JAZZ: (2-CD set) Born in Reserve, Louisiana, about 40 miles west of New Orleans on the Mississippi River, Hall and his siblings were born into a musical family. His father, Edward Blainey Hall, and mother, Caroline Duhe, had eight children, his father, Edward, played the clarinet in the Onward Brass Band, joined by Edmond's maternal uncles, Jules Duhe on trombone, Lawrence Duhe on clarinet, and Edmond Duhe on guitar. The Hall brothers, Robert, Edmond, and Herbert, all became clarinetists, but Edmond was first taught guitar by his uncle Edmond. When Hall finally picked up the clarinet, "he could play it within a week. He started Monday and played it Saturday". Hall worked as a farmhand, but by 1919 he had become tired of the hard work, and despite his parents' worries of finding a decent job as a musician, he left for New Orleans. The first New Orleans band he played with was that of Bud Rousell and he was to go on to grace the bands of many of the most famous names in Jazz. On this double CD he is featured with the Ralph Sutton Quartet.

BIG BAND: Ralph Flanagan was a famed big band leader, conductor, pianist, composer, and arranger for the orchestras of Hal McIntyre, Sammy Kaye, Blue Barron, Charlie Barnet, and Alvino Rey. During World War II he served in the Merchant Marine from October 1942 to 1946. By 1949 he formed a very successful orchestra which is credited with re-popularizing the Glenn Miller "sound," and which made many records, among them Singing Winds; Rag Mop; Hot Toddy and Flanagan's Boogie. The Ralph Flanagan band was managed by Herb Hendler, who had signed Glenn Miller to his final record contract before Miller's fatal plane crash in the English Channel during World War II . It was Hcndler who had encouraged Flanagan to adopt the Miller sound that led to his success. Hendler also co-wrote "Hot Toddy," which was recorded by many artists, including Chet Atkins, Rosemary Clooney, Red Foley and Julie London. The Flanagan orchestra's theme songs were "Giannina Mia" and "Singing Winds", the latter title also applying to the orchestra's singing group.

BIG BAND: As regards record sales, the battle between the orchestras of Tex Beneke and Ralph Flanagan was won decisively by the latter during the years 1949/50. Tex who was leading the official Glenn Miller Orchestra was a victim of a policy decision made by the moguls at RCA who wanted to teach artists eager for an increase in fees a lesson. Ralph Flanagan and Tex Beneke have fought this battle before on CD, on Sounds Of Yesteryear SOY 789, "The Duel Of The Dancebands", but that was a fictional fight. This is the real thing! These are 78s and 45s which young Americans went out to buy in 1949, The records heard on the radio and played on jukeboxes.

BIG BAND: It was in 1946 that Rainbow Records released the first records under the Ralph Flanagan name, a four record album entitled "A Tribute To Glenn Miller". Flanagan had co-opted a band made up of Miller alumni and top studio men and eight sides were recorded. The Miller men in Flanagan's orchestra made up the whole trumpet section and nearly half of the Rainbow Records Orchestra! They include Bobby Hackett, Mickey McMickle and Bernie Privin (trumpets) Al Klink (tenor saxophone) Ernie Caceres (baritone saxophone) Carmen Mastren (guitar)and Trigger Alpert (bass). As Glenn Miller is Ralph Flanagan's hero, we have selected thirteen Miller recordings and paired them off with Flanagan recordings of a similar type to see how they compare.

BIG BAND: A natural leader like Ralph Marterie was valued by musicians and music companies alike and Mercury Records approached Ralph to record for the label in 1948. The resulting success of a series of singles built up a solid following for the band and a touring band was formed to play around the Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan area. In 1952 'Caravan' hit the Billboard juke box charts and stayed for ten weeks. More hits followed such as 'Guaglione', 'Tequila' and Skokiaan. Featured vocalists with the touring band included Bill Watters, Lou Prano and Janice Borte. During the 1950's the orchestra was also featured on the Marlboro Radio Shows and Cavalcade of Bands TV Shows often introducing the broadcast with the Theme, 'Trumpeters Lullaby.'
