JAZZ: Chet Baker was the face of 1950s West Coast jazz. His sublime trumpet-playing combined with film-star good looks made him a star. His recordings for Pacific Jazz were the very apex of his career, and often considered the finest of these were the sessions that produced "Chet Baker & Crew". Six years later Pacific sold this set of out-takes to Modern. Featuring saxophonist Phil Urso and pianist Bobby Timmons, these are every bit as good as the originally released versions. This updated 2013 version has been remastered from source tapes, has fresh sleeve notes and is packaged in a digipack with new artwork. Tracks are the same but in a different running order.

Recorded between 1966 & 1968, it followed their successful period at Sue Records, where "Mockingbird" scored a #2 R&B hit. This is the only CD compilation of their Dynamo recordings available, and it also includes a superb later version of "Mockingbird" with strings.

EASY LISTENING: Here are the first two of several easy listening albums that Chet Baker fronted for World Pacific Records in the mid-60. Essentially a hipper version of Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, it featured many of L.A.'s most high-profile sessioneers of the 1960s, several of whom also played in the TJB. Some of the most notable players here include Tom Scott, Herb Ellis, Don Peake, Victor Feldman, Julius Wechter, Dennis Budimir, Al Casey and notable "Wrecking Crew" alumni Tommy Tedesco, Lyle Ritz, Frank Capp and Bill Pitman. "A Taste Of Tequila" and "Hats Off!" were arranged by Jack Nitzsche. None of the Mariachi Brass albums have ever been reissued.

JAZZ: This is the solo debut by Chicago pianist/synthesist Jim Baker, previously recorded in settings ranging from duets to Ken Vandermark's Territory Bands, and from third-stream projects (with Guillermo Gregorio) to rock groups (with Nicholas Tremulis). Having previously collaborated with reedists (Fred Anderson, Kyle Bruckmann, Nicole Mitchell, Ken Vandermark, Mars Williams) and with various trios (bassists Harrison Bankhead, Josh Abrams; cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm; percussionists Avreeyal Ra, Michael Zerang), Baker set himself the seemingly-paradoxical task of recording an album of free improvisations -- on both piano and analogue synthesizer -- which would have a "somewhat or somehow tuneful" character. Baker has been described as "deeply unusual."

BLUES: Studebaker John has always had one foot in the blues and one foot in rock & roll, but always liked the raw less-is-more sound, that he first heard on Chicago's Maxwell St. Artists that recorded blues and R&B songs like Elvis, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed, Freddy King, Slim Harpo all had hit records played on the AM radio Top 100. Then Bob Dylan shook things up with his going electric at the Newport Folk Festival (using the Butterfield Blues Band as his back up). Then came the English bands and some of them were very good, still a raw sound, even louder and faster than before. But enough of history. This album is one for the people, 14 all new original songs called Old School Rockin'.

BLUES: As a teenager John Grimaldi worked in the family plumbing business that sometimes took him to Chicago's Maxwell Street open-air market. There he saw musicians playing raw, amplified blues. After seeing Hound Dog Taylor perform John knew he had to play slide guitar. Under the spell of these music experiences he started performing as Studebaker John in the '70s. Almost forty years and a dozen albums later Studebaker John is still creating new songs, (Kingsville Jukin' is over an hour of all new originals) still rockin' the blues the way they did on Maxwell Street. The band also features Rick Kreher, guitar; Bob Halaj, bass and Steve Cushing, drums.

JAZZ: This CD is a thank-you note from pianist George Cables to Dexter Gordon for sharing his stories, his talents, his music, and his Dexterness with us. The music is a combination of Dexter's compositions and songs that he liked to play - songs that make Cables think of Dexter. In Dexter's band was the legendary drummer Eddie Gladden and virtuoso bassist Rufus Reid, truly a magical combination. Unfortunately, Eddie has since passed away - but happily, drummer Victor Lewis, another Dexter Gordon alumnus, was able to join bassist Reid and Cables for this project.

BLUES: It was 1958 when a passably successful R&B singer entered the recording studio with an all-star band to tape a dozen songs from the global repertoire of a legendary blues vocalist. The old-fashioned style in LaVern Baker's tribute to Bessie Smith might seem somewhat strange in the midst of popular R&B numbers and the growing productivity of the Motown hit machines, but it certainly found favor with the public.

BIG BAND: Swing music had been building up for a year or two, but it was in 1935 that the bubble really burst and the accent was certainly on swing for these previously rare items which were specially recorded between April and August 1938, now featured on this CD. The Fox outfit was well equipped with jazz-tinged musicians to play the swinging arrangements of these standards. Here we have then, the music of Roy Fox and his Band, With vocals by: Denny Dennis, Mary Lee and Sid Buckman, a combination worthy of the talents of all the musicians and an orchestra that contained one of the most elusive of qualities...style.

BIG BAND: Time is the infallible test of everything and the selections in this set - selections from the champagne era of popular music - have most certainly stood the test of the passing years. The items here are of 1938 vintage, but the emphasis is placed on the sweeter side of the band's performances and the spotlight falls more often on the band's vocalists, Denny Dennis, Mary Lee and Sid Buckman than on the band itself. If you love dance band music from another, more glamorous era, then this trip down memory is the one for you.

SOUL: Sam Baker's voice was one of the most distinctive and expressive of the southern soul genre and his falsetto bursts were simply thrilling. His most consistent period was from 1965-1969 when he was produced by WLAC radio DJ John Richbourg for the Nashville label Sound Stage 7. This album is a complete collection of his historic Sound Stage 7 recordings with informative liner notes by John Ridley.

JAZZ: First released under the title "Playboys" in 1956 it was then re-released under the title "Picture Of Heath" in 1961 perhaps owing to the fact it carried the same name as a popular men's magazine. This was the third session together of the dynamic duo of Chet Baker and Art Pepper the previous two having been unequivocal successes. Baker and Pepper have an instinctual rapport that yields outstanding interplay. These thoroughly enjoyable and often high-energy sides are perfect for bop connoisseurs as well as mainstream jazz listeners.

JAZZ: (2-LP set) The numbers heard on Chet Baker & Crew were among a prolific flurry of recordings Baker was involved in during the last week of July 1956 - fresh from an extended European stay. The crew on these sides includes Phil Urso (tenor sax), Bobby Timmons (piano), Jimmy Bond (bass), Peter Littman (drums), and of course Baker (trumpet/vocals). The band members take full advantage of their individual roles and abilities as soloists to really stretch out on "Slightly Above Moderate" and the Urso-credited composition "Halema" - named after Baker's wife. The chemistry of cool that flows between Urso and Baker is perhaps at its finest during the seamless exchange heard on "Worryin' the Life Out of Me." Timmons also boasts notable contributions throughout. His playful and scampering style dresses up the bluesy "Lucius Lu" and "Line for Lyons," among others. The latter is also notable as it contains the sole Baker vocal on this set.

JAZZ: The fact that Kenny Baker was asked to lead the Harry James band after the great trumpeter's death is a testimony to the English trumpeter's ability. Baker came to prominence in the original Ted Heath band, leaving in 1950 to pursue a very successful solo career. He only employed the best British musicians, such as Phil Seaman, George Chisholm, Bill Le Sage & Derek Smith, all heard here. These 22 never before released studio recordings date from the mid-1950s.
