East Texas country singer Benny Barnes scored a huge hit in 1956 with only his second record, Poor Man's Riches, cut for the legendary Starday label, and would quickly graduate from the beer joints of his native Beaumont (where he often shared the stage with George Jones) to the national spotlight of the Louisiana Hayride. He was boyishly handsome, had convincing stage presence, and an instantly recognizable vocal style that melded influences like George Jones and Lefty Frizzell with that of his early idol, Hank Snow. He had defied current trends and record industry wisdom by hitting with a hard country performance at a time when rock 'n' roll had threatened to consume everything in its path.

This material was originally recorded live for inclusion in the famous series of Jubilee radio shows. Collectors and those interested in such matters may care to know that tracks are taken from program 131, dubbed Apr. 30, 1945, program 126, dubbed Mar. 26, 1945, program 203 was originally broadcast on the Jan. 17, 1947, and program 129 was dubbed Apr. 16, 1945. This CD represents a good selection of varied material, and the sound quality is limited by the demands of the 'low tech' mono broadcasting of the period, however this does not prevent the enormous drive and quality of The Benny Carter Band from shining through and much work has been done with the aid of modern digital technology to greatly enhance these great performances.

This tribute album features Benny with three manifestations of his orchestra and amongst the personnel are some of the greats many of whom went onto establish their own orchestras. Seven years have passed since Benny was anointed The King Of Swing at his 1939 Carnegie Hall Concert and it is easy to see how the band has developed and become more confident. A collectors item.

"The King Of Swing" made numerous recordings for the Armed Forces Radio Service and this compact disc is the first in a new addition to the Benny Goodman discography, which will incorporate what we hope will be the his complete output from that series, all in sequence and all digitally mastered directly from the original transcription discs. Featuring guest vocalists Johnny Mercer, Martha Tilton and Eve Young.
