BLUES:
Chicago music buffs eagerly anticipate the second weekend of June for the annual Chicago Blues Festival and if that weren't enough of an incentive to bring out-of-towners into our city, it's also when the Bob Koester's Jazz Record Mart hosts its annual Blues Brunch. This CD was recorded at the 2005 Blues Brunch with Michael Coleman's group acting as the core band. Also features Willie Kent, Bonnie Lee, Little Arthur Duncan (all three now passed away making this disc all the more crucial), Lurrie Bell, Steve Freund, Zora Young, Shirley Johnson, Tail Dragger and Aaron Moore. An entertaining hour-long smorgasbord of no-nonsense straight ahead Chicago blues.

This solo piano release is Michael Pagan's first CD for Capri. His command of the keyboard has been said to be akin to Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum, with references to Horace Silver, Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner. Add to those his other admitted influences of Chick Corea, Clare Fischer, Dick Hyman and George Shearing and you have a broad range of styles. Happily, what comes out is neither an eclectic reworking nor a succession of the individual styles, but rather remarkable fresh, creative and distinctive approach all its own.

BIG BAND:
Every one of Michael Pagan's tunes on this recording reveals fresh, original ideas, brilliantly extended and developed. Each chart is clearly conceived, and while tonality prevails in Pagan's writing, it is often veiled by added-note chords and chromaticism. His work is a model of big band arranging. In some ways his work suggests the Thad Jones school, although you can hear the influences of Bill Holman and Clare Fischer. He has put together an outstanding band that includes musicians like Greg Gisbert, John Hines, Brad Goode, and of course, the fine piano work of Pagan. Pagan was recognized by Downbeat magazine as a "Musician Deserving Wider Recognition."

At the very end of his garden, well hidden behind the bushes, pianist Michel Wintsch has installed an illegal distillery, where he takes refuge as an assiduous alchemist. He combines acoustic keyboards, analog and synthetic, strings and skins, and then diverts a range of implements in order to create a free flowing network. He uses it shamelessly until he extracts a concentrate of scathing attacks with an unlisted alcohol content from its phonic clusters. His piano, extended as well as prepared, is a percussion orchestra that the composer and unique performer conducts, sometimes with the help of drum elements and sensory prostheses of various materials.

ROCK:
Since 1985, Michael Hall has been writing and recording rootsy rock 'n roll songs with the Wild Seeds, the Setters, and the Woodpeckers. He's played and recorded with Alejandro Escovedo, Jon Dee Graham, Walter Salas-Humara, Rosie Flores, Vicki Peterson, and members of Fastball, Poi Dog Pondering and Lyle Lovett's Large Band. His songs have been covered by the Silos, Kris McKay, the Vulgar Boatmen and Mike Ireland. He's toured the U.S. with Los Lobos and Europe with Richard Buckner. He recorded a 38 minute song, and organized Gloriathon, playing "Gloria" for 24 hours with dozens of Austin musicians (Van Morrison phoned in his part). Now Hall's recorded his 7th solo album with producers Jud Newcomb and George Reiff.
