JAZZ: Philly Joe Jones led a ghost band dedicated to the music of Tadd Dameron. This CD is a presentation of the Grammy-nominated album featuring Johnny Griffin. At the recording session, Griff was prominently positioned in front of the band wearing a white hospital scrub shirt. He asked the band to wave him on if they wanted him to play on more than the agreed upon two selections, and the whole band waved him on. This CD also includes three additional alternate takes, and was digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. Featuring: Don Sickler, Benny Powell, Frank Wess, Charles Davis, Cecil Payne, Larry Ridley and Walter Davis jr.

JAZZ: A reissue of Gil Scott-Heron's 1972 album taken from the original master tapes. The album is special as one side consists of songs - all but one written with Brian Jackson - and the flipside is of poetry. Both forms showcase the political and the personal, in a way where even the time-specific lyrics transcend their era. Gil and Brian are backed an all-star band consisting of Bernard Purdie, Gerry Jemmott, Hubert Laws and David Spinozza. These help bring out the pathos in the achingly sad 'Did You Hear What They Say' - one of Gil's finest pieces of writing.

SOUL: If those 70s funkateers haven't picked up a cherished original yet, the reissue of Gil Scott Heron's 'Lady Day And John Coltrane' will fill them with glee and the much rarer 'See-Saw Affair' by Cesar on the flip will raise an eyebrow or two. This 45 celebrates our acquisition of the Flying Dutchman catalogue for BGP.

SOUL: The R&B fraternity are still hungry for copies of the Newports' 'Dixie Women', issued on our first New Breed CD, and has developed into a staple of the scene's DJs. Surprisingly the wonderfully named Sinner Strong has not been represented on Ace yet so 'Don't Knock It' puts that right and we can but ponder how she earned that name.

OLDIES: From 'Captain Of Your Ship' in the '60s to 'Shoes' in the '70s, Reparata & The Delrons were a very popular girl group on both sides of the Atlantic. Here are their hits and a selection of their album sides and rarities. 'Captain Of Your Ship' was a big hit in the U.K., even though it didn't chart in the U.S. As well as the group's recordings, this CD includes Reparata's solo outings including the '70s U.K./U.S. hit 'Shoes.' Also includes the Northern Soul monster 'Panic'; a massive dancefloor favorite at Wigan Casino. This 30 track 'best of' compilation should become the definitive Reparata And The Delron's package.

JAZZ: Louis Armstrong was one of jazz's greatest names, long recognised as a great innovator as well as a populariser. His recordings with his Hot 7s and Hot 5s in the 20s and 30s are regarded as some of the most important of the 20th Century. In the following years his peerless trumpet playing and vocal talent took him to the top of the pop charts. He signed to Flying Dutchman to make the album "And His Friends". Label-owner Bob Thiele wrote his big hit of 1968, 'What A Wonderful World'. Thiele designed this album as a celebration of Armstrong's 70th birthday, (although his date of birth, given as 4 July 1900 in the liner notes to the LP, is now questioned in several sources) throwing a large party for him in the studio at the start of three sessions which began on 26 May 1970. This explains how the album's opening track, 'We Shall Overcome', features a chorus sung by, amongst many others, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman and Leon Thomas.

JAZZ: (3-CD set) The three albums that Gil Scott-Heron recorded for Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman label are among the most important in black music history. They showed a multi-talented artist coming to full fruition with his first efforts on wax. "The Revolution Begins" contains every piece of music he released for the label from 1970-1971. It includes classic performances, including both the spoken word and band versions of 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised', 'Home Is Where The Hatred Is', 'Lady Day and John Coltrane', 'Pieces Of A Man', 'Whitey On The Moon' and 'Free Will'. Taken from the original master tapes, the sound quality on this release trumps all previous reissues. The bonus material includes an alternate version of Gil's third album 'Free Will' and the previously unreissued 'Artificialness', which Gil recorded with Bernard Purdie on his "Stand By Me" album. The in-depth sleeve notes contain previously unpublished interview material from both Gil and his songwriting partner Brian Jackson. The booklet also includes previously unpublished photographs of Gil taken by Raymond Ross at the sessions for "Free Will".

OLDIES: (AVAILABLE NOW) Sharon Tandy had a recording career in her native South Africa, on her return there in 1970, as she had before leaving for Europe in late 1964, but it is with the spectacular intervening period the singer spent abroad that the long overdue compilation YOU'VE GOTTA BELIEVE IT'S SHARON TANDY is concerned. It was a whirlwind five years for the shy youngster, lived fully in the eye of the Swinging London hurricane, and overseen by the Svengali-like machinations of Sharon's mentor/manager erstwhile husband, Frank Fenter, who brought her to the UK with the unswerving belief that Sharon had what it took to become a star.

SOUL: This is an in-depth look at Cybotron's early influential work, from the period when this "techno" band featured Detroit Techno pioneer Juan Atkins. This CD features the seminal singles "Cosmic Cars" and "Clear." As well as album tracks, this compilation contains many rare 12-inch mixes that have never before been available on CD. Also includes the super-rare early Derrick May and Juan Atkins collaboration "Let's Go" as X-Ray, which has never previously been reissued. Noted dance music historian Chris Menist has compiled the album and his sleeve notes contain insights from an exclusive interview with Juan Atkins conducted for this CD.
