BLUES:
For the first time in her career, blues diva Dana Gillespie releases a live album. After four studio sets for Ace, dating back to 1982's "Blue Job", this mid-price CD is released in response to the demand by her audiences around the world. Recorded with the London Blues Band in Poole in 2006, the set features the dynamic guitar skills of Dino Baptiste. Of the 12 numbers, eight are written by Dana, testimony to the tribute paid to her by old friend Bob Dylan, who told her "I love your songwriting". No fancy studio tweaks are used here. Dana and the Band cut the mustard, with the very highest level of musicianship spiced up with a lot of fun to create this straight-ahead record.

All 13 tracks are written by Dana, either on her own or with members of her topnotch band. In 1937, Dizzy Gillespie visited Paris as a member of Teddy Hill's band. He returned to France 11 years later, leading his own spectacular big band which created a huge sensation in Europe. Four years later, in early 1952, Gillespie was again in the French capital - this time as a soloist. Since he had no longer a regular band of his own, Blue Star and Vogue recorded the visiting star with a bewildering variety of local artists and expatriate Americans including Don Byas, Art Simmons and Arnold Ross. Gillespie always liked his bebop tailored to a large aggregation and burst onto the scene with his startling Bib Band in 1945 - the first of many Diz would put together over the years. This 1956 recording live from Birdland in New York City, features one of the finest units that Gillespie ever led. Blessed with a good team of arrangers, himself included, he set collective standards that not all such bands could match. The disc abounds with great charts and superb section and solo work with impressive readings of Gillespie classics such as Groovin' High, Tin Tin Deo, Night in Tunisia, Cool Breeze and the rest.
