith, Ken Cox, Detroit's MC5, and his own group, The Seekers of Truth Revolutionary Ensemble.

JAZZ: Pete Jolly and Ralph Pena toured New Zealand in September of 1960. They were the first jazz artists to perform at many of the venues there, and were a great success. Their last performance at the Colony Club in Auckland on Sept. 18, 1960 was recorded and released on a non-commercial LP. This CD presents the full recorded concert, the LP tracks, plus two selections that never made it on to the record. This was a very fine performance before a very appreciative audience.
