OLDIES:
Ultra-desirable, early 60s St. Louis R & B. The late vocalist Leo Gooden was an important local mover-and-shaker whose ear for talent helped him assemble one of the best bands of its time. Assembled initially to be the house band at Gooden's Blue Note Club, "Leo's Five" soon took on an identity of their own. The driving rhythm section of drummer Kenny Rice and organist Don James was something of a prototype for the small Jazz-R&B combos that abounded on the early-mid 60s, such as those of Jimmy McGriff and Jimmy Smith, while the hard saxophone of tenor player Charles 'Little Man' Wright led a horn section to die for. The voice of the late, great Ted Taylor is one of the most unique and admired in 60s and 70s blues and soul music. A prolific recording artist for almost 30 years, the quantity of titles in his catalogue is matched track for track by their high quality. This is a 24 track definitive compilation of the ultimate one-shot garage band - San Jose, California's Count Five. It's a fresh look at the teenage combo that sent the timeless teen angst anthem "Psychotic Reaction" into the U.S. Top 10 in the summer of 1966. For the first time on a C5 reissue, the original master tapes have been used (previously it was a mixture of appalling fake stereo and mediocre disc dubs), and the Big Beat sleuths even located the original session tape of "Psychotic," which has a completely different ending. Tape research threw up further alternate takes, unedited versions and fabulous unreleased material from the vaults of Double Shot Records, for whom the C5 recorded a classic LP and several great singles, all of which are here.

Drummer Ted Sirota relocated to Chicago in 1992 after graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston. Sirota quickly became very active on the Chicago jazz scene performing with Von Freeman, Jodie Christian, Fred Hopkins, Lin Halliday, Rob Mazurek and many others. As a member of the Sabertooth Jazz Quartet, Sirota has been performing weekly at the Green Mill for seven years now and counting. Ted Sirota's Rebel Souls was formed in 1996 and have since released three albums. "Breeding Resistance" is the Delmark debut for the Rebel Souls which features Jeb Bishop, trombone; Geoff Bradfield, tenor sax; Jeff Parker, guitar; Clark Sommers, bass; Ted Sirota, drums.

The Jelly Roll Jazz Band was recorded live at Clay's Barbecue Restaurant in Benicia, California on September 30, 1999, by Alice Scheelar. This kind of jazz, the original jazz, was created in New Orleans over one hundred years ago. During the 1920s it spread north to Chicago, and from there across the whole world. Also known as Dixieland jazz, it is a unique part of our American musical heritage.
