OLDIES: This is a long-overdue 'hits and rarities' U.K. compilation from one of the greatest R&B groups of them all. Led by lead vocalist Johnny Tanner and the guitar of Lowman Pauling, the gospel-infused harmonies of the "5" Royales were and still are integral to the metamorphosis of R&B into soul. Pauling was and remains the idol of Stax's premier guitarist Steve Cropper, who has written a brief note for this CD. Billy Vera has also written a piece for this project. This contains all of the Royales' major King R&B hits, including 'Think' (revived by James Brown in the 70s) and 'Dedicated To The One I Love'. It also contains many tracks that have never been reissued on U.K. CD, several of which have never been reissued.

OLDIES: Hank Ballard is one of the best-loved of the King/Federal artists and this is where he started out with the Royals (who soon became the Midnighters). These are the complete recordings by the Royals. The group had its first chart success with 'Get It' at #6 R&B in 1953, followed by the controversial 'Work With Me Annie,' an R&B chart topper in 1954. The earlier recordings are classy doo wop, notably the original version of the later Gladys Knight hit, 'Every Beat Of My Heart' (here without the usual overdubbed rhythm section). Also included as bonus tracks are previously unissued takes of 'The Shrine Of St. Cecilia' and 'Work With Me Annie'. Includes biographical sketch by Paul Harris based on an interview with Hank Ballard.

OLDIES: What better way to inaugurate Ace's series of CDs, taken directly from the original acetates of King and De Luxe Records, than with 24 of the classic early recordings of one of R&B's most legendary names? With the exception of 2 tracks (for which the acetates did not survive), this contains at least one version of every track from every session that Roy Brown cut during 1947. It's long been believed that most of these versions were destroyed in a warehouse fire in 1948. They are being heard publicly for the first time since they were recorded!

OLDIES: Following in the footsteps of Ace's earlier retrospective of the "5" Royales' best 1950s King recordings comes this equally essential collection that chronicles their activities in the early 1960s. Presented in best-ever sound, here are 14 of their finest sides for the Memphis-based Home Of The Blues label - including the ť400-rated, Northern Soul and 'Beach Music' favourite that is the title track. Many will want to buy this CD on the strength of this one track alone. Also included are the complete Federal recordings of their lead guitarist and chief songwriter Lowman "El" Pauling and their pianist Royal "The Royalton" Abbit - all making their CD debut - plus three solo Pauling sides that were recorded for (but not issued by) HOTB.

COUNTRY & WESTERN: (2 albums on one CD) Ace presents the first of a short series of 2-On-1's by the acknowledged "King Of Country Music", the late Roy Acuff. These will pair several of his original, and in-demand, Hickory albums from the early 1960s. This CD offers a pairing of Mr. Acuff's first two Hickory albums. The first compiled his Hickory singles from 1957-1960, and represents some of the last authentic hillbilly music to be recorded in Nashville during the 1950s. The second features stellar re-cuts of some of his biggest '30s and '40s hits that are preferred by many to those original recordings. The release of this package will mark the first time that these albums have been available "as originally issued" in nearly 40 years.

COUNTRY & WESTERN: (2 albums on one CD) Ace's second dip into the early '60s Hickory catalog of the "king of country music" combines Acuff's thematically linked 5th and 6th albums for the label. Both were originally released in 1963, and both feature Acuff in what is possibly the best voice of his long career. These albums cover traditional American folk ballads and jubilee-style white gospel, with some of the most famous songs in both genres being featured along the way. Beautifully remastered from original first-generation Hickory Records master tapes, both albums are being reissued here on CD for the first time complete. More than 75% of the tracks have been unavailable for over 30 years.

SOUL: Roy Lee Johnson is best known for writing "Mr Moonlight" for Doctor Feelgood and the Interns, which was covered by the Beatles. He made some stunning records for a variety of labels down through the 60s and 70s. His dynamite live performance convinced Jimmy Johnson to record him at Muscle Shoals Sound and sign the record to Stax. It is this rare 1973 masterpiece that we are reissuing here. The album is a brilliant collection of funk, punctuated with a couple of shots of fine southern soul. "The Dryer" and "Patch It Up" are funk club classics and make this album sought-after by collectors. "I Can't Stand This Loneliness" and "Something Special" are fine soul moments that showcase his fine voice.

BLUES: Cowboy Roy Brown was born in Arkansas on April 20, 1875, the son of a preacher. He and his sister learned to play guitar from their father who they accompanied when he played violin in church. In his twenties, Roy visited St Louis during the 1904 World's Fair and later moved to Kansas City, then Marion, Illinois and then drifted to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Deadwood, South Dakota. Roy eventually returned to St Louis where he was a street singer performing with his guitar and catalog of blues, folk and cowboy tunes. Roy and his band - a guitar named "Baby" and a kazoo named "Leon" - performed cowboy standards and popular tunes. All of which can be heard here on this collection of previously unissued mid-'50s recordings.
