SOUL: After the great reception of our vinyl album of "I'm A Loser" we are pleased to make Doris' follow up available again in the format, and for the first time since it was originally released here in 1971. "Legend" was recorded in the epicenter of southern soul that is the Muscle Shoals area, at the revered Quinvy Studios in Sheffield, Alabama. As you might expect the musicianship is wonderful, and the choice of repertoire and Doris' voice equally so. Our limited edition "heavy vinyl" release replicates the original US mankind release externally, but also comes complete with inner bag containing a lengthy "inner sleeve note" and as many illustrations as we could fit onto 12 inches of paper!

JAZZ: Duke Ellington was perhaps jazz music's greatest composer of the 20th century. His importance led to him being asked to provide the musical focal point for the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation of Abraham Lincoln on 1 January 1963, freeing all slaves who were living in the ten states rebelling in the Civil War. Ellington wrote an extended piece which combined newly composed music with well-chosen works from earlier in his career and captured a wide panorama of the black American experience: from gospel to the blues. Singer Joy Sherrill was often the focal point, ably assisted by the Ellington Orchestra. Stridently titled "My People" and featuring an early musical tribute to Martin Luther King, it was released on Bob Thiele's mid-60s Contact label but failed to sell in large numbers. Thiele reissued it on Flying Dutchman in the early 70s, but this is the first time that it has been reunited with its original artwork. It is another fine addition to our Boplicity range of jazz classics.

BLUES: In the tradition of Wynonie Harris and Big Joe Turner comes blues shouter Duke Henderson. From concert promoter to minister, gospel dj to recording executive, Big Duke/Brother Henderson was a familiar and rather curious figure on the post-war LA entertainment scene. He recorded for many indie labels from 1945-53 including the classic "Hey Dr. Kinsey" for Flair in '53. "This set consists of a slab some of the finest blues shouting ever put on disc. This was the dawn of R&B, when the style was emerging from larger bands down to more manageable combos." -Blues & Rhythm. With Lucky Thompson, Charles Mingus, Lee Young, Shifty Henry, Teddy Buckner, Jack McVea.

BIG BAND: When Billy Strayhorn died of cancer in 1967, Duke Ellington was devastated. His closest friend and arranger had left his life full of music and memories. As a tribute, Ellington and his orchestra almost immediately began recording a tribute to Strayhorn, using the late arranger's own compositions. The album features well-known and previously unrecorded Strayhorn tunes that showcase his range, versatility, and, above all, the quality that Ellington admired him most for: his sensitivity to all of the timbral, tonal, and color possibilities an orchestra could bring to a piece of music. Full of informality and soulful verve, these recordings feel like they are an afterthought, an unwillingness to completely let go, a eulogy whose final words are questions, elegantly stated and met with only the echo of their last vibrations ringing in an empty room, full of wondering, longing, and helplessness, but above all the point of the questions themselves: "Is this enough?" or "Can there ever be enough to pay an adequate tribute to this man?" They are interesting questions, because only five years later we would all be saying the same thing about Ellington. For a man who issued well over 300 albums, this set is among his most profoundly felt and very finest recorded moments.." Recording: August and September 1967 in RCA Victor's Studio A, New York City, by Ed Begley Production: Brad McCuen." "... And His Mother Called Him Bill" - Duke Ellington (p); Cat Anderson, Mercer Ellington (tr); Clark Terry (flh); Lawrence Brown, Chuck Connors (tb); Johnny Hodges (as); Russell Procope (as, cl); Jimmy Hamilton (ts, cl); Paul Gonsalves (ts); Aaron Bell (b); Steve Little (dr); a.o.." standard sleeve

BIG BAND: The appearance of Duke Ellington and His Orchestra at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival was such a tremendous success that it was quite natural that organizer George Wein invited the band to take part again in 1958. All the soloists were still around, and in addition Gerry Mulligan was invited to perform a duet with Harry Carney ("Prima Bara Dubla"). What an event to look forward to! But this time the old diehards were disappointed: the Duke had had some new tunes written for him, which of course didn't trigger any memories: "El Gato", with Cat Anderson playing with the rest of the trumpet section, a new composition ("Happy Reunion") for Paul Gonsalves on the tenor saxophone, and then some compositions which were reminiscent of Debussy, and arrangements by Billy Strayhorn. Also there was a fantastic flugelhorn solo by Clark Terry in "Juniflip". The highlight of the concert, though, was when the kings of the baritone sax?, Gerry Mulligan and Harry Carney, stood in the limelight, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra could celebrate a similar triumph to that of 1956. More than 50 years later, these recordings made at the Newport Jazz Festival will have you sitting on the edge of your seat!." Recording: July 1958 live at the Newport Jazz Festival Production: Irving Townsend." "At Newport 1958" - Duke Ellington (arr, cond, p); Johnny Hodges, Russell Procope (sax); Gerry Mulligan (bs); Ray Nance (tp); Britt Woodman (tb); Jimmy Wood (b); Sam Woodyard (dr), a.o.." standard sleeve

JAZZ: The rainbow colors with which Duke chose to tint this album are taken less from the paintpots of fusion jazz and rock, and rather more from the black, natural colors of rhythm and blues. Next to a relaxed love groove ("Say That You Will") we find a polyphonic vocal number with solos ("Sunrise"), which conjures up the nostalgic atmosphere of Motown, now on the decline. Then there is snappy funk in all manner of variations, such as "Party Down", which swings trendily along but then comes over unfiltered and dry as a bone. In "Follow The Rainbow", genial musicianship, expert arrangements and a special feeling for resonance amalgamate to create a tightly-knit sound which is ever fresh and easy-going.

BIG BAND: In the era of the 78 rpm gramophone record, Ellington and his various orchestras and small units recorded almost one thousand titles (1925-1954). The one hour which constitutes this present collection is around one fiftieth of this huge legacy. It covers the period 1927-1935, and surprisingly perhaps, over half the titles included are not Ellington compositions. The listener thus has the opportunity to study the orchestra in several untypical performances.

BIG BAND: Any performance by the incomparable Duke Ellington Orchestra usually defies adequate description. With this album you can aurally travel back in time to the 1950s when the orchestra was in its heyday, at that time Duke Ellington had already scored most of his major compositions creating a considerable legacy for all lovers of jazz and the big band sound. On this album the sound quality is very good for a 50s live recording and the mix has all soloists sounding well to the fore. The album features some of Duke Ellington's finest instrumentalists, among them Johnny Hodges, William 'Cat' Anderson, Harold 'Shorty' Baker, Clark Terry and Sam Woodyard and the selection of tracks should offer something to all connoisseurs of this wonderful form of music.
