OLDIES:
Ultra-desirable, early 60s St. Louis R & B. The late vocalist Leo Gooden was an important local mover-and-shaker whose ear for talent helped him assemble one of the best bands of its time. Assembled initially to be the house band at Gooden's Blue Note Club, "Leo's Five" soon took on an identity of their own. The driving rhythm section of drummer Kenny Rice and organist Don James was something of a prototype for the small Jazz-R&B combos that abounded on the early-mid 60s, such as those of Jimmy McGriff and Jimmy Smith, while the hard saxophone of tenor player Charles 'Little Man' Wright led a horn section to die for. This is a 24 track definitive compilation of the ultimate one-shot garage band - San Jose, California's Count Five. It's a fresh look at the teenage combo that sent the timeless teen angst anthem "Psychotic Reaction" into the U.S. Top 10 in the summer of 1966. For the first time on a C5 reissue, the original master tapes have been used (previously it was a mixture of appalling fake stereo and mediocre disc dubs), and the Big Beat sleuths even located the original session tape of "Psychotic," which has a completely different ending. Tape research threw up further alternate takes, unedited versions and fabulous unreleased material from the vaults of Double Shot Records, for whom the C5 recorded a classic LP and several great singles, all of which are here.

The Five C's, of Gary, IN, had two 78s issued in 1954: "Tell Me"/"Whoo Wee Baby"(United 172) and "Goody Goody"/"My Heart's Got The Blues" (United 180). The Navy Swings was the name of a series of radio programs broadcast in the 1950s with the object of recruiting young men into the U.S, Navy. It featured the top names in Jazz and the top vocalists of the day. Of course this band had no geographical connection with the state of Alabama and the name was doubtless contrived to compete with groups such as the popular Original Memphis Five, who, as with the California Ramblers, were primarily based in New York City. The Babies' first recording session was to produce a cover of "Arkansas" (featured on this CD), a then-current best seller for Red McKenzie's Mound City Blues Blowers, plus two popular songs from 1924, "Hard Hearted Hannah" and "Tessie! Stop Teasing Me," also featured here. The music on this 26 track CD was recorded in New York from July 24th, 1924 to June 24th, 1927.
