This CD pays tribute to the great trumpet player through striking arrangements of his compositions, unique orchestrations of his solos, and improvised solos by some of Mark Masters' favorite musicians. On this recording, all of the ensemble arrangements were written by Mark Masters except three, which were written by Jack Montrose for the original Pacific Jazz LP from 1954. Clifford Brown's brilliant solos from the original date are played here by a quartet of trumpet players (Marc Lewis, Ron Stout, Kye Palmer and Ron King). The project brings Clifford's music to life!

"Porgy and Bess" was Gershwin's longest and most ambitious work as well as his personal favorite. Many jazz arrangers have found the epic folk opera's thematic material fertile ground for embellishment and reinvention. Masters' "in and out" approach recasts the music while retaining its substance. He used the original vocal score which has no chord changes, freeing him to some extent harmonically. Masters' efforts are aided immeasurably by an ensemble of superb musicians who not only play the notes but convey the spirit. He has succeeded in bringing his own concept to these familiar pieces. Features soloists Billy Harper, Tim Hagens, Gary Smulyan and others.

(SACD-HYBRID) All but forgotten, Gary McFarland has long been relegated by jazz history to footnote status. For Mark Masters, it was obviously an intimidating task to arrange an arranger's compositions, but has succeeded while paying homage to McFarland and underscoring the music with his own unique style. For anyone already familiar with McFarland's music, this album will be a treat, as it includes three never before recorded compositions. For listeners new to McFarland, this album will be a great introduction. Masters always selects fabulous soloists on his recordings and on this one he enlists trumpeter Tim Hagans, pianist Steve Kuhn, and baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan.

Anastasia Markina has won many prestigious piano competitions, and has continued her education at the University of North Texas in the studio of renowned Professor Vladimir Viardo. Promotion is planned to national print media, classical publications and to selected radio. The first two CDs by guitarist Mark O'Leary with Matthew Shipp, Mat Maneri and Randy Peterson created quite a stir. This time he recorded with the ECM trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and one of the best drummers in the world, Billy Hart. There are 14 tracks on this CD: variants, rites, rituals, improvisations and carefully considered pre-written material. Steve Day, who wrote the notes for this CD, suggests that they come together as one composition, but none of it stays in one place -- the music levitates.
