JAZZ: The James Taylor Quartet's final album for Acid Jazz, first issued in the summer of 1996, was a return to their roots with straight-ahead Hammond instrumentals. It is the sound of the touring Quartet, which was a six-piece, plus a percussionist, doing what they did best: playing together. The music stretches from Lonnie Liston Smith-style jazz funk, through out-and-out funk, tinged in places with touches of Keith Emerson. Includes the original 11 track release plus 4 bonus tracks.

JAZZ: In a review of Jason Stein's debut album, The Story This Time (Delmark 2013), JazzTimes said "This record kills. The double-horn front line allows for torrid, bop-rooted synchronicity and numerous moments of unfettered exploration." Stein understands the bass clarinet's history and seeks to extend its comfort zone, and he's not prone to move into the stratosphere, staying in the natural range on his instrument, but picking up the pace manually, the overland route, through force of will. Add to a couple tracks the contrabass clarinet of Keefe Jackson, which ratchets the sound down into the substrata a few notches, and the uncanny play between the anchor and the waves is even more pronounced.

GOSPEL: Founded in 1934, The Golden Gate Quartet was one of the main emblems of the advent of Afro-American music in history. Having invented a complete musical genre, the Quartet decided to cut this new disc in Raleigh near Charlotte, the region which nourished and encouraged the development of The Golden Gate Quartet. Headed by Clyde Wright, second tenor and narrator since 1954 and Paul Brembly, baritone since 1971, The Golden Gate Quartet presents a spectacular new image with rap phrasing which is simply the modernisation of the narrative style and with mixing of tones resembling the sound of today's R'n'B. This novel concept proves that the world's most famous vocal quartet is still extremely active, while still maintaining its original essence.

JAZZ: (2-LP set) Many critics regard Dave Brubeck's Carnegie Hall concert from February 1963 as his greatest ever live appearance. But who can really determine that? For no one - apart from Brubeck himself - would have seen and heard his conservatively estimated 12,000 concerts. Although the twelve titles had already been released on LPs that had been recorded in the studio, these records were certainly not known to all those in the audience. In between the numbers on each LP, Brubeck made little 'advertising spots' in short comments, but with such charm and wit that one really cannot be angry with him. The concert programme begins with "St. Louis Blues" and ends with "Take Five". Luckily, the solos are distributed among all the musicians, so that Paul Desmond and Joe Morello - whose prowess on this evening can only be called 'amazingly good' - justifiably received enthusiastic applause from both the audience and us alike. "Castilian Drums" demonstrates Morello's wealth of ideas and his grandiose feeling for rhythm; though short, Paul Desmond's solos ("Southern Scene" is a good example!) are compelling, highly melodic, lyrical and possess a unique tone - as such they are immediately recognisable. How fortunate that the twelve brilliantly improvised numbers are now available once again on vinyl, having been recorded live at the legendary Carnegie Hall 60 years ago.." Recording: February 1963 Carnegie Hall, New York Production: Teo Macero." "At Carnegie Hall" - Dave Brubeck (p); Paul Desmond (as); Eugene Wright (b); Joe Morello (dr)." gatefold sleeve

CLASSICAL: Dmitri Shostakovich: String Quartets No. 4 op. 83 and No. 8 op. 110 - The Borodin String Quartet The stony path towards artistic freedom which led through the thicket of the Soviet dictatorship appeared to have become somewhat smoother for Shostakovich with this recording. It was something of a small sensation that a recording team from the West was permitted to travel to Moscow to tape and thus preserve music by a contemporary composer for the western market. And that the Mercury team brought back a recording (along with other tapes) that would stand on an exalted platform even in times of a political thaw is a stroke of luck. The Borodin String Quartet approaches Shostakovich's modernistic, personal style methodically and with great expression, bedded as it is in romantic musical tradition. Although it isn't done to draw attention to the performance of one player over the remaining three, one really must mention the cellist Berlinski who plays his part in the Quartet No. 4 with breathtaking cantabile and assurance. The Quartet No. 8 is special for a quite different reason: Shostakovich dedicated this piece to himself as a sort of personal requiem by working his initials DSCH (D, E flat, C, B natural in German notation) into the score and also included numerous citations from earlier works such as the First Symphony and Clarinet Trio op. 67. In this way both the music and the recording guarantee a very personal confrontation with the composer. Recording: June 1962 in Bolshoi Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Moscow, Russia, by C.R. Fine and Robert Eberenz / Production: Wilma Cozart
