JAZZ: At Prestige, Gene Ammons basically did two types of sessions: a jamming situation with several other all-star horns; or a quartet format featuring a top-flight rhythm section behind him. Whatever the setting, "Jug," as he was nicknamed, displayed that dominant trait held in common with other giants in the grand history of his chosen instrument, the tenor saxophone-the ability to tell a story. Here are the blues, the ballads, Charlie Parker's "Confirmation," and Eddie Heywood's "Canadian Sunset." The latter had been a hit for its pianist-composer and was again for Ammons. An added feature here is the addition of jazz-oriented conga player, Ray Barretto, to the piano, bass, and drums of Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins, and Arthur Taylor. OJC 297 (Prestige 7180).

OLDIES: Incredibly, this is the very first album (CD or LP) by Eugene Church, the epitome of cool West Coast R&B. Featured here are his four singles for the great Class label including the Hot 100 hits: 'Pretty Girls Everywhere' (#36 in 1958) and 'Miami' (#67 in 1959). This 26 track CD also features the one single for Rendezvous and an unissued take of 'Miami,' all produced by Leon Rene. Included are Church's five King singles, which are almost unknown, even though produced by Johnny Otis. There was one R&B hit for King, 'Mind Your Own Business' (#19 in 1961). The compilation is rounded off by Church's earlier recordings for Specialty and Modern (as the Cliques duo with Jesse Belvin, including the #45 pop hit 'Girl In My Dreams' from 1956).

COUNTRY & WESTERN: (9-CD box set with hardcover book) Very few people know that Gene Autry began his career as the writer and performer of authentic white country blues. While working as a telegrapher for the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad, he travelled to New York in 1929, hoping to follow his dream of competing with the top pop singers of the day. Instead, on the advice of Frankie and Johnny Marvin, and legendary producer Arthur Satherley, Autry used his talent to emulate Jimmie Rodgers. This set contains all of the surviving recordings from 1929-33 for the first time ever. Most of these songs have never been on CD, and many have not been available in any form since their original release, including more than 20 songs that are issued here for the first time.

OLDIES: Only one Gene Simmons record was ever released on the original Sun label, but many of his other Sun titles and alternate takes have appeared in haphazard fashion over the years as part of the never-ending cycle of Sun archaeology. Finally, this CD brings together all the essentials of Gene's recording career at Sun. This contains every title he cut there, many in multiple takes, from his earliest Tupelo demos to more polished studio work. They also showcase the ead guitar work provided by Gene's brother, Carl. As a bonus, this features the first three recordings Gene made at the Hi Records in 1959, two of which appeared on the Checker label. Features a new interview material by Sun historian Hank Davis.

OLDIES: Gene Vincent will always be remembered as the "Screaming End" - the tortured rock 'n' roll singer who rocked harder than anyone in the mid-1950s. What people tend to forget is that Gene had another side, a sweet high voice that lent itself well to ballad material. He grew up with country music and classic pop, and that background comes through on these rarely-heard recordings. From his first session in 1956 until one of his last in 1971, this collection, the first in Bear Family's "The Ballads Of" series, showcases some of the best ballads Vincent ever recorded, from "Important Words" to "Over The Rainbow" and "The Night Is So Lonely" and many more.
