CD: $16.98 (US) - ($15.28 with *discount) | UPTOWN JAZZ |
8/26/2003 | |
| JAZZ: Tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse is best known for his long association with Thelonious Monk (1959-70) where he earned an international reputation. After leaving Monk, he dropped out of music altogether until 1974 when he started recording again. In 1979, he co-founded Sphere, one of the best straight-ahead groups around. This CD pairs Rouse with his long-time friend Red Rodney (trumpet/flugelhorn), whose bop background, combined with his extraordinary lyricism, make "Social Call" a treat for fans of Rouse and Rodney. This re-issue of the original 1984 album features 3 bonus tracks. | |||||

| JAZZ: When Columbia Records released the Minneapolis' after hours recordings of Charlie Christian, the listener was warned, "The technical quality of these selections is admittedly inferior to the commercial recordings." Not anymore! New digital transfers from the original acetates restore the sound quality. Dating from 1939-40, Christian leaps into the room with his driving rhythm guitar and ultra-modern solos. INSIDE (Stock on hand: 9) |
CD: $15.98 (US) - ($14.38 with *discount) | CHASE |
9/22/2009 | |
| JAZZ: Former George Shearing vibist Charlie Shoemake teams up with pianist Terry Trotter (Lena Horne, Natalie Cole, Joe Pass, Chet Baker) and various bass-drums combinations that include Darek Oles, Joe LaBarbera, Luther Hughes, Paul Krebich, Tom Warrington, and Steve Schaeffer. In addition to being virtually lifelong friends, Shoemake and Trotter share an affinity for the jazz of the 1940's, 50's and early 60's; jazz grounded in the harmonic and rhythmic traditions that shaped the post-bop, modern jazz era. It has been nearly twenty-five years since these two kindred spirits collaborated on a recording project, but it becomes immediately obvious that time has only enhanced their artistry. | |||||

7/1/2005 | |
| OLDIES: Rockabilly legends do not come much bigger than Mac Curtis and the late Charlie Feathers. Here is the best of their combined King Records output, presented in their best-ever sound from newly-made transfers of the original King master and session tapes. The original "Rockabilly Kings" album was released on vinyl over 30 years ago. A landmark release by collector consensus, its reputation has never tarnished and never will. This CD adds a further 10 masters and alternates to the vinyl's original 16 - which, in the interests of authenticity, are presented here in the same running order as the original album. Ace has also retained any relevant between-song session chat and false starts. | |||||

| SOUL: First there was Swamp Dogg, then there was Raw Spitt. Iconic soul maverick Jerry Williams Jr. invented the alias for his prot‚g‚ and friend Charlie Whitehead, and then proceeded to craft the sublime early '70s southern soul and funk. This CD is the first-ever compilation devoted to Whitehead's work with Swamp. All of it was cut during soul's golden age, mostly in the American South. And all of it treads a similar path to Swamp's own trailblazing recordings from the same era. This CD contains the contents of two albums, plus an assortment of rare singles that never made it to LP when first released. Virtually none of these recordings have been reissued on CD before. | |||||
