JAZZ: Three Musicians is NY-based pianist/composer, Joan Stiles' 3rd CD, a joyful, interactive outing with Joel Frahm (sax) and Matt Wilson (drums). The trio glides and grooves through various jazz styles in brilliant yet accessible explorations of standards, show tunes, Monk, Strayhorn, Mary Lou Williams, and even some Beatles and Clapton. Highlights include collages on Love - "My Funny Valentine" meets "Sunshine of Your Love" and Money - "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" meets "Can't Buy Me Love." Stiles' compositions - "West End Boogie", a soulful, rhythmic blues, and the Gillespie/Dameron inspired "Bebopicity" add to the eclectic mix. FOLK/BLUEGRASS: At the time of its release, Joan Baez's debut album was something of a revelation. The folk music revival was beginning to gather steam, stoked on the popular side by artists such as the Kingston Trio and the Easy Riders, as well as up-and-coming ensembles such as the Highwaymen, and on the more intense and serious side by the Weavers. And then along comes this album, by a 19-year-old displaying a voice from heaven, a soprano so pure and beguiling that the mere act of listening to her - forget what she was singing - was a pleasure. Baez's first album, made up primarily of traditional songs (including a startling version of "House of the Rising Sun"), was beguiling enough to woo even conservative-leaning listeners. 180 gram vinyl.

FOLK/BLUEGRASS: (2-LP set) First released in 1992, Play Me Backwards holds a very special place in the rich 50-year recording history of Joan Baez. The album's sessions brought her back to Nashville for the first time since the series of four albums she had recorded in Music City between 1968 and 1971. Joan reaffirmed her unique ability to identify and interpret successive generations of songwriters whose music had the ability to speak toher: Mary Chapin Carpenter ("Stones In the Road"), John Stewart ("Strange Rivers"), John Hiatt ("Through Your Hands"), the duo of Janis Ian and Buddy Mondlock ("Amsterdam"), and Ron Davies ("Steal Across the Border" and "The Dream Song," co-written with Joan). Play Me Backwards also contains four songs that Joan co-wrote with her two producers ("Play Me Backwards," "Isaac and Abraham," "I'm With You," and "Edge Of Glory," one of the last occasions on which she contributed to an album as a songwriter. Adding historic provenance to this reissue is a second disc containing previously unreleased demos of 10 songs which were contemplated by Joan and her producers, heard here for the first time. Some of the songwriters are not widely known, such as the late Mark Heard ("Rise From the Ruins," "Lonely Moon"), John Hadley ("The Last Day") orGary Nicholson ("Trouble With the Truth"); and one writer is not known at all ("Medicine Wheel"). On the other hand, there are additional songs from Janis Ian ("We Endure") and Ron Davies ("Dark Eyed Man," originally recorded by Kevin Welch as "Dark Eyed Gal"); and one that Joan wrote with Greenberg's wife, the respected Christian artist Ashley Cleveland ("In My Day"). Fans will be immediately drawn to Joan's version of Bob Dylan's "Seven Curses" (his adaptation of the traditional Child ballad "The Maid Freed From the Gallows" aka "Anathea"), the only one of these songs previously recorded by Joan (on the live album Bowery Songs in 2005).

FOLK/BLUEGRASS: Joan Baez's Greatest Hits compilation album was originally released in 1996 and features vocals by Joni Mitchell on the song "Dida". The tracklist includes "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". Baez made her professional debut in 1959 at the Newport Folk Festival and started recording for Vanguard the next year. The material in this CD comes from later in her career, when she had left Vanguard for A&M. This CD contains 24-Bit/100kHz Mastering! This recording has been mastered by the K2 HD format of 24-bit 100kHz, which creates an unbelievable sound surpassing other formats. This K2 HD Mastering CD will play on All CD players.

Titled Je Veux Voir in French, I Want To See cleverly blurs the lines between documentary and fiction. Directors Khalil Joreige and Joana Hadjithomas (A Perfect Day) create a mesmerizing, thought-provoking travelogue in which they appear as filmmakers capturing Deneuve's road-trip on camera. After visiting the crumbling ruins of ancient villages and watching as the shattered remnants of cities and towns are slowly pushed into the sea, Deneuve is somewhat transformed when she arrives later that evening before the myriad photographers ardently capturing her image at the elegant evening gala. JAZZ: For this session recorded by Joanne Brackeen in 1975, she is joined by Cecil McBee and Billy Hart. Shortly after this recording she joined Stan Getz with whom she gained significant exposure during Stan's worldwide tours. This after spells with Woody Shaw, David Liebman, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and Joe Henderson. Joanne has a strong, forceful approach to the piano. Her playing reflects her rapport with Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and McCoy Tyner as well as the aforementioned Art and Joe. She executes runs with furious intensity - cross rhythms abound and each member of this outstanding trio adds fresh ideas, enriching the texture of the tunes.

Brecker proves to have been a brilliant choice, bringing his inspiration to the session as with the superb contributions of all the skilled participants they interpret Brackeen's quite complex original music with considerable aplomb, rhythmic feel and close interplay. There is a lot of variety in tempos and moods within the bop tradition on this recommended set.

VOCALS - JAZZ & POP: While Joanie Sommers is probably best remembered for "Johnny Get Angry" and as the voice of the Pepsi generation, she started out as and continues to be a very gifted jazz vocalist. Her unique voice, perfect phrasing and sophisticated taste is clearly apparent in this collection where she is very ably supported by Shelly Manne and His Men & The Bobby Troup Sextet. The 20 selections on this CD were recorded in Hollywood in the early 60's for The Navy Swings radio programs and have never been released before.
