AT CARNEGIE HALL (Stock on hand: 8) |
CD: $56.98 (US) - ($51.28 with *discount) | PREMIUM RECORDS |
1/17/2012 | |
| VOCALS - JAZZ & POP: Probably the most famous "Live" album of all time, this disc captures the excitement of a Harry Belafonte concert at the height of his popularity. A collection of Belafonte favorites recorded from two consecutive performances at Carnegie Hall this "Live" album was an anomaly at a time when only comedy albums were recorded outside of the studio environment. Although it wasn't the first live album ever made, but it was certainly the first to be a major financial and artistic success. From the opening trumpet fanfare and brief orchestral overture to the epic 12-minute version of "Matilda" (which set a standard for audience participation), this album never lets up. It is exciting, poignant, thrilling, intimate, and at times, spontaneously hilarious. Released on the high-resolution audiophile format known as XRCD, this CD is playable on all CD players. | |||||

| BIG BAND: It would be impossible for anyone writing about the great days of British Big Bands to omit the name of the man who, by his sheer dynamic personality, took his outfit from the comparative obscurity of the small West End clubs to that of a "household name" of the era - Harry Roy. His regular Friday night broadcasts were eagerly listened to and his stage shows are still considered by many to have been the best in variety entertainment. There are twenty tracks on this album and they show the sheer excellence and versatility of the band led by the man who announced himself as "Your little hot-cha-cha" To hear just how totally distinctive Harry's voice was, just listen to Truckin' On Down. The recordings are from 1933-1935. Tracks are: Truckin' On Down (vocal Harry Roy); No Moon No Stars Just You (vocal: Ivor Moreton); London On A Rainy Night (vocal: Ivor Moreton); Troublesome trumpet (vocal: Harry Roy and The Band); Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (vocal: Ivor Moreton); The Beat O' My Heart (vocal: Bill Currie); Gertie The Girl with The Gong (vocals: Bill Currie and Ivor Moreton); The Object Of My Affection (vocal: Bill Currie); Cowboy In Manhattan; Let's Have A Jamboree (vocals: Bill Currie and Chorus); Louisiana Lullaby (vocal: Harry Roy); Were Gonna Have Smooth Sailing (vocal: Harry Roy); Love And A Dime (vocal: Harry Roy); The Words Are In My Heart; My Hats On The Side Of My Head (vocal: Harry Roy); I Was In The Mood (vocals: Harry Roy and Bill Currie); Hurricane Harry (vocal: Bill Currie); Stars Over Devon (vocal: Ivor Moreton); Swingy Little Thingy (vocal: Harry Roy). | |||||
