| LEO'S FIVE |
DIRECT FROM THE BLUE NOTE CLUB (Stock on hand: 3) |
CD: $19.98 (US) - ($17.98 with *discount) | ACE - UK |
12/5/2008 | |
| OLDIES: Ultra-desirable, early 60s St. Louis R & B. The late vocalist Leo Gooden was an important local mover-and-shaker whose ear for talent helped him assemble one of the best bands of its time. Assembled initially to be the house band at Gooden's Blue Note Club, "Leo's Five" soon took on an identity of their own. The driving rhythm section of drummer Kenny Rice and organist Don James was something of a prototype for the small Jazz-R&B combos that abounded on the early-mid 60s, such as those of Jimmy McGriff and Jimmy Smith, while the hard saxophone of tenor player Charles 'Little Man' Wright led a horn section to die for.Tracks are: Hold It, C.O.D. - Albert King, Worsome Baby - Albert King, Lonesome - Albert King, You Threw Your Love On Me Too Strong - Albert King, Let's Do The Cat - Jamie Ross with Leo's Five, So Glad - Charles Drain, Stop And Think About It - Charles Drain, High Heel Sneakers, Something You Got, Sunrise Serenade, Cookin' With Chezie Mae, Frederick's Dream, Ol' Man River Part 1, Ol' Man River Part 2, Winkee-Do - Leo Gooden, Ugly-Ugly - Leo Gooden, Tippin', Johnny Comes Marching Home, Mop Water, Minor Over Matter. | |||||

| COUNT FIVE |
PSYCHOTIC REVELATION (Stock on hand: 4) |
CD: $19.98 (US) - ($17.98 with *discount) | BIG BEAT |
7/4/2003 | |
| OLDIES: This is a 24 track definitive compilation of the ultimate one-shot garage band - San Jose, California's Count Five. It's a fresh look at the teenage combo that sent the timeless teen angst anthem "Psychotic Reaction" into the U.S. Top 10 in the summer of 1966. For the first time on a C5 reissue, the original master tapes have been used (previously it was a mixture of appalling fake stereo and mediocre disc dubs), and the Big Beat sleuths even located the original session tape of "Psychotic," which has a completely different ending. Tape research threw up further alternate takes, unedited versions and fabulous unreleased material from the vaults of Double Shot Records, for whom the C5 recorded a classic LP and several great singles, all of which are here. | |||||
| WEST, TOMMY / TERRY CASHMAN |
HOMETOWN FROLICS / TERRY CASHMAN (Stock on hand: 3) |
CD: $29.98 (US) - ($26.98 with *discount) | CHISWICK |
8/6/2010 | |
| ROCK: (2-CD set) Both Tommy West's "Hometown Frolics" and Terry Cashman's self-titled debut began as the fourth official Cashman & West album with the working title of "Back To The Dawn". It was intended to be the first LP released on their new label, Lifesong, named after their third album for ABC/Dunhill. But the pair found themselves moving in different directions during "Dawn's" recording process, so two intensely personal and musically divergent albums emerged from the sessions instead of just one. Included on this package are previously unreleased Cashman & West outtakes such as the original attempts at 'Things Are Getting Better Now', 'I'll Sing For You', 'David And Dawn', and a very raw 'Back To The Dawn' (whose rhythm section featured the rock group Crack The Sky), all of which reveal the process with which each of the solo albums began. They offer as much of a fly-on-the-wall's perspective as one can have on any recording project's history. For instance, one bonus track is the original version of 'Nightingale', an outtake from the album "Lifesong", re-recorded by West for his solo project as a more upbeat country-rocker modelled during the pop-reign of the Eagles. 'Song For Jane', another "Lifesong" outtake, was a candidate for Cashman's project, but never made the final cut. Also included is the single version of West's 'I Know', a charting 45 that featured the artist on layers of later-added musical instruments. | |||||
| DAVIS, MAXWELL |
BATMAN AND OTHER THEMES (Stock on hand: 1) |
CD: $14.98 (US) - ($13.48 with *discount) | BGP |
3/3/2006 | |
| SOUNDTRACK : In 2006, BGP launches its new outlet - the "BGP Sound Library," which will be the home for a whole slew of funky themes and other inspired 'library style' recordings from Ace's vaults. The first 16 track release is a very rare Maxwell Davis recording from 1966 which was released for a very short period on the U.K. Ember label (as well as on a U.S. Crown LP) in the wake of the Batman craze of 1966, when the famous pop art TV series was at the peak of its popularity. Our release gathers the ten tracks from that album - all in a style that suggests groovy go-go dancers going wild at an all-night happening in the Batcave - plus three related recordings by Maxwell Davis from the period. Davis was one of the true greats of the post-war R&B era. | |||||
| SPIDER'S WEBB |
I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND (Stock on hand: 48) |
CD: $14.98 (US) - ($13.48 with *discount) | BGP |
12/9/2011 | |
| SOUL: Spider's Webb was the brainchild of drummer Spider Webb & his wife Carol Kaye, the renowned bass guitar session player, famed for her work with Spector, Motown, David Axelrod and most notably on the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds". Spider's Webb's album was produced by Jeff Lane, then in demand following his work with BT Express and Brass Construction. The album's title track is an infectious bass-led groove and took off in clubs around the world, that became an early disco hit. It mixed funk with a string arrangement by Brass Construction's Randy Muller. The rest of the album includes club favourites 'I Learned From My Burns' and 'Good Things' and is a collector's classic. | |||||
