JAZZ: The Duke Pearson Big Band of the late 1960s featured great soloists Donald Byrd, Burt Collins, Lew Tabackin, Frank Foster and Pepper Adams. Drummer Mickey Roker propelled the 16 piece band with fire. All this is on display at the April 1969 Baltimore concert issued for the first time on this CD. Where the studio recordings featured relatively short pieces, this concert presents the band stretching out in full force. Even 44 years later, this is big band jazz at its finest and a clear demonstration of Duke Pearson's great talents as a leader, pianist, composer and arranger.

SOUL: After the great reception of our vinyl album of "I'm A Loser" we are pleased to make Doris' follow up available again in the format, and for the first time since it was originally released here in 1971. "Legend" was recorded in the epicenter of southern soul that is the Muscle Shoals area, at the revered Quinvy Studios in Sheffield, Alabama. As you might expect the musicianship is wonderful, and the choice of repertoire and Doris' voice equally so. Our limited edition "heavy vinyl" release replicates the original US mankind release externally, but also comes complete with inner bag containing a lengthy "inner sleeve note" and as many illustrations as we could fit onto 12 inches of paper!

JAZZ: Duke Ellington was perhaps jazz music's greatest composer of the 20th century. His importance led to him being asked to provide the musical focal point for the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation of Abraham Lincoln on 1 January 1963, freeing all slaves who were living in the ten states rebelling in the Civil War. Ellington wrote an extended piece which combined newly composed music with well-chosen works from earlier in his career and captured a wide panorama of the black American experience: from gospel to the blues. Singer Joy Sherrill was often the focal point, ably assisted by the Ellington Orchestra. Stridently titled "My People" and featuring an early musical tribute to Martin Luther King, it was released on Bob Thiele's mid-60s Contact label but failed to sell in large numbers. Thiele reissued it on Flying Dutchman in the early 70s, but this is the first time that it has been reunited with its original artwork. It is another fine addition to our Boplicity range of jazz classics.

SOUL: This ablum is considered by many - including the late Dave Godin - to be the greatest deep soul album of all time. To satisfy the demand from those who missed its previous (and very brief) Japanese CD reissue in the early 1990s, Kent is honored to restore "I'm A Loser" to catalog, as part of this retrospective of Doris' two year collaboration with another R&B legend, Jerry Williams Jr. a.k.a. Swamp Dogg. As well as Doris' two Swamp-produced albums, the CD also features the first reissue - in 36 years! - of both sides of Doris' rare US Jay Boy single (originally released as Doris Willingham). The sleeve notes include Swamp Dogg's own reminiscences of the sessions that produced this monumentally soulful music.

BLUES: In the tradition of Wynonie Harris and Big Joe Turner comes blues shouter Duke Henderson. From concert promoter to minister, gospel dj to recording executive, Big Duke/Brother Henderson was a familiar and rather curious figure on the post-war LA entertainment scene. He recorded for many indie labels from 1945-53 including the classic "Hey Dr. Kinsey" for Flair in '53. "This set consists of a slab some of the finest blues shouting ever put on disc. This was the dawn of R&B, when the style was emerging from larger bands down to more manageable combos." -Blues & Rhythm. With Lucky Thompson, Charles Mingus, Lee Young, Shifty Henry, Teddy Buckner, Jack McVea.

BIG BAND: When Billy Strayhorn died of cancer in 1967, Duke Ellington was devastated. His closest friend and arranger had left his life full of music and memories. As a tribute, Ellington and his orchestra almost immediately began recording a tribute to Strayhorn, using the late arranger's own compositions. The album features well-known and previously unrecorded Strayhorn tunes that showcase his range, versatility, and, above all, the quality that Ellington admired him most for: his sensitivity to all of the timbral, tonal, and color possibilities an orchestra could bring to a piece of music. Full of informality and soulful verve, these recordings feel like they are an afterthought, an unwillingness to completely let go, a eulogy whose final words are questions, elegantly stated and met with only the echo of their last vibrations ringing in an empty room, full of wondering, longing, and helplessness, but above all the point of the questions themselves: "Is this enough?" or "Can there ever be enough to pay an adequate tribute to this man?" They are interesting questions, because only five years later we would all be saying the same thing about Ellington. For a man who issued well over 300 albums, this set is among his most profoundly felt and very finest recorded moments.." Recording: August and September 1967 in RCA Victor's Studio A, New York City, by Ed Begley Production: Brad McCuen." "... And His Mother Called Him Bill" - Duke Ellington (p); Cat Anderson, Mercer Ellington (tr); Clark Terry (flh); Lawrence Brown, Chuck Connors (tb); Johnny Hodges (as); Russell Procope (as, cl); Jimmy Hamilton (ts, cl); Paul Gonsalves (ts); Aaron Bell (b); Steve Little (dr); a.o.." standard sleeve

SOUL: Martha Reeves started off her career in a similar way to that of Diana Ross and her Supremes. Both took up a job as secretary to Motown bosses and waited for an opportunity to appear with their band in front of the microphone. When Martha and the Vandellas at last began to climb up the career ladder, the glamourous image which Motown stipulated, which was so successful with the Supremes, didn't quite fit Martha and her Vandellas. Reeves's prominent voice was not suitable for singing gentle ballads, but it was all the better for belting out catchy dance tunes. Her music was all the rage in ghetto discos, and her records sold like hot cakes. The album "Dance Party", with its frenetic rhythms and characteristic rough sound was just what soul fans had been waiting for and almost everybody wanted it in their collection, especially since many of the numbers had already been successfully released as singles. The LP is rounded off with popular Motown numbers such as "Mickey's Monkey" and "Hitch Hike" with the result that Martha and the Vandellas not only produced their most successful LP, but almost certainly their best dance album.." Production: Mickey Stevenson and Jo Hunter." "Dance Party" - Martha Reeves, Betty Kelly, Rosalind Ashford (voc); a.o.." standard sleeve

JAZZ: The most awesome, the most swinging rhythm group of all times! Fantastic winds! There's only one guy who can make an alto saxophone sound like this - somewhere between melancholy and aggressiveness! Superlative after superlative come to mind when you listen to these nine numbers, which were recorded at the end of the Fifties. The idea of scaling down Ellington's band for jam-session-like numbers is absolutely genial because it offers soloists great opportunities to display their artistry. And these wind musicians are the best of the best, masters of their instruments. We have Roy Eldridge, who influenced the transition from swing to be-bop and a modern style of trumpet playing; Harry Edison, whose light and airy Basie-swing style cannot be denied; and Ben Webster, who amalgamates both the Count's and the Duke's style of swing. And then there is Johnny 'The Rabbit' Hodges, whose natural feeling for rhythm and gentle tone is brought to optimal expression within this concept. "Squeeze Me" and "Stompy Jones" both stem from the Forties and are often performed, but in this session they have been rejuvenated in a masterly fashion. The standard "Let's Fall In Love" demonstrates Lawrence Brown's highly personal sound on the trombone and then goes on to spotlight Roy Eldridge and Johnny Hodges, both of whom prove that they are at the very zenith of their artistic prowess. "Ruint" and "Going Up" provide a showcase for Johnny Hodges, while "Just A Memory" focuses on the gentle, sometimes rather sentimental sound of Ben Webster. Just as exceptional is the recording quality of this LP. Timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the two sessions, the reissue offers a excellent opportunity to pay homage to the Verve recording engineers.." Recording: August 1958 and February 1959 in New York City Production: Norman Granz." "Side By Side" - Johnny Hodges (as); Ben Webster (ts); Harry Edison, Roy Eldridge (tp); Lawrence Brown (tb); Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn (p); Al Hall, Wendell Marshall (b); Leslie Spann (g, fl); Jo Jones (dr) ." standard sleeve

BIG BAND: Any performance by the incomparable Duke Ellington Orchestra usually defies adequate description. With this album you can aurally travel back in time to the 1950s when the orchestra was in its heyday, at that time Duke Ellington had already scored most of his major compositions creating a considerable legacy for all lovers of jazz and the big band sound. On this album the sound quality is very good for a 50s live recording and the mix has all soloists sounding well to the fore. The album features some of Duke Ellington's finest instrumentalists, among them Johnny Hodges, William 'Cat' Anderson, Harold 'Shorty' Baker, Clark Terry and Sam Woodyard and the selection of tracks should offer something to all connoisseurs of this wonderful form of music.
