JAZZ: Jazz has had its share of archival discoveries, not the least of which were Dean Benedetti's recordings of Charlie Parker. But the discovery of more music from the Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane is made all the more extraordinary because so few knew it existed and the only official recordings by this band were made in its first weeks of existence. Now, a forgotten November 1957 Carnegie Hall concert taped by Voice of America radio has been discovered by the Library of Congress with two appearances by the quartet.

JAZZ: With its three compositions by Thelonious Monk, one might call this LP from 1964 "3 Standards and 3 Monks". The 'High Priest' of bebop had reached a further pinnacle in his career and performed with his fantastic, skilful and well-rehearsed quartet at numerous festivals and concerts. As if in a dream, the musicians penetrate the apparently simple yet rhythmically complicated themes, interrupted again and again by Monk's solo escapades on the piano. On the stage, Monk often stood up and jigged around the piano like a lumbering dancing bear, with one of his distinctive hats on his head; he plonks down on the piano stool after the Charlie Rouse solo; his enormous feet tap back and forth to the beat; he constantly fiddles with the ring on his finger; and he creates the most wonderful improvisations ever heard with his 'false' fingering. Calling all jazz fans: Listen to Thelonious Monk, and you will have a ball - most especially if you put this super disc with the promising title "It's Monks Time" on your turntable!." Recording: January - March 1964 Production: Teo Macero." "It's Monk's Time" - Thelonious Monk (p); Charlie Rouse (ts); Butch Warren (b); Ben Riley (dr)." standard sleeve

JAZZ: The first version of the classic Monk Quartet formula of which tenorist Charlie Rouse was the essential ingredient came into being at the time of Monk's now legendary Town Hall concert in N.Y. in Feb. 1959. Sam Jones and Art Taylor were the rhythm players in the orchestral segment of the event and together with Rouse and Monk performed three Quartet numbers. The collaboration worked so well that they added Thad Jones on cornet and recorded Monk's next Riverside. The tunes played in this recital by the Quartet are familiar Monk fare and it is fascinating to compare the differences in both "Epistrophy" (one of Thelonious' earliest compositions) and "Evidence" also recorded at the Sankei Hall concert for Columbia.

JAZZ: (4-LP set) The band plays standards, many of Monk's famous tunes, a few lesser known items like "Gallop's Gallop" and "Blues Five Spot" and the recent compositions "Teo" and "Bright Mississippi." Propelled by Gales and Riley, Monk and Rouse deliver amazing ten-minute excursions on such Monk classics as "Nutty," "Rhythm-a-ning," and "Blue Monk." Monk was at a particular high point pianistically during this gig; in fact, he went into a Los Angeles studio and recorded the album Solo Monk on the afternoons preceding and following the live taping. He is in full force throughout, but his playing is particularly superb on the standards "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" and the previously unreleased "Sweet And Lovely." Mosaic has returned to the original three-track tapes and mixed them down to beautiful sounding analog stereo masters, presenting the six sets they played that night as they happened. Limited edition of 5000.

JAZZ: When Monk and Trane spent six months of 1957 working together at New York's Five Spot Cafe, it was an historic event which certainly should have been exhaustively recorded. But nonmusical conflicts made that impossible, leaving as the only permanent reminders of this momentous encounter the three remarkable quartet selections that highlight this album. With Coleman Hawkins, Ray Copeland, Gigi Gryce, Wilbur Ware, Art Blakey, Shadow Wilson.

JAZZ: Volume two of the complete recordings of Thelonius Monk opens with the first session he was able to make after a three year hiatus. Surrounded by musicians he had previously played and recorded with, the pianist felt safe and secure. The trio sessions for Prestige are not as well known as the music Monk made for Blue Note but they are musically stunning and rank among the best things Monk ever made. Considering the high level on these two sessions, it is to be regretted that Monk did not record more often in such contexts.
