IN THE CITY OF LOST THINGS (Stock on hand: 22) |
CD: $16.98 (US) - ($15.28 with *discount) | HEART |
7/17/2007 | |
| JAZZ: In general his approach to piano is very modern utilizing bitonality, dissonance, and extended harmonies. LoCascio has a thorough sense of harmony as well as rhythm and it is a pleasure to hear all three musicians work with such artistry. His technical facility, harmonic sophistication and fluid melodic lines reminds us quite a lot of Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette in the sense that the arrangements are interwoven and collaborative. LoCascio unravels some rather otherworldly progressions that drape the composition with an extra layer of mystery and intrigue. | |||||

SEASONS AGO - THE MUSIC OF ALEC WILDER (Stock on hand: 29) |
CD: $16.98 (US) - ($15.28 with *discount) | HEART |
4/21/2009 | |
| JAZZ: The duo of Joe LoCascio - piano & Woody Witt - soprano saxophone have been playing together for over a decade and decided to make a CD of the music of Alec Wilder. Alec Wilder's music is a unique blend of American musical traditions - among them jazz and the American popular song - and basic "classical" European forms and techniques. As such it fiercely resists all labeling. Although it often pained Alec that his music was not more widely accepted by either jazz or classical performers, undeterred he wrote a great deal of music of remarkable originality in many forms: sonatas, suites, concertos, operas, ballets, art songs, woodwind quintets, brass quintets, jazz suites - and hundreds of popular songs. | |||||

| JAZZ: Philly Joe Jones led a ghost band dedicated to the music of Tadd Dameron. This CD is a presentation of the Grammy-nominated album featuring Johnny Griffin. He asked the band to wave him on if they wanted him to play on more than the agreed upon two selections, and the whole band waved him on. This CD also includes three additional alternate takes, and was digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. Featuring: Don Sickler, Benny Powell, Frank Wess, Charles Davis, Cecil Payne, Larry Ridley and Walter Davis jr. | |||||

| BLUES: These stellar sides were among Ivory Joe's first in a recording career that spanned nearly 30 years - from 1944 until his untimely death in 1974. On most of the featured tracks, Ivory Joe is backed by the rhythm and horn section from no less a band than that of Duke Ellington. Elsewhere on the CD his accompanists include Johnny Moore's Three Blazers (with Charles Brown) and future country music production legend Owen Bradley (who also produced Brenda Lee). Highlights include Ivory Joe's first ever commercial recording, the classic 'Blues At Sunrise' and his breakthrough hit, the now-standard 'Guess Who.' | |||||
| JOHNNIE & JOE |
I'LL BE SPINNING - THE J & S RECORDINGS (Stock on hand: 3) |
CD: $19.98 (US) - ($17.98 with *discount) | ACE - UK |
12/8/2006 | |
| OLDIES: Johnnie & Joe were an R&B duo who hit the R&B charts three times, including the massive hit 'Over The Mountain' (R&B #3, Pop #8). Johnnie was Johnnie Richardson who ran the Dice label (the Clickettes) and she was the daughter of Zell Sanders whose J & S Label released the Baby Washington and Hearts discs - so all of Ace's J & S/Dice reissues tie in together. This includes their hits for J & S and Chess plus three previously unreleased items. The musical and vocal arrangements are similar to and will appeal to collectors of doo wop from the same period. Not only is the first legitimate CD release by the duo, but even Ace has only ever released one track by them. | |||||

| SOUL: "Get Way Back" brings you - for the first time on one CD - the recordings that Joe made in the first five years of his career, for King and the American Ace label. Here are 27 cuts that embrace New York rock'n'roll, and New Orleans R&B that point the way to the great soul singer that Joe would become in the 60s. All of the tracks used here are the original singles masters, unlike previous CD reissues of some of the songs, which have been presented as alternate takes. Many of the tracks have not been reissued on CD (or any other format) before. The tracks are: Davy You Upset My Home, Come In This House, Another Man's Woman, My Biggest Mistake, Right Back To My Arms, I Had To Come Back To You, She's Mine, Get Way Back, Pneumonia, I Want To Have A Talk With You, Ain't Nobody's Business, Cut It Out, Put Your Confidence In Me, Open The Door, Just For You And Me, You Little Baby Face Thing, Mother's Advice, Charlie Brown Got Expelled, Blessed Are These Tears, Yum, Yum, Yum, Don't Hold It Against Me, Grannie Stole The Show, Boys Will Be Boys, Baby You're Right (I'll Hold What I Got), Come On In This House (with group overdubbed), Gee, I Really Want You (with group overdubbed). | |||||

ROCKIN' AT THE DRIVE-IN (Stock on hand: 2) |
CD: $19.98 (US) - ($17.98 with *discount) | ACE - UK |
2/13/2004 | |
| OLDIES: This 24 track CD is a classic of greasy L.A. rock 'n roll and a long-overdue CD-fication of one of Ace's most potent vinyl albums of the 1980s! Overhauled, amended and expanded from the original LP via the addition of several contemporaneous 45s and previously-unissued alternates, the CD features the best of sax man Joe Houston's later work for Jake Porter's Combo label. A crazy blend of adrenaline and alcohol-influenced saxblasting, this set exemplifies all the excitement of the Los Angeles rockin' R&B scene of the late 1950s. All-bar-one of these tracks are making their legal CD debut with alternate takes being used, wherever possible, for those tracks previously included on Ace's best selling compilation "Honk Honk Honk!" (ACE #781). | |||||
