SOCIAL CALL (Stock on hand: 1) |
CD: $16.98 (US) - ($15.28 with *discount) | UPTOWN JAZZ |
8/26/2003 | |
| JAZZ: Tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse is best known for his long association with Thelonious Monk (1959-70) where he earned an international reputation. After leaving Monk, he dropped out of music altogether until 1974 when he started recording again. In 1979, he co-founded Sphere, one of the best straight-ahead groups around. This CD pairs Rouse with his long-time friend Red Rodney (trumpet/flugelhorn), whose bop background, combined with his extraordinary lyricism, make "Social Call" a treat for fans of Rouse and Rodney. This re-issue of the original 1984 album features 3 bonus tracks. | |||||

| LEO'S FIVE |
DIRECT FROM THE BLUE NOTE CLUB (Stock on hand: 3) |
CD: $19.98 (US) - ($17.98 with *discount) | ACE - UK |
12/5/2008 | |
| OLDIES: Ultra-desirable, early 60s St. Louis R & B. The late vocalist Leo Gooden was an important local mover-and-shaker whose ear for talent helped him assemble one of the best bands of its time. Assembled initially to be the house band at Gooden's Blue Note Club, "Leo's Five" soon took on an identity of their own. The driving rhythm section of drummer Kenny Rice and organist Don James was something of a prototype for the small Jazz-R&B combos that abounded on the early-mid 60s, such as those of Jimmy McGriff and Jimmy Smith, while the hard saxophone of tenor player Charles 'Little Man' Wright led a horn section to die for.Tracks are: Hold It, C.O.D. - Albert King, Worsome Baby - Albert King, Lonesome - Albert King, You Threw Your Love On Me Too Strong - Albert King, Let's Do The Cat - Jamie Ross with Leo's Five, So Glad - Charles Drain, Stop And Think About It - Charles Drain, High Heel Sneakers, Something You Got, Sunrise Serenade, Cookin' With Chezie Mae, Frederick's Dream, Ol' Man River Part 1, Ol' Man River Part 2, Winkee-Do - Leo Gooden, Ugly-Ugly - Leo Gooden, Tippin', Johnny Comes Marching Home, Mop Water, Minor Over Matter. | |||||

BLUESOLOGY (Stock on hand: 2) |
CD: $19.98 (US) - ($17.98 with *discount) | ACE - UK |
11/4/2005 | |
| BLUES: Freddy Robinson had only recently been signed to Enterprise, the Stax subsidiary, when the company began wrapping up its operations in the mid-'70s. Many of his fine sessions were consequently consigned to the vaults. Those that had been released were never given the attention they deserved - a story common to some of the most exhilarating Ace reissues. Ace sets the record straight with this carefully compiled CD which mixes 11 tracks from both his Enterprise LPs ("At The Drive In" and "Off The Cuff") with 9 previously unissued titles. | |||||

| BLUES: Volume 2 presents more Federal and King sessions from the early-to-mid 1960s, featuring the best of the remaining singles, augmented by the better LP tracks. As before, there are lashings of guitar-led instrumentals along with blues-drenched vocal numbers. Star-studded accompanists include Lonnie Mack and Fred Jordan (guitars), Clifford Scott and Gene Redd (saxophones), Sonny Thompson (piano) and Philip Paul (drums). During this period, Freddy King's hot guitar licks were influencing British disciples Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Peter Green and Jimmy Page - plus countless California surf combos. | |||||

| HUGHES, FREDDIE |
SEND MY BABY BACK...PLUS (Stock on hand: 4) |
CD: $19.98 (US) - ($17.98 with *discount) | KENT - UK |
6/4/2010 | |
| SOUL: Freddie Hughes had one of the great falsetto soul voices of the era - pleading, celebratory, and always dripping with soul. The Oakland-based artist was popular in his home region of the Bay Area but did not achieve national recognition until the sweet soul ballad 'Send My Baby Back' was an R&B smash in 1968. On the hindlegs of the hit, Wand Records commissioned an album, which has subsequently become one of the most sought-after soul long players of the era. Stuffed with classy performances such as the uptown ballad "He's No Good" and northern fave "We Gotta Keep On", the album demonstrates the versatility of Hughes remarkable talent. 24 track colleciton features 12 bonus tracks to go with the original 12. | |||||
