JAZZ: What makes this group so important is the relationship that exists between its members. Bassist Jason Ajemian (Chicago Underground Trio, Lay All Over It, Born Heller) saxophonist Tim Haldeman, and drummer Nori Tanaka are regulars on the Chicago improvisation scene. Joined here by vibist Jason Adasiewicz (Loose Assembly, Exploding Star Orchestra, Aat), trumpeter Jaimie Branch, and guitarist Matt Schneider this prolific, expansive and inventive group becomes a sonic family on this release. The interplay between the players is ceaseless in reawakening the heart of what is jazz today. Like a conversation among old friends its intimacy is palpable; warm, friendly and at ease.

JAZZ: Jason Ajemian's music conjures a fever dream of multiple musical universes. The bassist-composer has acquired a high profile during his years in Chicago & New York, performing with Marc Ribot's Sun Ship, Matt Bauder's Day In Pictures, Matana Robert's CoinCoin, Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra & Chicago Underground Trio. Folklords has an outstanding group of New York improvisers (Kid Bliss, Owen Stewart-Robertson & Jason Nazary) performing conceptual, visual & sonic landscapes: meditative Mingus ballads, imaginary conversations between Sun Ra & Thelonious Monk, poetic takes on pop culture, and an elegy for Malachi Rischter.

JAZZ: In a review of Jason Stein's debut album, The Story This Time (Delmark 2013), JazzTimes said "This record kills. The double-horn front line allows for torrid, bop-rooted synchronicity and numerous moments of unfettered exploration." Stein understands the bass clarinet's history and seeks to extend its comfort zone, and he's not prone to move into the stratosphere, staying in the natural range on his instrument, but picking up the pace manually, the overland route, through force of will. Add to a couple tracks the contrabass clarinet of Keefe Jackson, which ratchets the sound down into the substrata a few notches, and the uncanny play between the anchor and the waves is even more pronounced.

JAZZ: It does take courage to record a solo CD on bass clarinet. But Jason Stein knows exactly what he is doing. Being a very active member of the Chicago new music scene, his solos are not songs, per se, nor displays of bravado or ostentation. As Art Lange writes in his liner notes, "his are, to my ear, spontaneous etudes... Stein's solo improvisations are not abstract exercises. They are literally about the way he plays the bass clarinet, how his breath filters through it and is transformed into degrees of pitch, texture, tone color, percussion, and voice..."

JAZZ: Los Angeles-based drummer and composer Jason Smith, with Gary Husband and Dave Carpenter, have crafted a refreshing and uncompromising vision of the jazz trio in Smith's debut recording as a leader, "Think Like This." This outing mixes new compositions like "Gnu York" and "Taylor Made" with ambitious and inventive interpretations of works by Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock and Kenny Wheeler. It's an audiophile piano trio recording of exceptional quality, and features the debut of Gary Husband in a jazz trio setting as a pianist. Members of Smith's trio have backed up artists such as Allan Holdsworth, Mike Keneally, Branford Marsalis and countless other jazz luminaries.

JAZZ: With "Throw Down Your Hammer and Sing" Nate Wooley (trumpet) Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello and electronics) and Jason Roebke (bass) create an alien landscape of strange sounds that ebb and flow between sparse instrumentation and dense layers of sound. These three musicians play their instruments in a way that at times it's hard to know what instrument is creating what sound. Improvisational, experimental, electronic, acoustic music at it's best.

JAZZ: A live set from May 2006 featuring bassist Dave Carpenter and Gary Husband, who leaves the kit to Smith and focuses exclusively on keyboards. Tipping Point bristles with rock and fusion energy, yet remains unequivocally a jazz record. Featuring original material alongside Kenny Wheeler and John McLaughlin tunes with a couple of standards thrown in for good measure. Harmonically rich and metrically complex yet equally capable of understatement and nuanced elegance, this trio skews tradition while remaining fully conversant in it.

BLUES: This is Jason's first release as band leader in seven years. Of course, he's been busy with other projects including being a special guest on the, late great, Johnny Winter's Grammy winning CD. Jason's TV performance on the induction of the great Paul Butterfield Blues Band into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, was quite an honor. Jason is an amazing innovator of the blues harmonica (and beyond) but this CD is about Jason and his great New Orleans band, The Bad Kind. Their new material further showcases the growth of their incredible talents. This new recording is going to smash any preconceived notions of genre boundaries. I don't think they've come up with a name for the music these cats make. We just call it 'Jason Ricci & the Bad Kind'.

JAZZ: An answer to the future of the orchestra and improvisational music, Jason Kao Hwang's Spontaneous River is an orchestra of over 35 string improvisers plus drum set. Jason is one of the pioneers of contemporary jazz improvisation on the violin and viola, and it is only in recent years that so many string players have engaged in the art of improvisational music. Spontaneous River is an ensemble and a community that represents this emerging movement. The power of Spontaneous River is drawn from both the sonic unity of strings and the undeniable individualism of each musician's "voice." Mr. Hwang's composition, Symphony of Souls is a spontaneous flow of notated passages and conducted improvisations that express stories abundant with flora, fauna and dreams of the human spirit.

INTERNATIONAL: Left of Sunday Afternoon, the latest release by Austin guitarist Darin Layne, is a journey at once familiar and exotic. Layne, known for his soulful jazz work as leader of the Darin Layne Trio and his traditional Brazilian /choro/ interpretations as a leader of the Crying Monkeys, teams with world percussionist Jason McKenzie (Atash) to deliver ten tracks structured organically around the dynamic combination of acoustic guitar and tabla. The album contains nine original compositions, plus a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Black Mountainside". Layne and McKenzie are joined by other notable Austin musicians, including violinist Roberto Riggio (Atash) and cellist Joey Santori (Rajamani), adding the sensuous touch of strings to certain tracks.
